Call of Duty on DVD

I've been going through a phase of making DVD compilations of some of my games, thanks in a large part to the tutorials on here.

However today I've been trying to do Call of Duty and I'm stuck. I want both Call of Duty and the United Offensive expansion pack on the same DVD. UO is no problem, its got an MSI install file that i've edited to run both disks from D:\CoDUO and it installs fine using the menu I've made in VB6.

The problem is with Call of Duty itself. From what i can tell it checks the name of the disk. Naming it CoD means it installs as far as asking for CD2 and sticks there. Naming it CoD2 means it gets past that bit - but of course gets stuck at the end of the installation when it asks for CD1. Obviously I can't name the DVD CoD1 and CoD2 at the same time, so something needs to be changed. Problem is, I don't know what or where.

The install file appears to be one called Setup.exe - i assume this file is running the show and that it is the one responsible for calling for the different CDs. I've had a look at it in a hex editor but don't have a clue where to start changing things.

Anyone good at this sort of thing? Anyone else working on Call of Duty? Know any programs i can use to edit this install file? Any help at all? Please let me know :D

@Reddraggon
Yes I have had a look at COD, I personally think its not going to go to DVD! :(
There have been many requests for this conversion, maybe I should leave a little note in the Index in post 1 of the CD2DVD thread saying "Call of Duty and Chronicles of Rid**** wont go to DVD!" ;)

ni9ht_5ta1k3r 21-04-2005 22:37

In regards to Chronicles of Rid****, it uses (i think) a compression technique called Extended Compression Architecture - hence the use of files containing the extension *.xca. I think that there's a program called Data Accelerator Compression that can read these *.xca files and possibly - in theory - extract and recompress the files so as to make it possible to fit onto DVD.

But until then it looks like the only way is to create the discs into an ISO format and burn those files to a DVD.

I've actually found that the iso way is my favorite one. Allows you to keep more than one game in a CD for feature use, so less cd changes after a format (which are quite frequent with my system.) Managed to fit Sims 2, University and Pro 4 in a DVD with images, and it works like a charm.

just realised the mac version of call of duty is dvd. no fair :(
there must be someway of doing this, perhaps making an entirely new install file from scratch?
i even thought of making a program to confuse the setup somehow, making it think the disk in the drive is called CoD2 when it calls for disk 2

Cueball 22-04-2005 09:37

I have managed this, but you do need installshield or something similar...

not sure if I was to pass on the msi and needed files it would be classed as warez...

the game files you would need yourself..

it's very simple to do, the files you need are 3.57mb...

reddragon105 22-04-2005 15:27

cueball - i think it would be ok if you passed the file on, try uploading it to GCW

there are files on GCW for other games, for example Doom 3, to back them up on DVD, so this is no different and should be allowed

only United Offensive has an MSI file, the normal Call of duty doesn't have an MSI file so converting COD will be hard but UO won't be.

Cueball 22-04-2005 17:38

I have converted COD to use an msi, grumpy is testing it out for me 1st, if all goes well you should see it soon ;)

reddragon105 22-04-2005 17:44

i was looking through masai editor trying to make my own (i know its possible because thats what its for) but i have no idea where to start! i would need a tutorial or something.

but of course, if its already been done, i won't have to bother.

thank you very much cueball!

have a look at other MSI files and see what they have in common.

Call of Duty, are you serious people? I didn't realize we were talking about this game... Damn, I shall read the title next time.

Leave the big solutions down. Just get Inno Setup with ISTool, and select your whole game directory, and make a setup. This game did not even require any registry keys, I installed it with an IS setup without registry keys set after a clean install of Windows XP, and it worked just fine.

Just make sure you patch it to the latest version and replace the original files with the no-cd ones before the install. But oh well, you could do that after the install.

If anyone wants specific instructions on how to get a Call of Duty setup with Inno Setup, just ask.

Grumpy 23-04-2005 01:31

I can say 'Cueballs' msi file works. Call of Duty installs fine from the one DVD. I am currently in the process of doing COD and United Offensive to the one DVD. I just need to confirm a couple of things with Cueball before I post the conversion on the CD2DVD thread and before I send the files to GCW.

And 'DarkLeftos' I would also be curious to the method you used to do your conversion. I will PM you my email address. :)

Nice work Cueball getting it working and all... :)

@DarkLeftos
but what if someone does not wanna make an installer based on a prevoisly installed version? I know for sure that I wouldn't like it, but thats me...

the patch will not install without the registry keys though mate....

oh and my final is ready and fully working ;)

Grumpy 24-04-2005 08:03

Yes I can confirm that 'Cueballs' msi is finished and fully functional. He has done a very nice job of it. I am currently putting it to good use and making a Call of Duty and United Offensive DVD. Will post it in the CD2DVD thread very soon. ;)
I will also send the files to GCW when I have finished.

ok any idea how i can get this baby to work if i have the german version ? some files are different, then yours :)

c0re 09-05-2005 18:16

Im not sure i understand how to do this and i read over the included instructions, could you please explain more in depth the procedures. thnx

Grumpy 09-05-2005 21:33

@Core
What exactly dont you understand? Which part do you need more information with? If you follow the instructions, here, it is fairly straight forward. Just do it step by step. Call of Duty has to be installed first. Then you are copying all the files from the install directory. But it MUST be a default install, in other words dont change the default install location.

c0re 10-05-2005 00:24

THe part where u copy the call of duty folder to the program files folder. The only call of duty folder i have is already located IN program files..

Grumpy 10-05-2005 00:40

@c0re
Ahh yes, once you copy Cueballs msi files to the temp directory there will be a 'Programs Files' folder included. Copy the files from the C:\programs files\call of duty to the same folder in the temp folder. ;)
If by chance I didnt include the 'programs files' folder in the Cueballs msi zip then just create one!

c0re 11-05-2005 14:09

...Not getting. Can you post a ss of the treeview structure of the iso layout.

taxido 15-05-2005 14:13

yeah, me too. Dosen't work.
I don't understud this instructionz!
anyone help?? :confused:

Grumpy 15-05-2005 20:02

When you have extracted 'Cueballs' files to a temp directory, create another folder, inside the temp directory, and name it 'Program files'. This 'Program files' folder should have been sent with Cueballs files! (My fault :o ).
After you have installed Call of Duty, from the original CD's, then you copy all the installed game files (from C:\Program files\Call of Duty) to the 'Programs files' folders in the temp folder.
Hope this helps. ;)

taxido 16-05-2005 04:20

:cool: !!
at least work ok!!
thank you Grumpy :o
