DVD-/+ R(W) Drive w. Live
Hey, I was just wondering, can i change my DVD drive in my Xbox so that it can read DVD+RWs and still be able to play on Live?
Thanks in advance for the help. |
Yes, but it would have to be a modded Samsung since they are the only PC replacment drives for the XBox you can get.
All though, I have a Thompson, and a Samsung DVD-Rom and they both read DVD+RW disks fine. |
 Could you post a location where i could buy a modded Samsung?
Also, if you can, post a link that would help me with the installation process. P.S. Also, with the new drive, i don't have to have a modchip to use it do I? Thanks |
I found a tutorial @ http://dwl.xbox-scene.net/~xbox/xbox...s/samsung2.pdf of how to mod a samsung so it would work w. the Xbox but, I am NOT good @ sodering stuff. Is there anyway to set up the drive w/out sodering?

ok. so maybe i should have checked ebay before posting that question lol. Thanks Tyler.
and if anyone has a list of drives compatible w/the xbox please post it here. P.S. If i get a modded samsung, is there a tutorial that would help me w. the installation process? Thanks again |
Yeah the same place you found that pdf should have instructions somewhere there to install your drive as well. Ive seen it there.

I have a thompson drive. It may be ****ty but it reads dvd+ media. However, the modded one will probably read better, plus it will read cd-r's.
|
Dude I have a tompson too and I cant stand it. Im getting rid of it as soon as I can.
Tyler! |
I wouldn't suggest buying a modded Samsung. They cost just as much as a real XBox Samsung in most cases, and you don't have to mod your case to make it fit.
What kind of DVD-Rom do you have in your XBox any way? I've never ran across a drive I couldnt get to read DVD+RW first try or with the little help of a pot tweak. |
My Xbox is version 1.0 can anyone tell me what drive i have in it?
Never mind, I found out that i have a Tompson. But, i burned a movie on to a DVD+RW disk and my xbox would not play it. Any help would be apprecated |
hmm, i have movies on dvd+r's, and they play fine. +rw's are more compatable, so I don't think it is the movie disk. What Brand is it.
Also, you have the dvd-kit right? |
The Burner is a Sony (DRU-110A) it won't burn to +R but it will burn +RW, I burned the movie using DVD X Copy Xpress (in case you were wondering, i was making a backup of X2) and the brand of DVD is Memorex. Yes i do have the DVD Playback kit. But, with the kit in, i put in the disk and it does not work it gives me the error that the Xbox can't read it. The disk is fine though, no scratches or dust or prints.
|
It may just be that your xbox doesnt read that particular type of dvd+rw.
Tyler! |
Do you mean the Brand of the DVD? If so, then do you think a different brand might be able to be read?
|
Maybe, I have a thompson and it reads every dvd+rw ive owned. Just try a different brand.
Tyler! |
What brands of DVD RWs have you used that worked Tyler?
|
Try a different brand. Dos the movie play in your PC dvd-rom?
|
Ive used Verbatim DVD+RW and Sony DVD+RW.
Those have worked fine for me. Tyler! |
k, thanks for the info Tyler. I used Memorex dvds so, i will have to pick up some Sony or Verbatim disks and try it out.
|
Ive never liked Memorex for anything man. Cd's or dvd's.
Tyler! |
ok, thanks for that. I'll have to go pickup some Sony DVD+RWs. I'll let you know what happens.
|
At the risk of sounding lame(no comment TYLER)LOL, try something simple if you haven't already. You have a 1.0 XBOX, so I'm guessing it's a couple of years old at least and "been 'round the block a few times". Try a lens cleaner disk on it.
I've got 2 XBOXes, one modded, one not. They both have Thompson drives and they both play +R & +RW with no prob. I usually use Fuji, Philips or Verbatim. One of them started to give me trouble with R & RW's, so I used a MAXELL lens cleaner kit and the problem disks immediately booted. Haven't had a problem since. I use the lens cleaner once every couple of months. On another note, I've never been crazy about Memorex DVD's for movies or otherwise. As for copying movies, I either use DVD2One or DVD95. They both work exceptionally well. Matter of fact, DVD95's newest version guarantees XBOX/PS2 compatibility. DVD copies have always been problematic on consoles, so X COPY Express may even be the culprit. Mike T. |
Actually the disc cleaner is a very good idea.
About the claim that you say DVD95 says about their "newest version guarantees XBOX/PS2 compatibility". Thats just a sales pitch. Anyone can make their movies more compatible. Just make sure you have an AUDIO_TS folder. A lot of movie editors/makers dont add that folder. But you should know that some some standalones actually look for the AUDIO_TS folder. Just so you know, ;) PS if you need help/tips in backing up dvd movies post a question in the DVD Backup Forum. Tyler! |
I just thought of something... In order to use burned DVDs in my Xbox, I don't have to have a modchip do I? I assume i do not as Mike Tee posted

You're right on TYLER, I tend to make my own AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders and then dump the processed files in the VID folder myself. Both of the progs I mentioned do an excellent job for me.
POP SMITH, a properly processed and burned DVD movie should play in any PC, standalone, XBOX or PS2. The mod chip is only for gaming, so you should have no prob playing them on XBOX....unless you have any of the above posted problems. Problems such as media compatibility, bad burn, dirty lens or if the prog you used didn't process the movie IFO and or VOB files correctly. Mike T. |
Also, i failed to mention that the disk read fine in my DVD Player (Denon, model # DVD-900). Just so you know that the disk can be read by a dvd player. Also, i would like to mention, i know i can just go buy a cheap DVD player that would read the DVD+RW disk but, i would just like to have the option of having a extra DVD player via my Xbox. As MikeTee mentioned, i will try a Lens cleaner, then, if that does not work, i'll try a different brand DVD

Mike, what is RNM? I realize it is a burning program but, what does it stand for. Also, could you maybe give me a link to download a trial of this software?
|
RNM = RecordNow Max
Do a search on the ps2 forums. There are a few outdated links to the trial but the site actually doesnt show it anymore. Tyler! |
