I had asimilar problem, but opposite. I could burn but not anything else. Ire-installed and found the same problem. Turns out it was related to have to many burning programs and some were messing with each other. No clue if there is any help here, but thats the clopsest thing I know of.

sublime90 22-04-2003 12:19

its weird as hell because it worked fine before i reformated and i can play cds, dvds, make images from a dvd but i cant burn the dvd or erase the dvd/rw its like my dvd burner doesnt exist i guess i could try taking it out and puttin it back in? this is crazy

What version of Windows are you running. I know with XP you can go to the device manager and see what hardware you have installed. Check it out, it could have detected you drive as another one. In device manager you can also unistall the drive then just restart and it should autodetect it.

dust2dust 22-04-2003 14:23

what version windows ,maybe u need to install your writer with cd that came with it (depending on your writer and what version windows)

if not your aspi drivers most likely needs updating

sublime90 22-04-2003 16:20

im running Me and i have a verbatim dvd+r/w and it came with 2 cd's 1 is nero express and the other was win dvd and both are installed so i guess i have to search for it or something

Reinstalling the drivers might work. Also disconnecting the dvd drive and plugging it back in to rerecognise it may work as well.

sublime90 22-04-2003 22:48

i updated the driver, unplugged and plugged back in checked the device manager and still nothing. not only can i not burn or erase dvds but ym computer wont shut down either because of my geforce2 (i had this same problem last year and i downloaded a driver and it worked, tried again and nothing) so i think it might be time to introduce my computer to a gallon of gasoline and a match along with my ps2 :D

When I had my problem I re-installed windows and all my programs 3 times before I figured out what it was. Fourth time I finally got it. Believe me I was ready to torch some stuff also.

dust2dust 23-04-2003 03:21

never used windows me but i still say check your aspii drivers

i have another option, which i think is kinda good. cause i had the exact same problem of my dvd burner not being able to be recognized by windows. so what i did was i did a system restore to an earlier date and it worked liked a charm again. to this day i havent had a problem with it. so give system restore a shot..it might work...it did for me :)

sublime90 23-04-2003 23:50

that probably would would but i did a computer reformat and reformating is like buying it brand new starting from scratch if you will. thats why im suprised its not working because it worked when i first bought and plugged it in, and now its being an asshole like this

thanks

as dust says, ASPI layer

then, presumably you are using RecordNow/Primo, re-upgrade your PX engine to latest version 390

keep us posted :)

sublime90 01-05-2003 12:51

ok i downloaded that force aspi and did INSTASPI and still the same thing. before when i used nero express, right above where it says "what would you like to burn" there used to be a box that would let me select my cd burner or my dvd burner, now i dont have that option and its only reading my cd burner when i try to burn something, same thing with nero burning rom whent he wizard comes up i can only click on cd not dvd, and finally for recordnow max, it shows my dvd burner but i cant make it the host its like the dvd burner doesnt exist..only cd burner

I've had this experience twice now with bundled software, the best thing I can recommend is use a version of nero that was'nt bundled, it worked 4 me both times.

sublime90 02-05-2003 19:20

ok i unistalled nero and tried again still no luck, i think im going to strip my computer down (remove the dvd burner, geforce2, ram ) and reformat so its like i just bought it and then try adding things on again. thats all i can think of that'll work. the last time i reformated i left the dvd burner installed so maybe that could have been the problem

Headly 02-05-2003 19:54

Thats ruffly what I had to do. I did not remove my drives but I did a complete re-install and added my burning software one at a time. Turns out that fireburner was giving me the problem.

sublime90 04-05-2003 18:12

what i did was removed my cd burner that came with the pc and put in the dvd burner as the master. and the computer didnt recognize it at all like i had no burner installed at all im lost with this **** now.

sublime90

bighap 04-05-2003 23:50

Maybe disableing/removing the cd burner before taking it out might have helped.

dust2dust 05-05-2003 00:03

when u put dvdwrter in as master did u change jumper settings

set dvd to master cdwriter to slave

sublime90 05-05-2003 16:10

heres a few things ive tried. i set the dvd burner as slave and cd burner as master, no luck.

dvd burner as master cd burner as slave, no luck

dvd burner as master all by itself, no luck

dvd burner as slave to the hard drive, it noticed the burner but couldnt burn dvd's only cd's

and now my set up it cdburner master and dvd burner slave and my computer doesnt see any cd-rom at all

sublime90

and yes i changed the jumper settings all the times

i still dont understand why it wouldnt recognize the dvd burner as a master all by itself when it recognized it linked up with the cd burner

dust2dust 06-05-2003 01:02

im sure its not this but its only thing i can think of
is it possible
are u sure u use the slave ide cable and not (a third ide cable which some pc now support)

ps check your aspi layers
try unistalling the ide controllers as to the drives and let it reinstall the ide controllers

dust2dust 06-05-2003 01:14

many burning programs wil change yor aspi when u install it

unistall all burning software
update your aspi
unistal reinstall your burners

check device manager (before loading any burning software
are the drives recognised correctly???????

then install 1 bit of software, preferably prassi or recordnow (update pxengine),if u not got them use nero
check if drive works
add each writing software one at a time checking if writer still works

once i installed instantcd/dvd( old version i think it was this program) when installing it mentions aspi layers and it has its own, once installed my pioneer 103 as it was then wouldnt work
funny thing is the software was bundled with my drive

Seven O Two 06-05-2003 01:47

damn thats a huge problem, get at me if nothing works, im sure i can help you

Pellinore 07-05-2003 13:30

Do you have the lastest version of Nero? Had this problem back with record now max, the version I had did not see my DVD burner. But I updated the software to the lastest version and it saw it fine.
