Which is the best DVD Burner at moment

Cool so u can do PS2 Game backsups with a DVD-R. Iīve seen that they just cost aprox. 300$. My question is which 300$ DVD-R or RW is good for doing PS2 Game backups. And I have tons of Animes that I could burn on DVD. How is the compability to DVD Drives? I heard there is no standard jet. So could I use my Pioneer 16x DVD to read the DVD-Rs? Would be nice if somebody could advise me a little. thx.

charlie_ps2 10-10-2002 07:28

Most people use Pioneer A04/A04. Consistent results.

MystD 10-10-2002 07:37

hmm it has only 2MB buffer, do the DVD Burner support BurnProof too? And is 4,7GB enough? I mean some Game/Movie DVDs use more than 4,7GB like 6GB, or Iīm I wrong?

BG 10-10-2002 08:50

You cant make a 1:1 backup of a DVD movie that is over 4.7 gigs without ripping it....
There is not a dual layer dvd-burner out as of yet...As far as the 2MB buffer....Don't worry about it...They work flawlessly....
Compatibility of the DVD-R's is very good....Most (not all) home players will read them. Stay away from the +R format...These are harder to read and are less compatible than the -R....

MystD 10-10-2002 09:00

what does -r mean?

What a load of garbage! Do some proper research through the tech media instead of listening to peeps who think they know. I'm not going to start an argument on the bulletin boards but dvd+r is far superior to dvd-r! The media for dvd-r is cheaper (approx 1/4 the price of +r) making it the most favourable if you intend selling the games.

The choice is yours, if you want faster write speeds buy dvd+r, if you want to sell your games, buy dvd-r!

Some dvd players get confused over dvdrw, because of the similarity to dual layered discs.

The only right answer at the moment is do not buy dvd-ram. Be aware also when you buy a drive that it is not DVD RW only (as some are). Sure the discs may still work but the cost a f***** fortune! Dvd rw are only useful for backing up pc data so have dropped in price, so peeps think they are picking up a bargain.

MystD 10-10-2002 09:26

I wanna mostly use it for data backups. I wonīt sell them. I donīt have a DVD player. So Iīll use it only for PS2 game Backups. And my tons of Animes episodes (DivX). I just need the compability of the PS2 and perhaps my Pioneer 16x DVD.

INCORRECT.... DVD-RW can be used for PS2 backups as well....Although you need to have a V5 or higher for good success....

Regardless....If you are happy with your +R...FINE....Keep it...But DVD-R is still the one you want to use for PS2 backups as of now... The +R format may become more popular in the future..We will have to wait and see...

MystD 10-10-2002 10:12

ahh so -r means its only recordable and +r rw right?
Are there Burners that support both?

MystD 10-10-2002 10:15

I dont have a bootchip yet but Iīll use the Messiah chip. Iīve heard its the best one u get and it supports almost everything.

craigwaites 10-10-2002 10:21

Lol - yes m8 I will say -r is the best for ps2 back-ups (but only cos of the cheap media lol)

I never said -r were bad, everything has its place. Dvdrw may work in ps2, but are you going to pay that much for a blank?

End of subject before we look stupid!

It not really the price....Its just that -R is easier for the PS2 to read than the +R format..

No WAY...I wouldn't pay the price for them for PS2 backups.... :D

No m8 - you either have -r/rw or +r/rw. If it is just rw (either format) dont touch it. Best thing to do is look at the suppliers of blank media. You can then compare the cost between both types. Also take into account the write speed if you are going to tie up your pc.

A very cost effective duplicator can be found here (much better than using your pc)

+R & -R are two different formats...

RW means a disc is re-writable..Where the others can only be written to once...

Sony has a new burner that supports both..

Sorry but I canīt find anything usefull on that page. Iīve found 2 DVD-Recorder. Now I just need to know which one is better. The Toshiba SD-R5002 or the Pioneer DVR-A04. Iīve seen in some tests where the Pioneer DVR-A04 did really well, but I havenīt seen any tests the Toshiba SD-R5002 was in. The Toshiba SD-R5002 is faster in reading CDs/DVDs and writing CD-R/RW and the price is 300$. But if it quality isnīt any good Iīll buy the Pioneer DVR-A04.

charlie_ps2 10-10-2002 12:43

Myst

Buy the damn Pioneer A04! We've 'all' got them and you get maximum forum support with that device.

MystD 10-10-2002 14:05

Isnīt it unessential which one u buy, if its DVD -R. Or are there big differences?

craigwaites 10-10-2002 14:11

Head & brick wall come to mind!

MystD 10-10-2002 14:14

Heres an article I just found on another forum site! I said there was nowt wrong with dvd-r but if this is owt to go by!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the same problem a while back. I had about 20 DVD-r backups and not one would boot once I installed the magic 2. Actually they boot but after like 5 to 10 resets. Keep in mind that these backups worked flawlessly when I had neo 2.2 installed. I was so frustrated. I contacted a installer and sent it to him. He received it and called me 2 days later saying it boots up everytime. Ofcourse I called him a lier and told him he was full of sh*t. Anyway he sent my ps2 back and included a game (EOE) that was burned using cheap $0.99 media from americal and one blank americal dvd-r. EOE fired up every damn time. So I figured it was the media. I tried burning Stuntman with the blank he sent me and guess what, it didn't work. It took about 10 resets to get it to fire up. I concluded that my DVD burner wasn't buring right. I owned a panasonic lf-3d11 DVD RAM/R. Anyway I started reading and it uses a different laser because of the dvd ram capability. So I broke down and bought a pioneer dvr-104 for $245.00 shipped. Now everything I burn seems to play flawlessly. If you have a panasonic or another recorder other than the pioneer that is most likely the problem. It worked for me

MystD 10-10-2002 15:19

Ahhh ok thx a lot, why didnīt u tell earlier. :D
So its risky to buy the new Toshiba one. Damn it looked so good :(

Sorry guys but Iīll buy the Toshiba one. Its risky but Iīll use it mostly for backing up my data. Iīll give u the results on burning PS2 games with it. Itīll take some time, cause I donīt have ordered a bootchip yet, so Iīll send the results in 2 - 4 weeks or later.

MystD 11-10-2002 04:45

Damn I heard the Pioneer A05 will be released soon. Is that right?
Coz if it dosnīt take too long, Iīll better wait for that one.

MystD 11-10-2002 04:51

I found this: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...threadid=11440
