anyone know what protection it has? i won't be getting it for a few weeks

Probably STEAM + Activation?

Well the Retail version will probably feature Securom v7.xx and I know it has an activation. It contacts 2kgames server and autopatches/decrypts (probably) before you can play the game. So anyone who managed to get the PC-version form a store pre-release-date (ohio anyone...) can't activate it anyway.

Steam version will of course feature Steam "protection" and possibly 2k activation server..

Looks as if the Direct2Drive version will use ActiveMark with online activation.

Besides activation: Demo exe indicates SecuROM 7.34.0007

Everything, including Steam and Direct2Drive builds, are new Securom versions.
The only one I am not sure about is Direct2Drive. But I'd bet a 20 that its using Securom, since other games on it have had Securom in the past.

Could be demo.exe padded and had its PE header changed.

or retail exe, either way pid shows prot as securom.... and im not going to try it, entrypoint code is not 'usual'.. not even for securom exe

activation done sites and servers are back, i got as far as scanning the exe in that rar and briefly running it, jus went to the enter your code which obv circumvented contacting the servers, but still i am too cautious over my key, even tho i can't necessarily see how that could be a bad thing, if my 2nd pc was working i would try it in an isolated enviroment, anyhow now to see whether i can play the game.. gl all :P

i think that exe was taken from the torrent preview version...it cant be demo exe with padded + changed stuff...since u check OEP/import calls/push's etc. differ!...it is secu, yea....since bioshock got secu online activation, also u cant run .exe actually since there are some files missin...just .exe wont help much :)

jus as a minor follow up, as far as i can see from when i registered, the key check happens with the servers so i'm not entirely sure the crack would work anyhow, i jus nabbed a few choice files from the demo to fill in some blanks from jus adding the exe, obv as well the only way i see of maintaining a folder of bioshock by either leaving the install open, or copy the folder elsewhere and add crack and any missing files from the demo, but obv merging like this generally comes across problems, i remember with system shock 2, that i used the demo exe which had a peculiarity but worked after a fashion, i could continue a game from a point after the demo ended, but if i started a new game it'd end at the end of the demo, anyway, roundabout point of that stream of conciousness is wait for a scene cracked one, as a general rule of thumb, that or a mini image ;)

i can't get the install to fully go through because of secrom. Anyone have any word?

im not sure that you'd have much luck, like i said tho if you ran the installer then once it got to the activation / securom thing, go into explorer and copy and paste the install folder elsewhere, then you'd have the majority of the files, not sure if it's just the exe you get when you d/l off of the server, i shall investigate.

should've really waited to add this but nvm, it seems to be 4 files including the exe, a png, a mcl and a shortcut, i would assume the mcl is the validated code file or what have you, but i still think it registers the key server side so even with the modified exe mentioned previously without first activating it i don't think you'd be in luck, the activation servers are back up tho so you should be able to activate, i read there are some issues with router / firewall combo's blocking the activation in hardware so you may want to look at it, otherwise contact 2k for activation issues

I got my game too and i had to go thru this activation BS like everybody else. A lot of people are actually upset about this and while the game might be a turning point in gaming a lot of people consider this the worst launch for a game ever.

Now for a no cd crack.

I like everybody else want one because i want to protect my cd.

The game is securom protected because i had checked the cd before installing and it has srdownload folder..i checked inside and i saw a securom downloader so securom is involved.

The only way to get a no cd would be in 2 ways in my opinion.

1st you would need to get the game to not talk at all to the activation server at all and then build a no cd patch from that assumption..but this is a lot of tweaking and may come from the "scene" world.

2nd would need to build a patch after the install like many games.....it is gonna be done for sure but how long it is gonna take i have no clue.

I have no knowledge on how to build no cd patches....but i hope soembody does so we can protect our cd from accidental scratches as i can see this game played for a long time,

ok i tested a little bit. I installed bioshock with newes daemon tools and newest yasu. At the end of the setup the patcher is started. When you click anything now to download the patch the install will be removed again. so i tried again an before i clicked to start the patcher i renamed my bioshock folder this time. The patcher gave me this error message again but setup couldn't delete the install because the directory was renamed:P

But my Installation had no executable. I looked for the patcher executable on the dvd image to try to get it to work manually but it didn't work. But i noticed that the description of the patcher executable said 'SecuROM EXE Downloader'. The patcher is not a real patcher it only downloads the original game executable.

I looked for the bioshock.exe on the internet and tried one that came with some fake crack. I was lucky because it seems to be the original bioshock.exe. I started it and the game said that it needs to be activated online and asked for a key. I just entered a few numbers and wanted to see what happens. I got an error message because the key was wrong but a new window came up with an offline Activation option=) I clicked it and it gave me a code for activation via telephone:P

That means that we only need a keygen that generates a key from the activation code and the game scould run fine without any dvd or image.

This is great. What site did you get the original exe? I thought most of those fake cracks had trojans in them?

i just searched torrentspy for bioshock and took a torrent that said bioshock crack with a size of about 9MB. It's a rar archive with 16mb bioshock.exe in it.

Okay, I got it installed and everything. I'm at the same point you are. We just need a keygen or something now, or maybe a paul.dll that will let us play without activation.

why can´t u just activate the game instead of requesting a cracked activation?

Then you can make an informed decision.

Also, the Steam version has both Steam and Securerom protection. I believe you might now have 5 activations from Securerom, although it was only two before (but don't quote me on that).

well, try the steam guys first i guess, or send a nice email to the securom people

Yep, tried again this morning and works flawlessly on my computer, and my bro got his version too, and its working nicely. I guess it was a temporary issue :)

They cracked the activation process on Steam

Now we need only someone who's able to crack the SecuROM 7 protection.
