Disc Read Error

I am suddenly getting a DRE out of nowhere, one day it works now one day it dont. I cant read a single thing games nor movies.

You guys are the only people I know who might be able to help me out.
After researching the problem I found a few fixes one of which ive tested.

I cleaned the eye with alcohol on a qtip to clean it and this did not fix it. I read that it might be a voltage to the lazer problem. But i dont know how to fix this and dont wana mess around if there are other probably fixes.

I took it to the guy who put my chip in (Magic 3.1) and he said he cant find anything wrong with it, tho he didnt do any tests just checked the wiring on the chip I guess so at least hes covered.

I also heard it could be chip related where you change the W point to the alternate one?(no idea what this means)

So if anyone knows of a way i can fix this im all ears cos my summer has started off to a bad start.

thanks in advance

check that the orange ribbon cable is in right conecting the laser with the mobo if this is out or busted the laser will move but no data

Warlock 27-04-2004 03:31

Is could be the laser going out.

Afterlife 27-04-2004 07:46

If it is the laser going out what do I do? Is it expensive to replace the laser?

What about adjusting the voltage to the laser does that not work?

TylerDurden 27-04-2004 11:09

Well in your case I would call it a blessing (because your finally gonna loose that crap magic 3.1). I would sell that ps2 and get a new one with a brand new chip in it. That Matrix Infinity looks pretty good now.

Yes if i had the money to just up and buy a new ps2, and then pay to have it modded I would, but unfortunatly I dont, so fixing this error would be a better idea.

And I have never had one problem with my Magic 3.1 it did everything I expected it to do, and that was play backups, and it did that flawlessly. I have had a friends who have had other chips, Messiah 1, and Apple and they have had way more problems than I ever did. So if anyone knows of a fix for this DRE or where I can buy a new laser (v5) cheap with instructions on how to install it that would help tons.

gamesmell 27-04-2004 14:34

you could get a lazer for about 40 dolors

TylerDurden 27-04-2004 16:08

You do know that if you sold your ps2 on ebay you would probably end up only spending $40-60 on a new chip and install. You can almost get all your money back off of a used ps2. As long as it still plays originals.

And this way you have everything completely new.

TylerDurden 27-04-2004 16:10

P.S. And by the way gamesmell your starting to remind me of Evoevo with your recent grammer.

If it doesnt read anything at all he could look at selling it to Rich at www.richspsxparts.com as still end up getting around $50-$60.

Afterlife 27-04-2004 19:24

I dont wana sell it, i want to fix it, it doesnt read a damn thing.

Does anyone know if i buy a new laser it will fix it? and can someone point me in the direction of buying a new one?

spedmetal 27-04-2004 19:31

Ok....we know where you stand on this; we are just making what may be a better suggestion for you. But if you must fix the thing all the info you need is here in the forum. But if your to lazy to look it up yourself look over at Rich's site and there is a link to an guide you can download that will hold your hand while you change the laser.

Good luck!

TylerDurden 27-04-2004 19:50

LOL!

Good luck Afterlife, seriously.

So turns out my other ps2 ( the non modded one ) is also a v5 so i took the laser out of both ps2 and I'm in the process of switchin them to see if it fixes it.

keep your fingers crossed for me

lol im not alone :D

and if u sell it on ebay it would go as a non working ps2 and u be luck to get $50 out of it and if u need a lser check ebay i sold a few on there at one time for $25 shiped so u can prob get one for a decent price.

so far i only ran into one game that would not load on my magic 3.1 which was onimsha blade warriors which is kinda a sucky game so no loss there.

Afterlife 27-04-2004 22:23

90% sure its the laser that went wrong, cos i switched the lazers and the lazer in the modded ps2 gets a DRE in the unmodded so it must be the laser, now to get the working laser working in the modded one, for some reason the damn cables are real hard to plug in.

gamesmell 27-04-2004 22:49

it would have been better if you disconnected it from the motherbord instead of from the lazer its self (annuming thats what you did)it will be tough getting it back in there make shure you got it right before you start it up or there is a chance you could fry your good lazer
I know some people that ruined there lazer that way

and you know your grammer in not always so good ether Tyler

ihaveanosebleed 28-04-2004 03:47

Connecting a laser shouldn’t be hard to do at the laser end, I’ve done it a few times for cleaning and adjusting. I think some people don’t realize the cable connector has a clip you need to pull out a few mm’s, slide the cable in and then push the clip in. Trying to shove the cable in with the clip engaged could be hard and damage either the cable or the connector. I’m pretty sure the lasers have the clip, I know the mobo does, It’s been a little while since I’ve worked on a PS2 laser. Well, a couple weeks anyway, that’s all the time I need to forget anything.

Afterlife 28-04-2004 06:12

Im having trouble connecting the lazer to the mobo, i disconected it from the mobo by accident and getting it back in is turning to be near impossible cos its real hard to see the slot. Like i connected it and thought i had it connected but when i turned it on it doesnt attempt to even try to read the disc, so I'm assuming its not connected properly, just hoping i dont wreck the cable trying to push it into its slot.

ihaveanosebleed 28-04-2004 10:01

You need to take apart the whole bottom of the PS2, PSU, and remove shielding to properly connect to the mobo. If you pulled it out from the top inside the drive then I’d be worried you damaged something.

yeah its a b***h to hook the laser to the board theres not my elbo room in the ps2

gamesmell 28-04-2004 12:52

I have not workid on a ver 5 before but if its like the ver 4 and 7 the slot it gos in the mother bord lifts up with (dont know exsackley what to call it) its got clasp like thingy that connects the cable to the motherbord so you dont relly have to forse it in you just have to lift it up stick it in hold it in place and push the thingy back down

Afterlife 29-04-2004 14:24

So my attempts to fix my broken ps2 have been in vain.

So my second ps2 has a lazer that would work in it, but while trying to swap lazers I have done something which has stopped the ps2 from opening the disc tray or even loading.

The red light comes on and i can power the ps2 on but no picture comes on and the eject button no longer works. I think I might have blown a fuse or something. At least I have the other non modded ps2 still, just means all my backups are useless :(

If anyone knows how i can fix the eject or whatever, or knows of someone who wants to buy a broken ps2 which is also modded or something lemme know.

gamesmell 29-04-2004 15:23

sound like the modchip came part way loose check for disconnected wires and resoder them where there supose to go

You sure everything is pluged up correctly on the MB as well as the laser

Like I said before, you could have sold a working ps2 and have gotten 80% of your money back on it to put towards a new ps2.

I guess some people have to learn things the hard way.

Tyler!

Afterlife 29-04-2004 17:11

It wasnt working man, wouldnt play a single thing, and 80% of the money back would have been 280 Canadian, whiich is like 200 american cos i paid 350 for it when I bought it. And plus I allready inquired as to how much I coulda got for it which would have been 50 US, plus i pay shipping so a total of like 30 canadian, as shipping over to the US aint cheap.

Im gona take it to a mod guy i know to see if he can solve the eject problem, and then i might order a laser (need a type R v5 if anyone has)

TylerDurden 29-04-2004 17:19

Whatever man. I really meant you could have gotten enough cash out of it for a new one. Heck you said you had a working ps2. So why didnt you just sell or mod that?

Seems to me that your going in all the wrong directions. But whatever, I know Im not gonna get you to see the light.
