Ritek vs. Taiyo Yuden

Ok, I need to know which one most of you prefer. I just got an order of Taiyo Yuden in. I also have about half a spindle of Ritek left as well. On this website, most people say that either Ritek or Taiyo Yudens are great...but which one is better? Here is what I found using Dvdinfo Pro. When I read my Ritek 8X DVD-r's it shows the code "RITEKG05". It also verified that the media is truly 8X. I popped in my Taiyo Yuden and it also verified the media to be 8X, but the code was "TYG02". Everyone says that these media are equal, but can a G02 media really perform as well as a G04 or a G05 media? Please help and post your opinions on this. Thanks in advance.

I prefer either Taiyo Yuden discs or TDKs new TTG02 Taiwan dye :)

I like the Taiyo Yuden dvd-r. All my PS2, Xbox and movie backups work great.

Good to hear from you dust, I pay $0.37 for Ritek 4x dvd-r and $0.48 for 8x TY. BTW, are you talking about using a mini Ritek that will fit into the gamecube??

I have done more research on this. It seems that with games that burn close to the edge (Def Jam Fight for NY, 4.6GB; Starwars Battlefront 4.5GB and other large games like Mercenaries) the Taiyo Yuden media out performs the Ritek G05 media. How is this possible if the Taiyo Yuden dye is G02 and my Ritek dye is G05.

lufcfan 12-02-2005 02:02

Taiyo Yuden use the same G0 prefix - but it isn't the same dye :)

dust2dust 12-02-2005 04:56

bad quality at edge normally b grade should be sold as such
were your go5 branded? a grade? bought from someone you trust ie unbranded are u sure they a grade

personally i using g04 inkjet printables, burns to 4.5gb np everytime,

ty i rate highly never had problem, just gamecube cant read them, well 1 i did my testing on couldnt, would be interesting to get some feedback on other peoples gamecube

TylerDurden 12-02-2005 07:27

You could try asking in the gamecube section. I know its a bit empty in there but a few people in there could help you out.

Ritek vs. TY

I haven't modded my PS2 yet, but I'm using my experiences from my Xbox. TYG02 work great. When burning Halo 2, (takes up a full DVD-R), the Ritek G05's produced 2 coasters (1 bad write, 1 dirty/damaged disc). The TYG02 worked perfectly. The G05's are unreliable for me. Sometimes they work perfectly, and sometimes they give me problems. I've never had a problem with the TY's tho. If you want to use Ritek, I reccomend using the G04's Premium Grade, as they seem to be more stable/reliable then the G05's.

lol i could but not that important to me, info would been useful here to see if ty are less reflective :D

seaneyb2003 13-02-2005 08:19

whats better then, i may have to change my ps2 laser soon caus i can hear mine making a bit of noise where my old one didnt. Bloody preowned consoles  . Now as i should get my modchip waited 3 weeks from worldmodchips still hasnt come! after many emails i dont trust him and reported it to paypal. So when i do get my crystal i should be looking for this.

I usually use riteks but there pritty hard to get my usual decent ones now ridata are using different dyes which in the pics look prityy light. Im currently using ridisc from svp in packs of 10 there the purple and silver toped ones. I havent had 1 problem with them. I still say riteks but i havent tried ty yet. Anyone know a good supplyer in the uk?

dust2dust 13-02-2005 08:26

svp go4 inkjet printables ;)

seaneyb2003 13-02-2005 08:56

is that what you use?

TylerDurden 13-02-2005 09:25

Ok I just moved this thread to the CD/DVD Media section since it had more than just the ps2 console involved. :)

I guess Taiyo wins...

I just backed up NBA Street Vol. 3. The game was 4.698 GB. That is a pretty huge game and it burned all the way to the edge of the disc. Like Dust said, some media gets bad quality towards the edge, and I have tried 4 top rated brands...(TDK, Ritek, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden). In all of those experiments Taiyo Yuden outperformed the others with the larger sized games.

Now as a point of refernce I will make a comment about Ritek and Taiyo Yuden when not using a mod chip. My cousin uses the Swap Magic discs for his backup method (yes he is converting to a chip soon). What we found is that no matter how good the media is, how good the burn is, it seems that with the larger games (the ones with also a large TOC as well), do not have good backup qualith. So in his case, even backing up his games with superior media will not yield positive results as long as the backup is the same size or larger than the TOC on the Swap Disc.
