HK Silver DVD's

Should an HK Silver dvd work on an unmodded PS2?

Reason being all 3 of mine are modded but m8 of mine has unmodded early version and can't get hk silver to work.

Unsure whether u have to be modded or just a reflectivity/poor laser issue.

ottoman 02-04-2003 07:28

Come On!!!

Someone must have a HK Silver and an unmodded PS2 lying around!!

Do I have to rip the messiah out of one of mine to test it?

The only reason I ask is that HK silvers are pressed and are exact back-ups of the original and therefore it would stand to reason that it should work in an unmodded PS2.

Can anyone enlighten Me??

faz2002 02-04-2003 08:41

no, you need a chip i think mate

gm 02-04-2003 09:44

is it a game of film films will work on an unmodded machine games wont.

PikachuX 02-04-2003 09:57

Yup for sure, HK silvers won't work on an unmodded machine unless it's a movie. I can actually vouch for that because I had an unmodded machine and a HK silver didn't work on it.

egomaniacal1 02-04-2003 12:24

can i ask where online HK silver discs can be found?

ottoman 02-04-2003 16:26

Probably not. It against the forum rules. Check yr PM's though matey.

Thanx for the replies. Thought that this'd probably be the case although as far as I know an HK Silver is a pressed exact copy of the original so in theory should work.

Not even gonna try and get my head around it!

Doesn't bother me. All 3 of my PS2's modded so not too bothered and as far as my m8's concerned, its just another reason for him to let me drop a messiah 2 in his PS2.

Once again ta for replies.

charlie_ps2 02-04-2003 16:45

Needs a modchip. Search the forum on the word "wobble" and you'll find the explanation that I've given before. (I think it was on this forum).

hyungsup 03-04-2003 12:46

I searched and don't know which ones....
What is HK silver anyway??? are they backups aswell???
Why are the catagorised different?

ottoman 03-04-2003 14:37

An HK Silver is a back-up thats been pressed in a professional dvd creator and not burnt on a dvd writer.

egomaniacal1 03-04-2003 21:52

So HK Silvers are 9.4gb pressed blanks...or they are pre-made back-ups and therefor illegal? If so i use them to back-up DVD9 games fully with my Sony DRU-500a? And just what does the "HK" stand for?

bighap 03-04-2003 22:08

You can not copy dvd9 games unless a rip kit is made for it to shrink it down to 4.7 gigs. HK=Hong Kong

egomaniacal1 03-04-2003 22:21

Then if that is the case bighap....what is all the fuss over these discs then? Just curious....i mean am i missing something here or what....if a dvd9 game can't be exact copied to these discs no more than any other disc that will fit in any DVD burner on the market....then whats so special about them over regular dvd-r discs i can buy?

A03 04-04-2003 00:27

HK Silvers are nothing special however as someone explained
They're stamped/pressed and silver like as if you were to buy a music CD..or Regular Ps2 DVD Format Games I suppose..
But once again the Q&A towards whether DVD9 can be copied or not is NO!!
Consumers can only purchase DVD5 Blanks and Burners only support DVD5 Format Discs..DVD9 are NOT BURNED they're pressed..Someday sometime DVD9 burning technology will appear..For all we know it's already around the corner just hasn't surfaced yet..

egomaniacal1 04-04-2003 02:44

So they are basically getting rave reviews for their look right....i guess i get it. I just thought that people were saying they were pressed like actual DVD9 discs(ie two layers on one side)....but really people are talking about them becuz they look like regular PS2 games...albeit without labels unless u make your own. Seems stupid now but to each his own i guess....thanks A03 for the clarification. :-)

ottoman 04-04-2003 03:57

Right, simple explanation.

A HK Silver is a backup made in a professional dvd pressing machine. Yes, you can get dvd9 HK Silvers because you can press dvd9 discs and therefore u can get Xenosaga full unripped back-up on an HK Silver.

You cannot make HK Silvers on a dvd burner as a dvd burner does not press dvd's, it burns them and u can only burn 4.7GB dvd's.

The reason that HK Silvers r good is because you can make a back-up of a dvd 9 game ( i.e you can get a dual layer HK Silver) however you cannot make hk silvers yourself unless you spend thousands on a dvd pressing machine.

Also even 4.7GB HK Silvers have better reflectivity than a dvd-r and should therefore play better in your PS2.

Also they are just as illegal as dvd-r copies unless you own the original.

They also don't work on unmodded PS2's even though they r exact copies of the originaldue to 'Wobble!!??'

Regards to all

egomaniacal1 04-04-2003 04:39

Ok i really get it now....thanks a lot ottoman. DVD9's are pressed i already knew....but didn't know about a special machine to press them. How much exactly do they cost and where online can they be bought....just curious....at this exact moment i don't have a few thousand laying around the mansion that i can spare....lol.

Also you answered another question i asked which was are they blanks or pre-made back-ups....so they are pre-made back-ups right? Muy illegaloso si?

And they are so special because you can get any game fully buned/ripped/pressed....whatever....to one of these discs?!?! Now i see tha light.....:D

mud ver.2 04-04-2003 10:37

I always thought that HK silvers were a DVD5, and HK golds were DVD9.

hyungsup 04-04-2003 13:40

Where can I get those?? could you pm me???

MegaPyro6 04-04-2003 21:44

The reason HK silvers are better is that they are pressed. A pressed disc has clear defined grooves and bumps. A burnt cd just has opaque and non opaque sections, that essentially funtion the same way as grooves and bumps on a pressed disc.

Sorry can't agree with that statement above..
Not all Pressed Media's are great especially HK's at that..
I hear so many complaints about how they don't boot all the time..I'm sure where and how and what type of media's etc does factor into it and pending on the machine's Laser has to something to with it but just b/c it's pressed doesn't mean it's great..I'm sure they're better than burns but it's not always the case either..

dust2dust 05-04-2003 03:49
