Problem after problem ....

Okay, she cr@pped out on me. I was in the middle of a game of KoTOR when it just locked-up. I powered it down, waited a few seconds and tried to power up again and it lockes up a couple of seconds into the XBOX animation. Another attempt to power down and power back up and she does nothing: no vid, no aud... just 3xBOOT and FRaG. I checked the motherboard for broken traces, couldn't find any. Took the x2.3 lite+ out, and still FRaG. Reassembled the whole thing and was pretty much resigned to go out and buy a new one, but she started up again... only to lock up and frag after about 20 minutes of play.

Also, in the Evox settings, it says xbox version 1.0, but on the motherboard, its got the 1.2-1.5 "d0" pinhole, so accordingly, my x2.3blite+ is set to 1.2+. Could this have anything to do with it...?

AXmichigan 03-05-2004 13:08

for the 3 reboot then flashing red and green
did u check every possibility in my sticky?

monkeyshare 03-05-2004 13:19

Hi axmichigan,

Yeah, I believe I did everything that was in the sticky. But if I have a solder-less x2.3lite+, are there other places that I should check? I don't use a header-pin, but it looks like all of the pogos make good contact. And I've inspected the board over and over looking for scratched traces. Plus, I've verified, erased, reflashed and verified my mod.

How about over heating?

AXmichigan 03-05-2004 13:42

if its over heating.. it wouldnt do the 3 reboots.. just be a solid red one..
another slight possiblity for one would be the solid green with no audio or visual.. which is what u experienced if i can recall
double check the traces...
how long was ur system on for?
around what temperature is it there?
i think u said it did that with the chip out right?
could be a hardware failure.. thats usually what the flashing means...
answer my q's and ill let u noe what to do

monkeyshare 03-05-2004 13:55

Thanks...

It was on for about 3 hours.
That day it couldn't have been more than 72-74 degrees F.
It did it with the mod removed as well.
Hmmm. Am I forgetting anything?

Just to get everything covered.
V 1.4-1.5 (according to xbox-scene's ID scheme)
X2.3b Lite +
120GB Maxtor
Phillips DVD
x2 4983(?)

Used heavily for the last month with lengthy play times.

AXmichigan 03-05-2004 17:56

hmm
thats not that hot
but add that with the heat of the xbox and maybe
hmm...
3 hours aint much though
it could do some damage
do u ever check the temp in like evox or xbmc?

monkeyshare 04-05-2004 08:06

I've looked at the temperature before, but in most of my research, I've never come across operating temperatures or overheat temps to be aware of. Also, I've gone for longer stints than 3 hours.

seaneyb2003 04-05-2004 09:52

format the xbox drive should work.

monkeyshare 04-05-2004 10:19

But how do I format the HDD if I can't even get evox to boot?

seaneyb2003 04-05-2004 10:27

yea maybe try reformat it i donno? caus it will prob work maybe the hd has died maybe that got to hot?

AXmichigan 04-05-2004 13:47

oo
wait a sec
u said the xbox didnt work with the modchip out?
of course not
cuz its an updated drive
is the drive locked?
if not then try the original hdd
if that works.. then we gotta reflash the bios on the chip cuz its a corrupted bios
or somethin
thats what i was thinkin
i just couldnt remember
forget the hdd format
do my things and lemme noe

seaneyb2003 04-05-2004 23:54

AXmichigan 05-05-2004 07:49

hehe lucky
yea do what i asked then tell me

seaneyb2003 05-05-2004 07:57

just gotta fit my duox at the weekend ekk:eek: i be cool though my buddy got me this install disk for me should be hell lot easier to install evox.

arriej44 05-05-2004 08:19

Little off the subject but...

What's the high temp when you should start getting concerned? I watched a DivX movie yesterday and the Xbox CPU temp was 143.2 F. Is that getting close to too hot or is that okay?

Thanks!

seaneyb2003 05-05-2004 08:23

thats hot!

i would try and get a fan for ur xbox or those heatsinks i have been hearing for some chip ? where can i get a small enough fan or will them 2 fans be ok in there?

monkeyshare 05-05-2004 10:08

Okay, sold the broken box for $65 dollars (the buyer knew it was broken). Bought a new XBOX (Line 06, 07/25/2003, Samsung Drive, Conexant Chip... blah blah blah). Set my X2.3blite+ in place. Got a good boot with the stock Seagate 10GB drive.

Tried putting in my Maxtor 120GB (that was originally in the box that died): got a "06" HDD Error.

Tried Putting in a Western Digital 80GB drive: got a "06" HDD Error.

Suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

ALSO: anyone have suggestions for fan replacements or other cooling options? I saw some tutorials regarding "thermal compound replacement with Arctic Silver" but that seems a bit more extensive than I want to invest time and effort to.

There are 80mm Vantec fans at a store near me for $4.99.

I can never say this enough...axmichigan, sean, llamma, anyone else who cruises these boards and helps people out, "Thank you".

seaneyb2003 05-05-2004 10:34

reflash the bios on ur x2liteplus its prob caus it aint the bios that supports the larger hdd or the drive isnt locked. Ask axmichigian how to do that. :D

AXmichigan 05-05-2004 10:48

hehe
sorry bro
u messed up
u messup bad
u didnt do what i said
llamma wont help u cuz i dont think he knows this place
the 06 is a hard drive rror
its not working cuz u maybe locked the hdd in ur old xbox
which means.... u gotta either find out a miracle way of unlockin it..
or doin what i did.. and hope u still have warranty
..
the 80.. is it pc formatted or what?

monkeyshare 05-05-2004 10:58

HAHAHA! Darn, okay.

Are HDDUnlock and HDDLockDisable keys unique to HDDs or to XBOXs? Or Both? I can borrow back the broken XBOX, not a problem. Getting it to work, on the other hand is a problem...

seaneyb2003 05-05-2004 11:30

this ott for me way outa my league ax ova to u im just administrating. do do  lol :)

monkeyshare 05-05-2004 12:48

Hey axmichigan,

I tried everything that you had mentioned. I returned the XBOX to its stock state (no mod, original hard drive, etc) and it would still 3xboot then frag. I must have tried every configuration under the sun (physically, hardware wise) but she must've been in really bad shape. I kinda feel bad for the buyer that took it off my hands, but I made sure to tell him that it was really messed up.

Oh well, I guess I have a 120GB paper weight until the hacks figure a way to bypass ATA security measures.

AXmichigan 05-05-2004 17:22

o u still have the original hdd?
good...
hmm if it didnt boot with the original hdd... could be some problem..
unless u want ur hdd to be useless... u gotta keep that xbox
cuz u did lock it? in the original xbox?
and do u still have warranty for the hdd?

..
and seaney.. hardcore is one word :D

cheers dude :p

Spiker 06-05-2004 04:24

O.K this happened to me also kind of had the same symtoms....I had to replace my DVD-rom.....Money it was on that very same game......it would play then lock up on me......just my 2 cents......

monkeyshare 06-05-2004 08:49

I've really been thinking about this. There's the two heat sinks (CPU and GPU), and then there was my Maxtor 120GB that probably runs fairly warm even when idling, compounded by the length of play time (approx 3 hours) with a heavily disk-accessing game (KoTOR). I'm pretty sure something got fried.

Anyone here seen or used that "Auto Air Cooler" fan attachment? Is it loud? Instrusively load?

Any other suggestions for fan or cooling mods?

AXmichigan 06-05-2004 11:31

they have cooling mods
and if i can recall u have an x2 lite..
but do u have ur original xbox taht had the hdd in it?
try soem of these tutorials for cooling ur box:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/fan.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/potentiometer.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/hddfan.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/water-cooled.php
i also recommend modifying the bios in ur xbox with xbtool to use more fan % i dunno if the heat sink fans can wear out.. anyone else?

seaneyb2003 06-05-2004 11:39

cool stuff

monkeyshare 06-05-2004 12:06

Hmmm. What about power? Considering the hard drive is was only meant to be accessed sporadically for gamesaves and what not, do you think that the addition/use of a hard drive for constant use and access would put a strain on the power supply? I know that it's only, what, 12 volts, but I wonder if that doesn't cause additional stress.

Thanks, axmichigan, I read through most of that material. As it is, I think I want to stay away from any more physical alteration and wiring. I may go with this "auto air cooler" attachment and bear with the noise. I tend to play with the audio pretty loud anyway.

When something goes wrong, I always wonder "Damn, did this thing cr@p out on me because of something I did so-and-so long ago with the doohickey and whatchamacallit?"

monkeyshare 07-05-2004 08:39

Okay, here is the totality of my situation...

My first Xbox died. And with that, the Maxtor Diamond 120GB HDD that was installed in it has been unrecoverable (I don't KNOW the password).

I do have the eeprom.bin made from the "backup" option of evox from that [dead] motherboard/xbox. (The "backup" was made off the stock drive when I first mod'd so the "hdddisablepassword" in it won't work for the 120GB, but for all my research, it appears the eeprom is a constant.)

Of course, there are no hash calculators that I know of for xbox versions over 1.1, but there are eeprom flashers (actually, Slayers will flash an eeprom from a .bin, I believe). So, if I flash my new Xbox's eeprom with the old boards eeprom.bin, I should be able to use my old 120GB HDD, right...?

Haha, I've learned more than I ever wanted to really know in the last week...

AXmichigan 07-05-2004 11:23

hehe
at least u learned the easier way than i did..
lets just say i have two usless chips and 4 wasted xboxes..
its crap
yea i learned not to lock my xbox
and not to let anyone else use/touch my xbox without me using it

seaneyb2003 07-05-2004 11:34

well my xbox is cool atm.

modded it yesturday and havent had any probs although i thought i done something wrong i went to turn it on and the power light flashed green and orange and then i realised that my audio/video cable was out doh! but i just put the new evox on my box keeping it nice and cool. looks well cool in the dark u can see the lil red led flash in the dark lol how sad :( :)

AXmichigan 07-05-2004 14:07

wait what?
red flashy?

seaneyb2003 07-05-2004 14:12

no orange

AXmichigan 07-05-2004 14:35

"u can see the lil red led flash"
?

seaneyb2003 07-05-2004 14:41

yea on my duox it has a lil red led to show u that the mod is on :)

AXmichigan 07-05-2004 15:24
