Urgent Help Needed

okay my son has a ps2 and we have always bought the dvd-rom games now this is the first time we have picked a cd based game crash bandicot the wrath of vortex the one with the blue dyd on.it keeps coming up disk read error now considering if i pop an audio cd in it works fine then could anyone throw any light on why it wont read this game.

evidentally his mate bought a cdr based game over about 6 months ago and it done the same

please any ideas

It shouldn't be too serious. It sounds like the disc may be damaged, if you got it second hand etc...

If it's new, I'd take it back, and try again. CD-R games aren't going to work without a chip, so that's gonna go to read screen.

If it still doesn't work, the drive may need the slightest tweak. Different discs have different reflectivity rates, which will explain why Audio CD's work but your game doesn't... :)

If it is indeed scratched, you can try any of these methods listed in this thread:

the disc is brand new out the packet.

evidentally my sons m8 bought a game round a few months ago with the blue dye and it did the same.the ps2 isnt chipped so obviously i cant back it up on a silver backed disc and try it.or could i what message should i get.

spoke to playstation they want £65 to send the ps2 back and send me a recon but i dont see why i should when it reads dvd games and audio then surely it must be a fault with the lue disk games and my ps2 wont read em.

any other ideas greatly appreciated also how do i tweak the drive to see if i can get the game working?

cheers for help guys

First thing is, you may want to just try a laser lens cleaner. Maybe you just got a little bit of junk on your laser lens. If that doesnt work then Im sure some of the people here can help you with adjusting your laser.

is there a guide how to clean the lens bud i take it you have to unscrew the box or will a cd cleaner disc work

cheers

TylerDurden 21-07-2004 13:06

Try a cd disc cleaner.

just done that no good still disc error anything else?

really appreciate the help chaps

lufcfan 21-07-2004 13:10

The try Getting a cotton bud under the lense eye and cleaning it. That sometimes works. If not, then, it's time to calibrate :)

That was almost too quick. Did you really try it?

Tyler!

BILLY 21-07-2004 13:29

yes my lad was doing it when i was typing bud

BILLY 21-07-2004 13:32

sorry to be really thick as i havent messed around with these things before but where is the lens situated and failing that how do i calibrate

lufcfan 21-07-2004 14:44

Take the top off the PS2, and undo the four screws atop the DVD-ROM Drive. Then, rmove the screw holding in the right laser sled, slide the laser off and get your bud under there. Then reassemble and try. If it fails, calibration involves yet more dismantling, i'm afraid :(

i think its the disc i had a copy of cool boarders 2001 (its a cd game also) never played right herd a scraping sound but never on my cd-rs so i burnt the game to a cd-r and it played fine, also the earlyer madden games that were on cd gave me the same problem i think it is the way sony makes there ps2 cd games

Your PS2 plays Audio CD’s but not blue PS2 CD games. Did you also try any black PS1 games? I would suspect that they probably work as well. It's probably not the laser optics. Your PS2 may have a bad Spindle Motor or Laser control IC. Check laser ribbon for wear. You might just want to sell it and get a newer station.

BILLY 22-07-2004 04:44

yes it does play the black ps1 games ill give it a clean and then try recalibrating and post a bit later.

thanks for the help

lufcfan 22-07-2004 04:44

Good luck... :)

ottoman 22-07-2004 06:13

The reason it plays audio and ps1 games is that they read at 1/2 speed whereas ps2 cd's read at up to 24 speed so if it reading one an not the other its a laser issue. also it might be a simple laser height adjustment which is rqd which involves no more stripping down than to clean the laser.

Regards

BILLY 22-07-2004 06:58

YABADABBADDOOOO

stripped it down using the guide cleaned the laser no good then started the adjustment went to about 30 clicks anti clockwise still no good so i whacked the white cog round 2 whole turns and hey presto crash banidot boots up first time everything seems okay and even the older discs are reading quicker.

thanks to all for all youre help in the end it got it reading the cd ps2 games how much longer the lens will last i dont know but my son is over the moon.

thanks again to everyone for their input

all the best billy
