Halo 2 Backup Problem
I backed up my Halo 2 game asap (I have a habbit of ruining my cds/dvds quickly) and I went to boot it up and it goes to a black screen, then back to the dashboard. My XBox is modded and plays other backed up games, just not this one.
Anyone got any ideas? |
i heard halo 2 is like just too big to fit on a dvd
delete like dashupdate.xbe of course this info is comin from tylerdurden.... |
Bahaha you kill me smalls..
The Halo2 Tylertorial Copy method.. Get the files onto your pc.. Go into the binks folder.. Backup both the CREDITS file and INTRO into a different folder.. Rename the backup of the intro file, to the credits file.. (use the exact file name).. Move it back into the original binks folder.. (Replace the Original Credits file with the renamed Intro file).. This is 345 mbs replaced with 13mbs.. Thus eliminating 332mbs of data. Only hitch is.. when you beat the game the intro will play instead of the credits.. But that will make it small enough to copy to a dvdr.. This has concluded the Tyler Durden method of copying Halo2.. If you want to see the credits slap in your original before you beat the game.. |
Actually if you just delete the Dashupdate.xbe the game will fit on a dvdr.

umm yea
tahts actualyl what i said i spelled update wrong cuz im ridiculously tired and i just fixed that so umm.. yea... |
works for me just kicks me back onto the dash when i use slayers 2.6 so i am just using the ms dash
|
Yeah AX.. I was probably as tired as you were writing the post when I read it.. For some reason I saw dashupdate.xbe and it registered default.xbe in my head..
So I thought you were being a funny guy. It made me laugh though hehe. |
Just so some of you know, halo 2 has a problem with drives with weak lasers. It will give a "failed to load map" on specific multiplayer maps. Backuping up the game and playing off of that disk might improve that error. I believe the drives have trouble reading files off the second layer.

WHat about DL DVD?
Hey Guys.
I'm going to head out and pick up a DL DVD writer today. Typically I've done the same as described here - rename files or delete un-needed stuff (like Japanese content). I was wondering though.... has anyone had sucessess burning Halo 2 (or any other oversized game) to a DL dvd? |
I just now burned a copy. It was only like 10mb too big, deleting the dashupdate.xbe and the other xbl xbe file DID get it to fit on a dvd5
|
Hey guys!!!
I've a copy of Halo 2 PAL on my PC Hard Drive.. I've deleted the DashUpdate.xbe.. but it still remains too big to fit on a DVD5 :( It's a problem of a few MB (I think 10MB).. is there any other file that I can delete??? Please help me :( |
I Found Halo 2 Still To Big After Removing The Xbox Live Stuff, But By Messin Round With The Credits File Got It Down To 4.66 Gig, All On Dvd Now.. ;)
|
Are the PAL and the NTSC disks different sizes? I have the NTSC version and my backup is under 4.4 GB. I double checked to see if some files didn't transfer over but they are all there and the backup plays fine.
|
It seems that PAL version is bigger than NTSC one...
So it is necessary to remove the ATTRACT.BIK file and substitute it with a smaller file with the same name.. |
Yeah usually the PAL versions of games are larger because of all the different languages that are added to it. Usually NTSC just gets an English language. Can we get a total disc size of the PAL versions?
Tyler! |
Could one of you guys please explain how you go about removing files & replacing them with smaller ones. What file do you re name?. I apologise for my ignorance in advance, sorry.
|
Halo 2 PAL is 4,49 GB in his total size... that is too big to fit on a DVD5 even after deleting dashupdate.xbe (54MB)..
So the only method to fit it is to delete the Attract Mode (the one that starts when you leave the game running for a long time, without touching any button on the pad, in the initial screen) and substitute it with a smaller file.. So after ripping the DVD on your PC, enter in the "bink" folder and delete the file "attract_60.bik" that is 130 MB ca. and substitute it with the file attached in this post.. (it is a zip file, so first unzip it!!!) ENJOY!! :D |
Cloud, we cannot post any copyrighted xbox files here. Next time you do this, it will wind up in at least a 2 week ban.
Tyler! |
I don't know what he hosted, but here is a dummy bik file I made. It does have writing on it whether you want to or noth though, saying the file was removed.
Code:

Sorry Tyler but it was NOT a copyrighted Xbox file
It was simply a file created and edited by me! that has the same name of the original one... So I don't understand what's the matter... |
was it created or edited by u?
u cant possibly do both come on now... |
Well I may have jumped to a conclusion there. But thats my job. I think Ill have to discuss with the other mods how we can deal with this type of file sharing and still keep it legal.
Tyler! |
if anyone wants to make their own, look for "bink and smacker" tools. They are used to create, play, convert, and modify bik movie formats.
|
on the US version deleteing the dashupdat.xbe works great no problems at all thank tyler

Help with Halo 2
I have just tried both methods that are in this thread, e.g removing the dashupdate.xbe & renaming the credits file but still no go. When I remove the .xbe file the intro fires up but then when it says loading I get an error about a dirty disc. Then when I rename the credits file on the dashboard I get unknown on the drive status instead of game.Any help would be appreciated.

Remove the dashupdate.xbe, just as you did.
Then go find the attract_60.bik file, remove it. Then create a attract_60.txt and rename it to "attract_60.bik" that way you have created a dummyfile for it. Only make sure that your windows shows file extensions so that the file won't be named "attract_60.bik.txt" 'cause that won't work. No need to touch any credits or similar. Hope that helps. |
