developing your own game

Has anyone ever tried to create their own ps2 game? I've been looking around the net, but there's no specific info on what tools you need to use to start creating a game. If anyone knows please let me know. Texture Maker and PhotoShop are 2 things i know for making background and 3d pics but the rest

i am 99.9% sure this is impossible. first you would need to spend months developing the game then after its created you would need to make an image of it somehow and in all this you would need to have the PS2 code so that it would play!

some one did make beats of rage for the ps2 its a full working game and its free to download but its like playing a snes game or sega but it was done :)

Sounds Fun I wish i could Create Games  but i dont have the stuff to do it with

FreeFighter 24-02-2004 14:51

I know it takes up a lot of time creating a game. But what if I have that amount of time? I mean, I'm not doing anything at the moment and i would love to make a wicked game the only thing is i know once you have to burn it you would have to play the game on a ps2 with a modchip too. So it would recognize the disk. Anyway would be cool to make a game on your own once an a while and let ppl play with it knowing it's your game!

Some other apps you may need is Sony CD/DVD Generator and maybe a pss player. I think theres a way to encode pss's but I dont remember how.

if i remeber correctly didnt there use to be a game developer system for the PSX anyone remember ?

ihaveanosebleed 25-02-2004 08:47

Yaroze, but every other idiot thought it was a miracle boot disk for backing up games without a mod chip.

Playstations are notoriously hard to program and some developers are jumping to different platforms because of this. If I had to learn a programming Language, I’d pick Xbox because it’s easier, faster and more versatile. Even though I hate Xbox controllers and don’t even own one yet.

Whatever you decide, you should contact all the homebrew developers you can. Find out how they got started and how to get all the instruction sets, programming software, assemblers and all that fun stuff. Also figure out how to program in C+ language, it’s the basis of just about everything I think. So even if you don’t manage to make a good PS2 game, you can always get a six-figure job in C+ programming!

The Xbox games are created on Linux right? And there used to be C++ tutorials on astalavista but now they're gone :(

There is a piece of ps2 software called ps2 basic studio or sumfing similar that was written to make ps2 games on PC. It included a 3d graphic object design package as well as a basic language for programming. It was only released in japan though so don't know if it supports english language.

At the end of the day why sweat over programming yr own games when u can enjoy the fruits of someone elses labour. If u really wanna program then move to visual basic on PC. A lot easier!!!

Regards:D

thx for the info ottoman. i've looked around and found these:

and sorry tyler about the wrong posting :)

ottoman 28-02-2004 15:03

Yep, thats the one. Shame they only released in japan. looks like a cool bit of software.

regards;)

SupaKEn 01-03-2004 07:48

Firstly, Visual basic, while easy is not a gaming programming language, you will never make a good game with VB

Secondly, If you actually figure out howto develop a PS2 game, I have a degree in programming and would be glad to help you out with code

FreeFighter 02-03-2004 02:43

That's good to know SupaKEn, thx.

So, now lets assume we got all the software needed. Some good guys that know all about programming. And a lot of free time to spare. Now the only thing that's missing. What kind of game would be really cool to make?

I've been thinking about some kind of survival game in the rainforrest or something (since they're cutting down trees, people would still remember the rainforrest trough the game :) ). With finding some kind of treasure, competing against other teams, that kind of stuff.

If you think, that sounds like a crappy game! Any suggestions are welcome :)

ihaveanosebleed 02-03-2004 03:28

Oh oh, yeah, You don’t need to start from scratch, just do what the professionals do. Steal someone else’s game engine and hack the levels and graphics. The major coding is already done. Take a game like Vice city and turn the building into trees, you can survive in the jungle or drop a Panzer tank when the going gets tough and blast the Poop out of the evil corporate land developers.

FreeFighter 02-03-2004 06:43

Ow yeah, you think we can pull it off?:p While we're at it throw in an A-bomb.
