Having some dvd-r problems....could use some help...

So here is the issue.....

For some reason I am having problems recording from the harddrive to the dvd burner.....I went ahead and put a bunch of games onto my cpu and when I go to burn from the image I always get error messages......no matter what speed I burn at...

Now I have:

emachines...766mhz w/ 512megs ram
Windows ME
16x dvd rom
pioneer 104 (which I thought was bad so they sent me out a brand new one)

I have the Messiah modchip no-swap.....not a clone.....

I am using:

Apple media and also
Princo

For the most part this is what I have been doing:
I use prassi primo dvd
I am following charlies dvd instructions to the tee......

I have tried burning at 1x, 2x, max.....
I have tried apple, princo 1 and 2x discs.....
I have tried to create the global image at max, medium, and minimum speeds......

I cannot do a disc-to-disc copy of a previous burned game.....

I CAN do a disc-to-disc copy from an original game
I CAN do a global image on the cpu and burn from the on some games.......

What is my problem here?....Any help would be greatly appreciated.....this is really killing me here....

Now is it because of the newer games and the copyright that is not allowing me to burn a copy?......
Do I need to relace/patch that copyright before I can burn the game?

BG 05-12-2002 12:41

Its not because they are newer games.....

I would suspect the setup of your A04....

How is it connected? Master, Slave...?

Is it on the same ide cable as your hardrive?

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 12:57

bg....

thanks for the quick reply....

It is setup as a slave on the secondary ide slot, the only other thing it is connected to is the dvdrom (set up as master)....

The hadddrive is connected by itself to the Primary master Ide slot .......

it does not make much sense that some games will burn and some will not.....(burning to cd from a global image)

bighap 05-12-2002 13:04

It should be connected a master for full fuctionality.

BG 05-12-2002 13:05

Have you tried installing the PXEngine update?

It may help your problem. Just use the search button and search for "pxengine"... You should find a link to download it, if you have not done so already....

Have you noticed if the games you CAN burn are around 1 gig or less in size, and the ones you CAN'T burn are over 1 gig?

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 13:12

fellas....

Bighap.....

I will connect it as a master and see what happens......will it make that big of a difference set as a slave?

BG.....

No I have not installed the px engine update....
will that make a big difference?

Also I have not noticed that the games under 1 gig burn and that the ones over dont.....

If this is the case, is it because of the px engine update?

Are you referring to the update that is in your downloads page from your website?....or the one that comes with the primo download from your website?

bighap 05-12-2002 13:16

Thats what the book recommends and people have had problems when connected as slave and then switch to master and everything is fine. As BG said a PXengine update is another common fix.

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 13:24

bighap......BG......

lt me go and install the psxengine update and switch to master and I will get back soon......

thanks again for all the help....

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 16:18

ok....heres the update...

some work ok, and some still do not work.....wait a sec....

ok so on harddrive 1 I placed the pxengine on and built an image from a game that previously did not work, and seemed to work fine.....

Now on the second harddrive:

It will not work whatsoever.....I could not burn at any speed...nothing worked.....

here is the error message:

ERROR 10 AT SECTOR 1779072 -BUFFER UNDERRUN- COMMAND 2A SENSE:05 ASC:21 ASCQ:02

but if I have the AUTO INSERT NOTIFICATION ON....affect the burning?

for some reason I remembered that I did not change the settings on the second harddrive.......will this make the difference?

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 17:07

ok...

Have been trying to burn nhl 2003 for the past few hours....

NO LUCK.....

I installed the psengine update......NO LUCK
changed the auto insert notification to off.............NO LUCK
tried to burn at all speeds (max, 2x,1x....apple media)......NO LUCK

Any ideas as to why I am having sooooo many problems?

bighap 05-12-2002 17:09

Did you change you 104 to master?

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 17:33

bighap....

yes...changed to master....

I just noticed that nba live 2003 got to 97% then errored.....

TheMasterRat 05-12-2002 17:38

For starters, get rid of WinME....

The problem you're having is the hard drive can't feed the writer data fast enough to keep up with the laser.

Make sure you're not running gobs of tasks in your system tray.
Turn off anti-virus, turn off firewall stuff. All that crap software that may have compiled over time.

It's possible the second hard drive is slower RPM ( 5400, as opposed to 7200 ) than the first one and that's why you see more failures when using that drive.

Good luck.

Yes, I was serious about getting rid of WinME...

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 18:03

the master rat.....

actually I am getting rid of WINME.....dont care to much for it at all.......

but I wiped the drive clean......there are no other programs running while Primo is running.....what is going on here?

I have a 7200 rpm drive for sure...these games are already on the harddrive, I just get the errors when they are trying to burn..

any ideas?

bighap 05-12-2002 18:19

I posted your problem in the dvd backup forum and the cd/dvd writer forum. Maybe somebody in one of those forums has an answer for your problem.

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 18:35

bighap/.....

thanks man...it really makes no sense at all.....

It is to my understanding that it is all pretty simple....

you have a good cpu
with windows 2000/ME (used only for ps2 games)
a new pioneer 104 dvdr
apple media
a large 120gig 7200rpm drive
new games

the games load onto the harddrive fine but always error when you try to burn......cant explain it......

BG 05-12-2002 18:36

Ok, is this how your system is set up.....?

1st harddrive- Primary Master on 1st ide channel
2nd harddrive-Primary Slave on 1st ide channel
Pioneer A04 - Secondary Master on 2nd ide channel
DVD-ROM - Secondary slave on 2nd ide channel..

This config. should work with no problems.
This is exactly how I have mine set up
(Except I have a 3rd ide channel with another harddrive and cd burner)

have you tried enabling dma for all your devices, and getting the lastest update drivers for your motherboard etc. What chipset has your motherboard got.

has your hard drives got bad sectors.

try removing some of your pci cards, they may interfere, it could be anything,

try these they may work or may not dunno

have you played with the bois settings???

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 20:57

BG....

yes that is how I have it set up....

and the primo dvd software is on the default settings.......

willow......

I have not enabled the dma settings, I have left everything at the default settings....I just reformatted the entire harddrive and placed some ps2 dvd based games on it so it is all default......
and that I added the psxengine to the cpu.....

also the primodvd is all set to the default settings except the autorun is off.....on both the dvdr and the dvd rom.......

Also I should be able to take a backup and create a image from that and place that onto my harddrive right?

willow78 05-12-2002 21:04

couldn't make sense from your last line in your sentence, but i highly recommend enabling the dma, makes the beast run smoother, takes the load off your machine,

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 21:51

willow78

what I was trying to say was that:

I already have a backup ps2 game and want to make a copy off of that backup, It used to do it before but no longer allws me to do a disc-to-disc copy of another backup......

how do I enable/disable the dma?

willow78 05-12-2002 21:57

right click my computer, properties, can't remember win me, i'm using windows xp, ........ hardware manager or device manager - somethin like that.... look at the cd/dvd controllers and hard drive controller or anytrhing that deals with them, there should be a box which says dma enabled make sure thaat you have it ticked, if this doesn't work, you will still have better overall system performance.

make s;ure u are using 80-pin cable not 40,

Gamespot03 05-12-2002 23:07

willow....

something kinda strange happened....
I went to check the DMA settings and what happened was that the dvdr was checked.......but the dvd rom drive....

froze when I went to the settings tab.....this happened 3 times on me.....I wonder if my dvd rom drive is bad?.......

but that does no explain why I receive errors when burning from the harddrive.....or does it?

HANS_COBBO 06-12-2002 14:30

Try unticking DMA and use PIO instead via the Device Manager for your IDE channels. I have a A04 set as a Master on the Secondary IDE and a DVD-ROM as a Slave to that. Never had a problem as of this date. See if that helps. Like it was said before dont multitask your PC while burning, have antivirus software closed and don't have loads of programs running at the same time even though the drive has buffer underrun protection.

See if that helps.!:)

PiemaN101 06-12-2002 18:27

What drive are you using to create the images on the HDD? are you using the burning or the DVD-ROM, if using the DVD-ROM who is to say the the image actually is being created correctly on HDD, may just be the high content games that are failing. DVD-ROM freezing when altering settings? this sounds like a typical driver issue with ME, as pre mentioned get rid and install XP pro.

Gamespot03 06-12-2002 23:39

still busted?.....

So the latest is that I upgraded to 2000 professional, and cannot do disc-to-disc copies off of a burned game.......(not original)....
cannot even build an image of the backup....then to burn that image onto apple media......

Could it be that the dvd rom is going bad?.......or could it be that the motherboard is just a piece of sh**?.....

I never have anything else opened while using primo.....

I think tomorrow I will buy a new dvdrom drive and install it onto a different cpu and see what happens.......good idea?

Could anyone explain what the heck is happening?

bighap 06-12-2002 23:46

Are you trying to use your dvd-rom as your reader and the burning the image with your dvd burner? If yes, have you tried using your dvd burner as your reader?

dust2dust 07-12-2002 00:12

a simple idea here
u canged the drive to master by plugging it in with ide connector did u also change the jumper setting on back 104

try disconnecting your dvdrom then u know if thats the problem

but from what i read u suffering from buffer underuns u sure its not on same ide as the hardrive

Gamespot03 07-12-2002 15:44

dust2dust.....

yes I did change the jumper settings....and No it is not connected to the harddrive.....it is on a seperate ide channel.....only the dvd rom and dvdr are on 1 ide channel.....and the harddrive is on a seperate ide all by itself.......

I am thinking it is motherboard problems......but will try some different stuff to try to boil down the possibilities....

any other ideas?

Gamespot03 10-12-2002 01:58

Udate.....

So here is an update .......

Just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me here, I really appreciate you all taking the time......

I beleive it was a bad dvd rom drive.........

Well, so this is what I did......

Put my dvd burner in my compaq with windows 2000

Connected 1 of my harddrives
and the burning worked fine.....
Actually read from the dvdr using a princo disc and worked also...

Put the dvdrom inthe compaq cpu with windows 2000

Kept getting errors.....no matter what I did,,,,,

Went out and bought a new dvd rom and seems to work fine....so far so good.....

the dvdrom drive still seems to work, but I guess for this stuff it is not any good anymore.....

Here is one that maybe one of you can help me out with also....
(this is much easier)....lol

In order to put games onto a harddrive WITHOUT having windows operating system on it.....What do I need to do?

fdisk the harddrive and create 1 primary dos partition, and format that partition?........

If yes is this all I need to do?........If no then do I need windows on the harddrive?

Also, can I upgrade my harddrive (with ps2 games on it) from windows ME to Windows 2000 without loosing my ps2 games?...

thanks again everyone for the help.......glad we figured it out...

ottoman 10-12-2002 05:08

Had similar probs to this wen I installed my A04. Finally fixed it by having dvr on an IDE bus on its own ( nothing plugged into secondary), updating to firmware 1.33 on dvr and updating px engine on Primo to latest and changing to traxdata dvdr's to burn on. Do all this and you should be fine. Also check on your dvr drive properties and check that the auto complete disc box is checked. Could also be that some other burning software is playing a part. take all other burning software off your computer until you have it working 100% and then start putting it back on one at a time. Hope this helps......................

PiemaN101 10-12-2002 12:02

I did ask the question whether you were using the DVD-R burner or the DVD-ROM to read the game but got no reply, Yes you can copy file to a secondary drive without O/S on it aslong as there is an O/S on the primary drive to boot from. Somply just do a FULL format on your sec HDD to blank it. Yes, With most new O/S you can upgrade to a newer version without loosing any data on that drive. XP is good for this but suggest you go for XP Pro. simply bott up you original O/S, Pop the CD in the drive and let it autorun. When asked about installation type, simply chosse upgrade.

Gamespot03 11-12-2002 00:21

ottoman....

thanks for the help, it can be pretty stressful at times but I seem to have gotten it.....

pieMan.....

Sorry about the dvdrom that you posted I must have missed it somewhere.......I actually could have read it and did it also, on heavy meds from a car accident a few weeks ago......

So I will try the harddrives and all........and upgrade the OS....

thanks for all the help man.......I really appreciate it......

Also.....are the traxdata discs better than the Verbatim?...is there a specific kind of verbatim to use?
