I just blew a V9! Bad Magic 50K ??
V9 ran a backup for about 30 seconds then red screened. Restarted and now reads nothing. All my soldering looks good but I noticed on the Magic chip a tiny bridge on the pin going to the ground pad and the pin next to it. I’m sure it was from factory as it was a very clean solder bridge. I need to know if this pin is also supposed to be grounded as I believe other pins are? If anyone has one around they can test, thanks.
Is there a way to test the LA to know that it is burned out, a resistance in a certain pin or something? |
Ok, the PS2 started to boot again but I switched it off as soon as the logo screen because I don’t know if the chip is overheating something or not, I don’t dare leave it load for 30 seconds again and risk red screen and blowing a chip.
I don’t have another Magic 50K around to compare, I really need to know it that pin should be grounded. I tried to clean up the bridge, and it looks like it’s gone but using a tester, it’s still grounded. When V9’s go bad is it the top LA chip with the sink or the bottom LA chip with no sink? |

ihaveanosebleed, the two pins you spoke of on the Magic V 50K are supposed to be bridged. I thought the same thing once, spent 10 minutes trying to remove the bridge then once it was removed I checked for continuity and they where still connected. Then after installing it the chip worked fine. In fact if you hold the chip up to a light you can see the ground track connecting them both. I have seen them with and with out the bridge. I just opened 3 of my Magic V 50k's here and all the ones I looked at have the bridge, so I wouldn’t be alarmed by that.

Thanks for the info, I thought that pin might be grounded on purpose but wasn’t sure.
Funny thing about Fake chips, I alwaye got these from the same people and then they were out of stock for a week and I noticed this chip looks quite different, darker board with different 50K sticker, I can’t really pinpoint, I just know it looks a lot different when I took it out . Also the other chips came with no tape on the bottom and this one did. |
Oh also the LA that has been going bad is the one with the heat pad next to the laser ribbon cable.
|
my v9 when it went bad it it had a black screen all the tiem and the laser would not even spin it was a magic 50k installed as well and the tray took like 30 secs to open and close i belive it was that LA chip that went bad on mine i dont know if they all do the same thing it the LA chip gose but if it dose what mine did then u would know its the LA

It’s not overheating. I determined it was the laser. When I got the nerve to try again, It ran other media for over an hour. Lots of fmv’s and sound skipping on many CDR’s and DVD-R’s. I still don’t know why it red screened and stopped booting the first time. I don’t want to hurt my brain any more over this one.

sorry i thought we were talking about v9s cause that's what it says in the subject anyway
Originals and backups have exact same results there is more noise now I can hear the laser trying to focus I think moving the laser up n down I think it's like chick cheek cheek something like that.... |
Oh yeah I got the pictures how to open it
|
u may have the same problem then i remeber my laser made a nosie for a few secs on any thing i stuck in there then stoped it was like it was starting to read but did'nt.
|
so do u think that the chipper will KINDLY fix it?? eventhough he didn't guarantee for that kinda stuff??
Where can I fix a ps2 in Ireland?? I know there is a guy from Ireland here could you please tell me? |
hysung your problem is te la chip blown, sony fault la chip
most likey its damaged the ciols on your laser repair, replacement la chip la 6508r on pcb £20 removal of old la fitting of new la £20 then your laser new laser is safest bet old laser with resistnace added to ciol is cheap option (free) with this option if la blows again dont blame me, if it did to replace la6508r is £20 free fitting(ribbon cable fitted lat time) if it blew second time laser have to be replaced or it keep blowing |
to explian the dead la chip syndrone
this is 100% fact but its thoery that most believe to be correct faulty la chip causes extra voltage to be sent to laser, which melts the ciols enamel ,lowering the resistance this in turn backfires on the la as the voltage sent back from the laser now has less resistance causin la to verheat |
