Which chip?

Hey guys, I am playing around (STILL) with what modchip i should buy.

I do like the X2 but, it sounds like the X3 is not far off.

I also like a specific feature in the Smart XX modchip of a screensaver but, as far as i know this can just be put in the BIOS of any chip.

If i can i would (probably) get a solderless chip (I can't solder very well) but, it sounds like it would not be that hard (even for a noob) to solder a modchip into a v1.0 Xbox like i have.

Thanks for your help

XBIT

X2 Lite+.....i don't care how hard/easy it is to solder, you will get nervous as hell when you see the size of the holes you're supposed to solder.

i started with a 2 week old Xbox, and in less than 2 hours i had the system taken apart, the modchip in, a new HD in place, and everything worked like a charm.

It is very easy to solder in a modchip. I even walked some one thru it online. But it can be a little intimidating at first.

Open your XBox up, take a look at what you have to solder to and decide from there.

everyones diff though
with like hand-eye coordination

I have soldered a bit for Car Audio stuff but, it was ez and the stuff i soldered was big but, i think i am going to get the X2 PRO, dunno though, still debating w/ the X3 not far off, i am probably getting an x2 when the x3's come out cuz then x2's will be cheaper.

AXmichigan 24-05-2004 21:21

come on pop
pro's useless
lite if anythin
but i still say
XBIT!

seaneyb2003 25-05-2004 13:24

if u just want a cheap chip for the time bean get a duox although i am quite a good solderer its quite easy to do i done it on my v1.0 just take ur time and u be fine

Pop Smith 25-05-2004 13:34

I looked over the X-BIT and it looks like that would be a nice chip to get. I like the fact that its solderless too.

But what about an HD whats the recommended size/brand?

seaneyb2003 25-05-2004 13:42

yea xbit cool.

rms2001 25-05-2004 14:17

I use only Western Digital drives my self, dose not matter whats its in, XBox, PC, Tivo ect. They are fairly quiet, cheap and I've had really great luck with them.

As for the size, this is all up to you. I have a 120gb in my green XBox and I have 40 some thing games on it with room for about 3 to 5 more. 200gb HDD is cheap and popular as well.

AXmichigan 25-05-2004 14:48

i say maxtor
and i say 250
because wd has let me down.. maxtor is yet to
and 250 is the max size u can have without makin a partition

Pop Smith 25-05-2004 16:56

one more thing, does the RPMs matter? I have heard that it is a concern about overheating on the 7200 RPM drives, and i would rather not modify the case/add extra fans etc.

AXmichigan 25-05-2004 17:33

7200 is faster yea
it will be hotter
but it is faster as well
ur call

rms2001 25-05-2004 21:39

5400 vs 7200 dose not really matter. When reading from a DVD to the HDD, or sending files over a network, its still well below the max write speed of a 5400RPM drive.

So you can go either way. 7200s will run warmer, but not to much to worry about.

seaneyb2003 26-05-2004 13:27

5400 have a slower rpm so it wont be as fast i would recommend seagate or maxtor.

Quall999 26-05-2004 13:43

yah, but it only matters if you're putting the drive in your PC. I mean if they are the same price or 10 buck difference, then go for the better one in case you upgrade your xbox, or want to put the drive in your PC

I too would recommend those brands though. (and, I hit edit on your post instead of mine on accident lol..so uh, sry)

seaneyb2003 27-05-2004 00:09

k no worrys.

Pop Smith 27-05-2004 14:20

With the HD, you just need a OEM drive right?

Beacuse i was thinking of getting this drive and am not sure if it will work.

Hull_chipper 27-05-2004 15:50

How come the Duo-X or Applex are not included in this poll?

seaneyb2003 28-05-2004 00:03

duox is good :) ive seen them in action

rms2001 28-05-2004 04:51

Maxtors are good drives. I just put a Western Digital in a clear XBox I just sold. Bought it for $123 online shipped to my door.

If you need some one to ship it to you from the US I’ll do it. Cost you about $20 (£11) Air Mail. Would get there in about 4 - 10 days after I get it. If they will ship direct to you, use Air Mail as its WAY cheaper than UPS or FedEx when it comes to over seas shipping.
