PS2 Case Mod

I just finished this tonight. It is my V7 PS2 case mod. I cut out the PS2 on the top of the case with a dremel, then filled the cuts with clear epoxy then back lit it with EL wire. I hooked up the inverter for the EL wire directly to the 12V on the PSU so even if the PS2 in standby the light is still on, soon I will hook up a switch to be able to turn it off and maybe even a 555 timer to make it strobe. The damn epoxy took over 24 hours to harden and its still kind of tacky to the touch but I couldn’t wait to hook it up and see what it looked like. The picture was taken in low light with no flash so the light would stand out better, that’s why it looks kind of bad.

Oh also that light inst blue, is a deep purple but the camera picks it up as blue some how.

The EL wire produces no heat. You can hold it in your hand and not feel any heat change.

aha great didn't know that thx for the info

I picked up some bright blue LED keychain lights at the local dollar store and I was trying to think of a cool mod to do with them. I was thinking of lighting up the front air vents. A couple of them could probably have replaced your EL Wire and they don’t need an inverter.
Each light was running on two 3V lithium batteries inside. Just hook two LED’s in series and run off the 12V, a $2 Mod!

Either that or put some under my brother inlaw’s car, $8 neon kit!

wicked spedmetal, love it!! :D :D

Market the idea!!!

LeonC 25-03-2004 07:27

Thats beautiful and unique, since I haven't seen many people modding their playstation 2's visual.

Its a popular fad with Xbox(s) right now.

I'm getting to do a case mod on mine. Anyone know where to get some acid etching material for Lexan?

Thanks everyone for your compliments.

@ihaveanosebleed

I did think about using LED's but once I cut open the case and saw that I had less then an 1/8th inch between the bottom of the case and the top of the DVD Rom I went with the EL wire. Also I thought it would be cool to use the EL wire because it gives off a different light then LED's. It glows, more then it shines if this makes any sense. Also the inverter was no big deal because its dimensions are only 1/2X3/4X1/2 and was very easily mounted to the PSU its self as the PSU has a lot of empty space as you know. Then I have the wires run up to the top of the case through the area where the A/C wires feed the PSU with a connector that can be disconnected when I want to take the top off for easy disassembly.

I'm still thinking of your idea too, putting LED's in the grill area would look cool also I think.

where will you get the power supply from you dont want to load a voltage more than 9 volts otheriwse you will blow the led you may need to put a resister on their too.

Well I'm keeping it but I might consider doing this mod to other peoples cases if they sent it in, haven’t really thought about it though.

Havent really thought to much about it, but I'm sure I could just step it down to what ever I needed.

seaneyb2003 25-03-2004 11:52

build a 555 astable curcuit so u can have flashing leds :D

its really easy to do i got some software to design it if you need it email me if u do :)

ihaveanosebleed 25-03-2004 14:24

A little sheet of frosted / translucent type white plastic under the logo should blend the light source out nice and even with either EL wire or LED’s.

LeonC 25-03-2004 16:13

WOAH, you guys have to much time on your hands.

Yet I'm liking your ideas.

spedmetal 25-03-2004 21:07

Here is a way better picture of it!!!!!

why do you even have to use the exopy glue ? why not just run the el wire under the ps2 lettering. Dunno i ordered a bunch of el wire... i do paint jobs but i wanted to do light mods as well.. ill post some pics soon.

spedmetal 25-03-2004 22:16

mmm.... just gives it a more finished look, no big holes in the top for crap to fall in and just looks cool, it also dissipates the light better. I did try what you suggested, and it just didn’t look as good as it does now.

I also put a peace of foil behind the EL wire to help reflect even more light.

seaneyb2003 25-03-2004 23:37

kool
i wanna get them led lights for the xbox it looks really cool

ottoman 26-03-2004 04:33

In earlier ps2 dayz visual mods (especially green led's behind the vents) were quite popular. Sum dude fitted a perspex bubble to the top of his version 3 and had a neo 4 and a multi region chip mounted on a black perspex lump in the middle of the bubble underlit by green neons. Looked pretty cool an a good way of showin the mods off. Unfortunately bad version ps2 and bad mod, still. Mustve cost a fortune to do as well. Will see if i can drag up link to his site...

@ spedmetal- Ps2 lookin V.Cool

Oh one other thing I forgot to mention, with out the epoxy the peaces you cut out are kind of flimsy, especially on the 'P' and the '2', and the epoxy helps make them rigid again.

FreeFighter 14-04-2004 10:55

For those that want another color then just a regular black case.

http://www.colorwarepc.com/content.aspx?id=29

Evidently Colorware is approved by MS, SCEA, and Nin because they offer extended warranties on the consoles they sell.

It's not a vinyl skin, it's actual electrostatically applied epoxy resins-paint/plastic. It akin to automotive finishes.

So it should be strong enough to handle the acids of human hands since as you notice they will color the controller(s) for you as well.

gtapex_trueno 15-04-2004 01:02

sweet mod, i had freedomlives.com do mine awhile back. only thing is that there is a high pitch buzz or something due to the power inverter thingie or something... still i like it though, i'm able to either keep it on, or have it flash :D
