True crime: Streets of LA to DVD

I only put this together as there are a lot of threads asking how this is done but no-one has really answered the question in enough detail!!
It is not as hard as it sounds! Try it! And It works!

You will need a program called ‘Orca’ which can be found as part of ‘IntelSDK’
(Use ‘Google to search for IntelSDK)
Extract all the files from IntelSDK to your Hardrive and look for Orca as it will be needed later! (Orca is in the Tools folder)
Create a directory named TRUE CRIME 1 and copy ALL the contents of the True Crime CD1 to this new directory.
Then From CD2 copy only the ‘Setup’ folder and the ‘Cine.cab’ file to same directory as the other files from CD1.
(Always choosing YES to overwrite the ‘Setup’ folder)
From CD3 copy only the ‘Setup’ folder (again overwriting) and the ‘Int.cab’ to the same directory as the other files.
From CD4 copy only the ‘Setup’ folder. Nothing else!
Now add/create another folder that contains your ‘NoCD.exe’
Now all files should be in the same folder named TRUE CRIME 1.
Go to the TRUE CRIME 1 folder and right click the file ‘True Crime - Streets of LA.msi’ and untick the ‘Read Only’ attribute.
Open the Orca program. Now open the file ‘True Crime - Streets of LA.msi’
When opened you will be able to scroll down the ‘Tables’ column (on the left hand side) and click on ‘Media’
You will now see 6 columns on the Right hand side.
Change all the references in column 3 and 5 to ‘True Crime 1’
(when finished you should have the words ‘True Crime 1’ visible 14 times, 7 in each column!)
Now SAVE it to the same folder as all the other files.
Burn the contents of the folder to a DVD using TRUE CRIME 1 as the Label.
I used ‘NTI CD/DVD Maker Platinum v6.7.0.2315 for the burn using a Pioneer 107 and the game installs fine from the DVD.
(Install doesn’t ask for CD’s during install) but unfortunately needs a NoCD.exe to play!

Why not overwrite the original TrueCrime.exe with the fixed one before burning your backup? That way your DVD backup will install the fixed EXE and your ready to rock n' roll, no messing about ;)

Grumpy 07-07-2004 20:34

you can replace the exe with the fixed exe but then you still need to place the original exe onto the disc for game updating! Leave the original exe where it is that way if an update is released you can simply install the game, Update the game, then patch the game!

BarryB 08-07-2004 06:00

That's assuming the update checks for original files before updating, but I see your point.

Anyways, people will use whichever method they find best, either leaving the files alone or replacing the EXE.

Morglum007 08-07-2004 06:12

Thats not new. This system have already been explained in CdSTeam in the forum section long ago( "Juegos conflictivos" section and then "Teenage mutant ninja turtles"). The only difference is that were just only in spanish. Well, now u have provided that in english. If you look for that game and translate into english you will find the latest "improved" method to preserve both original and crack in the same DVD. Anyway, only the crack will be installed ( install and play like original), but u will have the original executable for updates too( if needed, and that is totally untrue).

Good luck!

TIP: That method is not so new. It have more than one year since i explained how to proceed with first game (TOCA driver 1).

And you do not need the rest of the Intel SDK tools to have ORCA installed ( U must install it apart ( cause ORCA is less a mb in size and SDK are about 20 mB)) (Thats only and advice)

You can also use Total Commander (Registration needed) and a plugin to allow editing MSI files!

First, Total Commander doesn't require registration to use plug-ins. Second, that plug-in for MSI won't work for this purpose. The MSI plug-in is to access the files which are stored in some MSI files. It does not modify the MSI file database as is required for changing the installation disc label.

And not many of us can read Spanish!
I do understand there are other ways of doing it but this was just to stop the Question from being asked all the time!

Grumpy 08-07-2004 21:12

Oh and Morglum 007, I never stated it was New! It was only meant to help!

First point, I meant the program will need registering eventually to continue using it, it's shareware.

But you're totally wrong on the second point! If you open an MSI file using the msi-plus 0.4 plugin, the MEDIA file can be edited using the 'F4 Edit' button at the bottom of the screen, this will open the file in Notepad where you can edit it then save it, TC will then ask if you want to repack the MSI file, so you say YES! And Robert is very much your Mothers brother, as we say :)

What is totally untrue?

Some games need the original EXE to update!
I was just trying to supply a general way of backing up games onto DVD!
If you start telling people they dont need the original exe, they may not be able to update their game at a later date! I understand NOT ALL exe's get changed in an update! This was only mentioned as a caution! Its always a safe option to keep the Original exe's! You MAY NEVER NEED them! But!
I went to the effort to give some help but unfortunately Morglem you are only more interested in advertising your own site!! Not Helping! If you really wanted to help you would have posted all your info here (in English) instead of trying to direct everyone to your site! So when I 'detailed' it in English I get rubbished because i dont speak Spanish!
Now I understand why people dont give help!
Well I do hope some English speaking people got some help from my Thread!

Morglum007 09-07-2004 06:55

Well, i don't want to advertise my web page, thats only to give more info about.

Respecting requesting help, i have given a lot of help and not only in spanish. Actually, i participate in english forum to give advises and to teach people, not only in spanish. I like a lot u gave such info in english, but i cannot translate all my research on english cause i haven't time to do it.

To reply to the help assistance, well, i have been out here for more than 5 years, and believe me, expert people do not share knowledges to public cause the scene is like a race to be the better. I 'm pretty upset about, and i'm an exception cause i share my little knowledges with almost every that wanted it. Some moderator of that forum can corroborate such thing.

And respecting game updates, well, it's a good way of proceeding, but there is just only a FEW games that checks for CRC. Operation flashpoint is a typical example. Anyway, maybe we are some experts on installation "fixing" and do not require such files to get updated. Well, proceed as u wish.

Think and then, speak, i'm not here to make a fight ;)

TIP: Thats not only the unique forum i write in, and i'm usually busy in other forum , so try to consider it.
TIP2: Use the search button for installshield or Morglum007 and get surprised about all my post here. They aren't about "Yes i have such crack", or "have anyone that thing"?
TIP3: Someone suggested me to return here from CDfreaks, cause i forgot that forum long ago. I can always leave again if people wishes...^^

BarryB 09-07-2004 08:07

Yep, let's not start a fight, let's show we can have a sensible discussion without us flaming everyone, which is SOOO easy to start doing.

Everybody's opinion/advice/constructive criticism is welcome, even if you silently do not agree with it. You then make your own choices/responses from the information presented!

At least we now KNOW we can put True Crime onto a DVD and it will install with either an original or fixed EXE. Only when a patch comes out will we see whether it needs the original EXE or not, and you might want to hang on burning that DVD in anticipation of a patch ;)

DON'T do that! Your help is really appreciated and your english is just getting better and better...

Grumpy 09-07-2004 10:07

@ Morglum007 I also am not here to fight.
I visited your site today and was having a good read, very good site!
And I can see where the you may be a little frustrated with my thread! It is basically what you have already discussed but this is not where I got it from!
I'm no game cracker I just enjoy them. My thread was only meant to help those who dont have maybe as much time on their hands as I do to do the searching!! Everything I wrote was from searching the net (a lot) and from pure trial and many errors! I couldnt find enough info from the one source to do it so I presumed the documentation didnt exist on the Net. Not in English anyway! And untill today I wasnt familiar with 'babefish'. (Which I like so thanx for pointing that out to me). Look sorry if I have upset or offended any one (especially you Morglum007) but even if I did acknowledge all the sites and or people I got the info from (couldnt remember them all though) you would not have been given a mention (the credit) and it seems that would have been unfair!
It seems all I have done is translated it for you! So to you I genuinely say thanx for the info. Hopefully now we can all just get on with enjoying the games!

Morglum007 09-07-2004 16:01

:) Speaking people solves its problems, hehehe.

And someone must give first step, then a lot of users follows that one, and the "genuine" becomes gorgotten...^^. Reputation to that that loves it, knowledge to the really interested people.

Good luck!

Grumpy 10-07-2004 11:23

Cheers :)
