Act of War - Windows 98 ?
Hi,
just bought AOW,but now im very dissapoined,it does'nt run on Windows98 (can someone confirm that ?) and i can't give it back. Is there a way to fix that problem ? i remember Doom3 had the same problems,but someone was kind to made a Windows98 Patch ... |
Why you can't read the System Requirements on the gamebox, before buying a game?
|

so i couldn't read the System Requirements on the gamebox before and the official System Requirements for this game on´the Atari website are Windows98 /2000/XP (Thanks ATARI :mad: ) now i hope some coders make a Win98 Pach or something ps:kaiyooo+herc same person |
I don't know on what site you have looked, but when i got to this site: http://www.atari-support.de/index.php?product=2589 , i can't see any WIN98 !!!
|
READ HERE:
http://www.atari.de/productpage.php?productID=461 i think it does'nt matter if it's the collectors edition or the normal one (that would be total unfair) ps : können wir deutsch reden ? |
@herc
Yes I can clearly see it says Win98! If I was you I would be demanding a refund if you cannot get the game to work on your Win98 system! ;) P.S: and why do you have 2 user names? :confused: |
Did you update to latest patch for game?
Have you installed GFX card drivers? Have you installed DirectX 9? Do you have compatible GFX card and Sound Card? |
Also Securom have released an updated exe for the game here
http://www.securom.com/support/custo...2/actofwar.zip I think its for english not sure on german etc |

I dunno, but its straight from securom so I doubt there is any badness involved, and it may possibly be a no-cd seeing as many are having problems with their latest protection :)
|
Well the file is not a crack. I tried first installing from my backup, applied the RLD crack to start the game once, reverted to original .exe. Patched the game, tried to start it. It says "no disc inserted". Applied the file, still the same message.
Uninstalled the game, installed from my original disc, started it once with CD in drive, patched, tried to play - no problems. Applied this file, the game started for me. Removed the CD and tried to play, no go. Long story short, this is not a NoCD or FixedEXE. |

one the gamebox is opened,exchange/money back is impossible no matter if its your fault or not :mad: :mad: :mad: |
@herc
they didn't answer???wtf??? |
Send more mails to them, if they still refuse to answer get regged in their official forums (if you aren't). If that does not help write what has happened on some big sites (surely you have some real geeky site in germany too) that often helps alot.
About the open-box-"law" it is the same here in sweden, the only chance to get a new one is if the CD was broken when the game was purchased. Sometimes not even that will be enough for them, as they claim that you have broken it yourself... :mad: |
I know this is none of my business but you have 2 options..
either buy winxp home for $50 (almost the same as a videogame) and then you can play the game. (and life will be better in general.. but that's not my business) Or be angry about not getting a refund and losing $50 .. .. Edit: Of course there is ebay.. but.. you want to play the game right? |

install all the other drivers,programs,games... but i think sometime it has to be...thanks again ATARI i hope the game is worth the trouble :rolleyes: |
I just wiped XP so I know what you mean .. I finally migrated from my trusty old 15GB HDD to a 160GB as a C: Drive .. (I had 5 other hard drives running in the box but the C: was a 15GB)
The drivers are not a problem at all .. between driverguide and manufacturer's websites.. you will get drivers for all the obscure hardware.. XP has MOST of the drivers built in or on windows update.. the problem is that you will lose "shutdown to dos" .. which is easily fixed by DOSBOX.. I recommend putting XP, if you have enough RAM .. performance will be better and life will be better in general.. (if you're annoyed by the new interface you can make it more classic) |
I bought it and tried on a smaller PC with win98 on it, and it worked fine for me.
Then I got bored a bit and made a proper +2 trainer (since other ones *cough* dont work *cough*) :P |

from the Atari-support and there confirmed that this game runs only on Win2000/XP, what is the size of your AOW exe (12,943 kb?) ? maybe you can upload this one on rapidshare ? |
It worked.
Specs are 1.3ghz Duron 512mb ram Geforce FX5200 256mb Audigy S/card 120GB SATA HD Latest drivers and directx9c installed, oh and this Win98 was SE. What is yours? If it didnt work then how did I make the trainer for it? To make that I have to have run the game. |
hmmm...my specs:
AMD 2400XP 512MB RAM(Kingston) Inno Geforce3 onbard soundcard DirectX9c also Win98SE again,what's the size of your exe,upload this one ? |
Ill tell you just now, it was the original exe from the game. Didnt use a no-cd at all.
20.4MB is the size. |
@Dabhand
Hehehe youve got 'herc' stumped! He wouldnt be real happy to know you have it working on 98! I certainly hope with all the trouble he is having that the game is worth it when he does get it working! If he gets it working! :D |
Game is nice :)
Its like C&C reinvented, the installer was good also with the 5 min newscast while the game installed, very good idea to get you in the mood sorta :) |

the size of my original exe is 12,943 kb (not a no-cd patch/crack), maybe because its the german version can you upload your's ? ATARI http://www.smilies-world.de/smilies/..._smilies/1.gif |
@herc
I really do sympathise with you but you cant ask for original exe's here! Its against the forum rules. ;) |
@herc try the securom fix from first page, they released a game exe for anyone having problems starting the game.
its about 20mb also. |
The above mentioned Atari Homepage Link fools the users.
Neither the collectors nor the normal gamebox have win98 in their requirements. Just seen today in store... |
herc i sympathize .. but here's the problem .. are you willing to go through all that to get the game to work .. only to find that -since atari say 98 is unsupported- the game is untested on 98..
ie. bugs with no hope for a patch to fix them OR .. bugs that already exist in the game and the new patch that fixes them doesnt work in 98.. (even if u get the game to work by exchanging exes or performing small miracles) |
i'll try the new exe...
|
well well what a mystery...this exe works,the game startshttp://www.smilies-world.de/smilies/...ge/biggrin.gif
it still crashes (ingame),but i know that is a old driver now somebody PLEASE make a no-cd with this exe !!! ...those Atari-guys are dumber than a brick...http://www.smilies-world.de/smilies/.../haende/39.gif |
There you go, only if you read that earlier post I said first :P
|
I am glad it all worked out in the end
|
I noticed that after installing the patch I got a new process called "UASecuROM v7" or whatever it was. Something similar atleast.
And when I uninstalled the game, the process was still there. :mad: This is getting just like starforce. Protections not being removed... gaaaah Have anyone seen any SecuROM cleaner similar to the Starforce cleaner that showed up? @herc, nice the game started, too bad it crashes... And Atari being dumb I doubt, its more like they wants their customers to be able to play what they buy. I like that. :D |
Atari arent that good with getting patches organised, you just have to look at the god awfull Enter the Matrix :\

First off it was a licensed game and no real effort had been put in it (it felt like that). And the game having some serious issues upon release didn't make it any better. But I have faith in developers, someday they might turn out being real good releasing patches and fixing problems. |

Making good games is like performing small miracles. But saying "anyone can make a bad game" is so not true either. |
tbaher, nicely said! Without scientists and hackers, who don't give a f*ck about real life and live for making quality inventions, including but not limited to hardware and software, this whole technology would be nowhere!

Oh, by the way, I finally had the time to look into the game under Windows 98. It doesn't launch, saying it is missing some exports from WMVCORE.DLL. Probably, it uses some Windows Media Format 9+ package which are not available for Windows 98 anymore...
I don't believe that a Windows 98/ME compatibility patch for this game would be as easy to do, if possible at all, as for DOOM 3...! Joe |
