Please help! Image burning problem :(
 

Ok, I have a Liteon 24x burner, and a Pioneer DVD drive on the same IDE channel. I can copy files from cd's manually with windows explorer, but no matter what program I use, on either drive, It will not read to an image file, it stays stuck at 0%. I really need help, burning through explorer is slow, and a pain. Any ideas?

First thing, wot software have u tried? Nero, CloneCD, or Easy Cd Creator etc.
Secondly, your burner is burnproof. Why not burn "on the fly".
If u burn to an image first, it will take twice as long at least.
Putting your 24x burn-proof drive to waste.
Even though they r on the same ide channel, with a burn-proof drive it shouldn't be a problem. U may get a warning message, just ignore it.
Also, wot r u trying to copy?
If u can answer these questions we might be able to help further.

Tried Nero, CloneCD, RAW Copy, and DiscJuggler.
I am not burning on the fly because I keep the images on my drive. To make another copy if needed.
I was trying to copy a data cd's full of drivers/patches, to make copies of for a LAN party. I also tried a game to see if it was the cd. It wasn't... any more ideas?

Hmmm. ok. Is the cd full up. If not, write a couple more files to it & CLOSE/FINALIZE the cd. Don't leave it open.
This may not work, but worth a try (if u have not done this already).
Maybe someone else out there has some ideas in meantime.

Tried that.
Tried disabling the other drive.
Tried unplugging the other drive so one had it's own channel.
Tried disabling DMA mode and doing PIO.

no luck.

fast error skip ? it sounds like your trying sd2 protects.

Ok, this may sound strange, but try deleting all the files from the WINDOWS\TEMP directory & try again.
This is usually the default directory for cd images in most burning software.
These files are not generally needed.
Alot of stuff gets dumped in WINDOWS\TEMP. Virtually ALL installations use it to dump extracted files there before installing a game or some other piece of software.
It could be you have reached the maximum number of files in that directory. (Some versions of windows have a limit).
Either that or try changing the destination directory for the image dump.
Also, wot operating system are you running (Win98 etc).
You can also try updating the BUS drivers for your motherboard.

try to find a firmware upgrade for your burner due!you may have written too many cds with it and i thik there is a limit og discs that after that it deletes the flash rom.so you go and find a new upgraded firmware or find the version you have now and reeinstall it.

temp cleared. still no luck.

The firmware that shipped with my drive is the latest. The upgrade file tells me this.

Ok, I'll rack my brains some more.
Try manufacturer's website of the writer, or software vendor of burning program. Might need a patch for XP. Most things do @ present.

Failing that, if it is a LAN party, then just leave cd in drive or copy all to a directory on pc, & let all have access to it via the network.

Firmware is latest.
Found an XP update for Nero, installed it, but it still does the same thing.

You could try stopping all other background tasks running. Alot of programs run in background upon bootup. Maybe something there is causing a problem.
If you run Msconfig, go to startup tab & untick everything except for Explorer, this may help.
I think Msconfig is still available under XP. I can't remember.

Other than that, this may sound a bit harsh mate, but you might have to try a clean format & reinstall of Windows.
Sounds like something has got really screwed there.

Maybe someone else has some fresh ideas?

Ok. Seeing as the same thing is happening in all the software you have tried, & all your drivers etc seem up to date, it is pointing to one thing.
THE CD ITSELF!!
Try cleaning the cd. Maybe there is a heavy fingerprint or a scratch at begining of cd that the drive can't cope with.
Also, wot did u use to burn the cd full of drivers/patches with originally?
Can u burn to image on a friends pc?

I know it's not the cd itself, because I have tried many more cds. It does the same thing for all of them.

You may have a driver conflict especially if you have easyCD installed.
Or, you ASPI layer may need updating (get ASPI check from cdmediaworld)

Failing that, I'd de-install ALL burning progs and reboot.
Then re-install them one at a time. If you still cannot read with only one prog installed, then your hardware setup is at fault, else you'll soon find which prog is the culprit as you install one at a time.

hey i think that's a hardware fault i have never heard something like this again!any way after trying all your m8's answers get this burner out!

Good man. I was just getting to the ASPI Layer next.
Failing that I think themis_t's idea is next. Change the burner.
It's been set as slave & master, on it's own & all sorts.
If it is not the cdr, & Crispy's ideas don't work, then I think ya burner has a fault. Take it out & try in a friends pc to be sure.
If it does the same thing, get a new one. It's quite a new burner so i am guessing it is still within the 1st year guarantee. Take it back.
You could try a different brand of cdr's, but i don't think that is the problem.

I think the answer to this chaps probs lies in being methodical. Do as I suggested to rule out software conflict or out of date ASPI layers, and then, and only then, when all software possibilities are exhausted, start ripping your pc apart.
Hardware is usually the stronger link in the chain, and software conflicts the usual cause of problems.

I agree. Methodical should be the way to go.
It was looking like a hardware fault as he tried fresh install of windows, different software etc, & nothing was making any difference. The ASPI layer didn't cross my mind until I had gone through the other stuff & you mentioned it.
Nice to have some fresh ideas from someone else.
Nothing been posted for a couple of days so hopefully it might be in process of getting sorted.

Hey guys, it is still not working. I have one more idea which I will try in a few hours. That is to change the jumpers around. But after that, I think I might have to just guve up. :-/

If you have genuinely tried all our suggestions above, then a hardware problem is possible.
I'm not sure I'd be messing about with jumpers if you're not truly sure what ya doing.
In the end, you could try the drive in another pc, and my guess is that it'd work. WHy? Because you can drag and drop files in explorer. Therefore your burner IS reading the discs. That's why I think you have an aspi or software conflict, as the problem arises when a third party app attempts to read from the disc.
Has this drive combo ever worked, or has it just started playing up?

I'm afraid I cannot help you much more as I have no experience with Windo$e XP.
There are many freeware apps available which can run a diagnostic on your drive and associated hardware and drivers.

Just an idea...but.........windows has an option in control panel/system/cd-r units in which "disable unit" could be ticked.....

Try it.....sometimes windows disable it and we do not know why it does...Untick this option and reboot....then try to burn....hope it will be the problem

For pity's sake.

He's stated quite clearly that he can burn with explorer, just cannot burn an image file from HD to cdr.

Therefore......it cannot be a hardware problem specific to that burner as the cd burner works under one condition, but not when 3rd party apps try to command it. QUOTE "burning through explorer is slow, and a pain"......it does burn data, just not with a third party burning program.


Therefore....software problem.

I can't RIP an image file FROM the CDr or DVD rom TO my Hard drive.

Does your computer lock up?
Is the disk still spinning? Does it sound like the drive is trying to access the disk?

Just some questions for a bit more knowledge.

The computer does not freeze.
The drive sound is going up and down, up and down, forever untill I cancel the rip.

ForceASPI 1.7 maybe???
 

On the issue of using WinXP. Did this burner work before you installed XP? XP needs ASPI layers installed. Search the 'net for "ForceASPI 1.7". It's ASPI layer for XP and Win2K. Might be your trouble.

p.s. This comes to mind since you mentioned a "fresh" install of XP. Burners just don't seem to work without loading an ASPI first. Try it.

Ok boys and girls.. i guess i will have to sit all of you down and teach you people about something that has been an issue with XP since it was in BETA form...
BIONIC_TUNA (and the rest of you guys who dont know what it means to READ about XP and the piece of crap that it is!!!)
XP DOES NOT DO ISO'S !!!! i will only say it 1 time..
there are few things you need to do.. first off stop listening to these guys and just read what i am about to say.. the rest of you pay attention too...
1) since beta form it has been known that XP does not handle ISO images.. there is a special utility to bring the ISO aspect of recording to winXP but you got to download it and it is something that someone somewhere made.. but it works.. try cdrsoft.cc under downloads/cdr tools...
2) You HAVE to disable the cd burning aspect of XP if your gunna use something like NERO.. or any other 3rd party burtning program.. again tweakxp would have instructions on how to do that....now if you like adaptec then leave the XP burning program alone cause thats about how good it is.. in otherwords ITS JUNK!!!.. it has also been known since beta form that Microsoft integrated a copy protection protection scheme (that is not a type o ) into XP so that copying games/programs would be nice and hard.. again.. disabling the XP burning program should take care of it but thats no guarentee..

well you already did 3 by getting the NERO update for XP
4) make your images which i assume is gunna be an ISO, with ISO BUSTER,, i dont wanna hear any crap talk about that program cuz everyone of you who are reading this knows its the best ISO program out there... then if you want to make a cd from the ISO.. just burn it with NERO..

4) if you are needing to use fast error skip then your not burning files for your lan party.. YOUR BURNING A GAME WITH AT LEAST SAFEDISK V1 or 2 on it.. and because you posted this on the 15th of Jan.. i would say your either trying to burn Medal of Honor or Return to Castle Wolfenstien... am i wrong.. no?.. then why are you trying to burn FILES to an iso.. thats just crazy.. there is absolutely no need to do this.. NO ONE in a lan party will be able to crap with an iso but download the whole thing.. and then what.. they need to unpack it to a file.. or burn the image to CD to ge tthe files.. by then the party is over..
5) updating the ASPI layer is an idea,,, but illtell ya from XPerience.. DONT.. it screwed up MY XP when i did it.. that is after about 3 times of trying it and it telling me that it could not install it. i dont remember the error i just know that i DID download the ASPI for XP.. so be careful..

Also. how long are you letting the iso burn at 0% .. uhm hello.. again here is an issue we have all known about for how many years now.. if it sits at 0% for a while let the friggin thing sit.. my god.. if it sits for an hour at 0% then id say your screwed..

you guys need to go to tweakxp and READ cuz XP is not Windows 98 nor Windows 2000.. Microsoft did things with XP that is causing havok for people like us.. and you know what i mean by that...

im sorry if i sound like a jerk but i read Tuna's posting and NEW RIGHT AWAY what the problem was.. and then i sat here and read about you guys leading this poor chap on a wild goose chase all over his system..
that LiteOn burner you got is top notch Tuna.. leave it be.. although i will say this.. and dont ask how i know.. i just know.. LiteOns are causing issues in XP.. so you might want to stick to the message boards and look for people having problems with liteon cd burners.. ill chk when i get back to work and see for sure what the issue was and post back here my findings..

Are you using the burning software included with XP? If you are don't! Go spring for something else!

I am having the exact problem that b/tuna is having. I am not running XP, I use 98. I have tried CloneCD, BW and Adaptec, all failed to read the cd in my CD drver. I am completely new to this burning stuff and its driving me nuts.

Well i never read V elstat;'s post. i have used Clonecd successfully on win XP pro....I have never had a problem so far. i haven't disabled xp burning software...
