clonedvd files not deleting...

odd, in the clonedvd support section they actually provide a link to this site.

Anyhoo, i recently ripped a dvd to my hard drive using clonedvd. With the ISO, wich was 4GB plus the temp files wich were 5, it added up to 9.

The temp files were supposed to be deleted after it was doen and i deleted the ISO shortly thereafter, but the 9 gigs havent gone away from my hard drive space readout, it still reads that there's 9 extra gigs of space being taken up, and i've restarted a couple times already.

Anyone know what might be goin on with this?

The only other time this happens is when i'm uninstalling programs, but it usually the space it frees up usually registers once i restart if i ever run into that problem.

Moved to the correct forum..

kooldraco 17-09-2003 20:02

you probably have to delete the files yourself......... if you have winxp check your local temp folder by hitting "start" (on you desktop) then "run" and type "local settings" (without the quotes) and check the "temp" folder in that window
some other folders to check are the "temp" folder under the windows folder, the folders inside the "my documents" folder and the folder where the applications is installed.
you should consider getting "window washer" (or similar tool) which will delete most of the temp files created by windows and other apps.

spin 17-09-2003 20:20

i dont have winxp so the local settings thing didnt work. I checked the temp folder unmder the windows folder and the folder for the program.

You dont seem to be understanding the **** that i went in and PERSONALLY deleted the ISO, and the option for the temp files to be deleted automatically was not only checked, but i found the temp file they were, pretty much empty. So yeah, these files were gone, partly deleted by me personally, and yet the hard drive still registers 9Gigs extra of space.

And this was not moved to the correct forum per se, because the probolem could be deeper than just this program, and isn't necesarily about DVD backups.

- give window washer a try
- empty your trash can
- if your harddrive is showing 9gigs of info that were not there then most likely 9gigs of info got copied somewhere you weren't aware of.....this s.h.i.t happens all the time (that's why tools like window washer are made), you just have to find them.

spin 17-09-2003 21:34

interesting indeed, but i seriuosly doubt they were magically copied elswhere, espeically the ISO, wich i DID delete, and my trashbin IS empty. Like i said before, it wouldnt even let me PUT a 4.7GB file in the trash bin, it deleted it on the spot.

I dont know where or why these files, of any file in any other occurence would have been copied anywhere, especially after i implicitly deleted at least half of that 9GB, but i will give window washer a try.

I heard in a misclenous thread on google some other guy complaining about the exact same thing though. He said he edited videos and had big chuncks of files left over and when he deleted them, their space wasnt being freed up on the hard drive either. No one gave him a solution though.

spin 17-09-2003 21:42

i just ran the wash program, it didnt do the job.....nice program though.

It only deleted about 330MB worth of files, obviously it didnt find the 9GB worth, wich could very well indeed be gone, although i cant think of why the harddrive would give man incorrect space readout.

And the funny part is though that hard drive did decrease .3GB in usage, meaning it registered THOSE files being deleted...so i dunno what it's waiting for to get rid of the 9GB worth of temp files and ISO chunck that i commanded it to delete last night.

I have this problem alot on Win98. Even after i delete the files. When it says "the files are too big for the recycle bin, do you want to permantly delete them?" And you do.
Sometimes my computer still counts the file size. So i run Scan Disc. It always says something about "found files that are incomplete, they could be fragmented files, or just just files taking up space". Something like that.
I always say delete files. Then i get the space back. I think it has something to do with Win98 largest file size is 1gig. And DVD image file size, may cause a problem.

kooldraco 18-09-2003 09:53

that could the problem remember that:
FAT16 has a 2gig size limit (under win9.x and me)
FAT32 has a 4gig size limit
FAT16 under NT or 2000 has a 4gig size limit
and the NTFS file system has a (theoretical) maximum file size of
16 exabytes or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes

that's why i only use ntfs;)
if you're running a fat file system then try using scandisc to fix errors.

spin 18-09-2003 12:46

i have win2k, WHY WOULD I BE USING FAT32?!

Anyhow, you missed the mark by a small margin but i figured it out.

someone suggested i defrag so i tried that, but i had tried it once before and the windows defragger would always stop on me. So i downloaded another one called o&o defrag, wich would do the same damn thing=ripoff.

Anyhow, i set out to get a diff one, one called Raxco Perfectdisk. It was just the trial version but it worked fine. When i did the analye disk, it showed some of the major fragmented files, and i noticed there were ALOT in this folder called recylcer/nprotect. I didnt have Norton Systemworks installed so i was kind of wiereded out. I figured to just start the defrag. it was doing much better than the last one, but once it got to 37% i stopped it, because i wanted to see those files again. Sure enough there was a 4.7GB iso in there (amongst other things). But i couldnt find the folder, it was completely invisible.

So i typed its path in the explorer to get to it and deleted all the conents (couldnt delete the folder though since that's the only way i could access it), and that fixed it. Apparently norton antivirus also has a trash can protect program, and it was enabled, so i disabled it after i deleted everything.

and now i have a defrag program that works.

kooldraco 18-09-2003 13:18

it's cool you got fixed...... i told you programs copy stuff and sometimes download sh*t of the net without you knowing if you don't change the default settings

spin 18-09-2003 13:56

but that's not what happened, not for a second were things out of control or "downloaded without my permission". It was a setting on my antivirus program wich i was not aware existed in anything but systemworks.

I had thought about it, but even if it was somehow true, no search revealed the files, not even a drivewide iso search. I was lucky that defrag program stumbled over it.

Point though was nothing was terribly wrong, it was just an oversight on my part to realize that option set in my antivirus program..........

it would have eventually solved itself, as the program was set to delete its files after 4 days, and i think it would have, at least for the larger ones was fretting over.

-in the meantime when i startup now, windows gives me an error message wondering where the .ink file for one of the files i dled was (all .ink files were whiped clean by the window washer program).

kooldraco 18-09-2003 19:19

you mean .lnk...... a shortcut file like the ones in your desktop
why would windows ask for a shortcut at startup?
what's the file name....something.lnk

check this little tool out: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
it's a small little program that lets you manage everything windows loads at startup.....all those f*ckin icons that come up in the taskbar when windows loads and others you don't even know about......this lets you see and stop them from loading.

TylerDurden 18-09-2003 19:34

You need a tool for that?

I thought all you had to do was

1. Click Start

2. Click Run

3. type msconfig and press ok

4. Click the Startup tab and you basically got the same options that are on the program you posted about.

kooldraco 18-09-2003 19:50

try the tool and compare the ones that show up on msconfig with the ones that come up on the tool.......basically not all that loads at startup shows up on msconfig and what sucks is that it's mostly 3rd party stuff......i guess it also depends all the stuff you got installed on your pc.

TylerDurden 18-09-2003 20:25

Well I tried it, and at least on my pc I dont get any differences.

Tyler!

kooldraco 18-09-2003 20:52

I guess it depends on the programs you have on your pc
I get like 6 other things including my scanner software which when enabled always tries to find my scanner at startup..... and I like to have it turned off unless I need it of course.
It still a pretty good tool though.....specially for newbies

spin 18-09-2003 21:42

buddys, i stopped using win98 a long time ago. I use Win2k now, and that doesnt have msconfig.

Sure i did download an msconfig type program (had a problem with spearhead installing and rundll, still isnt fixed though), but that's aside the point......and so is this .ink problem. It wasnt a desktop shortcut. It was just some temp file that that window washer program happened to have deleted, and for some reason the computer was looking for it. I just dont like it bothering me about it.
