bad laser?
 

ok guys.. i got a ps2 i was modding as a favor for a buddy.. i boot it and make sure it works ok and it goes to browser and boots games dvd games and boots cd games b4 getting to teh browser..
i dont think much about this and then i go in and mod it.. reads cd-rs fine but no dvd-rs.. remove the chip and now it wont read dvd format games.. it still reads cd games tho.. i go in and turn the dvd laser pot from 1300-1060 (or around there).. Retry and same thing happens.. no dvd games but all cd games!!

Any ideas? PS: not really wanting to spend much on a new laser since i just got a huge speeding ticket and was doing this as a favor.. the ticket will leave me with about $5 in my bank.. so im looking for cheap solutions!!

Yupe sounds like your laser. You could try taking the dvd pot down a little more but dont go below 800. Also why would it be your responsibility to by the guy a new laser. Sounds like it was on its last legs anyway.

well i did it for a friend and told him i wud mod it for him.. then i said that the laser wasn't good enough to read dvd-rs.. he said ok then just take out the modchip.. now it wont read any oringals!!

Well that sucks but it still sounds like he originaly had a crappy laser.

laser read origanals without going to browser before modding
theres nothing wrong with this laser, better test is dvdr movie
if not read dvdr then possible laser but not read origanals its a install fault

check for shorts
lol if u can be bothered to search charlies old trouble shooting guide even told u most like points to check for no dvd

Anyway dust you are wrong I see originals go to the browser all the time bud.... WITH OUT a chip even installed. This is a dead ringer for a weak laser.

anyone know where i can get one really cheap.. dont need brand new.. just need sumthing good and cheap!

u wasting your cash dvd still wont read

ive checked the points and everything looks good tho.. it will still read cd based games!

ALSO: Mod chip is removed completly!!

many installs wiil read cd not dvd or read dvd not cd , certain pions control cd others dvd

answer me 1 question then i listen to laser died? what stopped the laser from reading origanals? here u go i answer for u , u installed and removed a chip.
common sense says install caused problem, faulty install chances killing dvd not cd is very slim, the chances of shorting something stopping dvd from working are quite possible

eakinsme u got a good quality digi camera?

i did check most of the points that were even close to being questionable with my mulitmeter for continuity and they were all good.. i adjusted the laser to see if that helped and it didn't!!

PS: CAM IS A 2mp cam!!

believe me it aint laser died, if it did it was due to install fault
before buying 1 try 1 from another ps2 if u can it will save u cash

2 million could be ok, take a picture, highest quality macro, of each area u solder to email them to me
i will pm u my email, i hope u have broadband
bios 1 from each side of legs, or 1 pads 1legs depenging what u use

As the laser was working fine before hand but now isn't, I'd take a look for damage around the CD/DVD controller. Which version is this Eak? But as Sped has already said, this is an old machine & we've all seen them working fine one minute & fubar the next. Human excrement happens as they say.

In future Eak check the machine with a DVDR movie before modding.

from my point of view the dvd laser is dead
i had the same problem. i had to change the lens head
when you change it you should have the head with the serial as your console otherwise it won't work and you can destroy the second lens head as well
