OneProcessorLaunch Tool.....
Hi All,
here's a new tool for you that might help when running old, problematic games on a dual (or more) processor machine... examples of such games are : Thief, Thief2, Thief3 (i think), System Shock 2, Dungeon Keeper 2 and so on... http://pid.gamecopyworld.com/oneproc...h_v0.0.0.1.rar documentation is included... as well as a 64bit and 32bit executable (for those purists out there)... its relatively straightforward, and i just developed it for myself (and my brother) who like old games, but unfortunately the old games don't like multiprocessor pc's :) feedback, ideas, bug reports and so on are welcome... oh and for those paranoid people - the executables were scanned using virus total and it found nothing... i also assure you the program is not trojaned, virused, or malwared... its a simple launcher... feel free to scan for yourselves obviously... and i also only warrant the 'no virus/trojans/malware' for this program ONLY if its downloaded from the above url.. if you download from any other place hosting it.. its your problem... |
Nice one ;)
|
As TippeX is a moderator as well, that should be enough to satisy anyone that all his files are CLEAN and not Trojans/Virii! We don't just let any numpty loose on the forums ya know ;)
|
Yes very nice Tipp. ;)
|
Feature request:
GUI Context menu (run with OneProecessorLaunch). |
gui i dont think is needed, perhaps a wizard tool to make the shortcuts etc would do the job?... context menu is a nice idea though, problem with that is setting the working directory for the program...
|
Such a wizard should be also enough.
|
Thx alot TippeX! Now I can probably run Blade Runner again without hitches. :)
|
Or maybe:
Right click on game exe -> send to -> OneProcessorLaunch |
Hmmm, can't get it to work on windows xp 32bit, I have tried everything I could think of.
Ps. I'm not a newbie with .bat files and command prompt. |
A game shortcut properties should be good enough to use.
Just tell it to load up OPT with flags to load the game also. *shrugs* I havent tried it yet myself, but hopefully that idea will work with most people :P |
Hmm, Well I agree that it does seem simple, but I simply can't get it to work, I have tried several times now, and all I get is an error message.
|
and the error message is?
there's only 1 messagebox block of code in there, stating if you have one processor using the tool is useless... if you got that message, then its pretty rudimentary.... you only have one processor, so using a tool designed for multi (2 or more) processor systems is pointless... |
I got that multiprocessor bug on the old unreal engine games, like Postal 2.
Going to try your tool, thanks :) |
oh yep, postal 2 is definately one that has the problem, forgot about that, i used it on the apocalypse weekend, worked fine, hope it does the trick for you...
|
quick update, i'm working on adding in the wizard stuff now (it'll make shortcuts or cmd/bat files) eta: v 0.0.0.2 release probably soon, maybe end of july along with something else too maybe :)...
i also intend to put in a cpu report diagnostic portion (via commandline which will report the cpuid information from the processor), but that will be in v 0.0.0.3 as/when my new pc arrives |
say tippex.. how is this tool different than setting processor affinity in windows? or is this just a frontend to launch the program with cpu affinity?
cheers, neliz |
well, as documented in the txt file with the program, setting the affinity in taskmanager is only possible after the process has been launched (which may be too late)... as for 'frontend'.. depends.. the tool does use the setprocessaffinity api's if that's what you mean... but does so by launching the process suspended, setting the affinity, then resuming the process... which is a little bit different than the windows launch -> user alt+tab -> taskmanager -> set affinity approach...

(i'm a pc user for crying out loud.. who ever reads a readme?) |
Could you please make the working directory parameter an optional paramenter.
It would be nice if "oneprocessorlaunchtool.exe SplinterCell2.exe" would work. So that the tool is taking the exe path as default work dir. |
just put the path in yourself, its hardly super hard..
im working on the new version atm that'll make shortcuts.. no idea on time though, bit busy atm... and in your example you don't state the path anyway... |
Its because I have the processor tool in the same directory as the game exe.
|
just use the normal method currently (-w workingdirectory -l executable) the -l part doesn't need the path, ideally though the tool shouldn't be in the same dir as the game exe (causes clutter etc)... i'll try and get the new version done soon (it'll make shortcuts for you.. much easier).. does spliter cell 2 really have a problem with multiple processors, or are you just testing it?
|
Very userful, thanks.
|
tnx for a great tool :D
|
Thanks everyone for your support, you're the best!!
|
Thank you, TippeX, I registered on the forum just to thank you. My first time here and I stumble on your very useful tool! :D
It augures well for my membership. ;) |
What about this? For some it is even more useful.
|
does pretty much the same thing, just some more customisation that i never got around to finishing.. might dust off this project and tweak it a little....
but as a rule of thumb, puting files in the system folders etc is sort of not advised anymore |
