No.... You don't HAVE TO HAVE ONE!
You can always shove a knife into your ps2 and boot that way.

Not a very good idea, unless you would like to have a nice PAPERWEIGHT....

BUY A MOD CHIP!!!!!!

Nem2k 02-09-2002 08:57

how much are they?

BG 02-09-2002 09:03

That all depends......
What chip do you want?
What version PS2 do you have?
Can you do the install or will you have to pay someone to do it?
Do you want to have to "Swap" to play backups or do you want a "Direct Boot" chip......???

Do a little research and you should be able to find the answers too all of your questions.....

Nem2k 02-09-2002 10:05

what i dnt get is this boot stuff

BG 02-09-2002 10:32

Explain exactly what you don't understand and i'll see if I can sort out your questions for you...

Nem2k 02-09-2002 10:36

whats the difference between swap and direct boot?

A03 02-09-2002 10:52

whats the difference between swap and direct boot?
----

It's Self Explanitory..You need to swap for Ps2 games and other requires no swap..Just pop the game in and it plays..

Nem2k 02-09-2002 10:55

swap what?

A03 02-09-2002 10:59

It depends on what game you want to play with what chip you got..
For Example: Let's say you got Neo2.5 modchip..With this you need to use certain version of Gameshark2 disc and then load the backup game of your choice..For DVD-R games you need to double swap..
With a non swap chip like Magic2 you do not need to swap at all just insert the game in and hit reset..

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:02

so no swap is better, and most likely more expensive?

A03 02-09-2002 11:05

You put 1 and 1 together..That's obvious answer..But it's well worth..It seems like a lot but in the long run you'll be glad you did..

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:09

so how much wud the best direct boot chip cost and where can i get it from?

BG 02-09-2002 11:21

You can buy the Messiah and other chips at Lan-Kwei.com ... Or, since you are in the UK... Contact Charlie_PS2..... He can supply the chip and the installation if you want....

Also, since you are new at this..... You need to make sure EXACTLY what version PS2 you have since you need to know this BEFORE purchasing one....

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:26

how much wud it set me back? a lot?

BG 02-09-2002 11:29

Go to the website I posted... They have the prices for the chips there....
Just a note: I paid $413.00 (US) for my pre-modded PS2... That was a brand new V5 PAL PS2 with the Messiah already installed plus shipping to my front door.....

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:41

is it the m-pal addon?
and does it require soldering?

BG 02-09-2002 11:44

Yes.... Its the M-PAL addon...
And yes it requires 23 wires to be soldered..... Unless you are a pro at soldering I would HIGHLY suggest getting someone to do it for you...

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:47

ah, doh! dnt no any pros :( and itll cost quite a bit to send it to someone

BG 02-09-2002 11:50

Either pay more NOW and get the Messiah or you will be back on this forum all the time asking questions like "Why will this game not play?"....
The Messiah is worth EVERY PENNY it will cost you..... The choice is yours BUT remember...... You were warned......

Nem2k 02-09-2002 11:54

how easy would it be to copy ps2 games? i dont wanna spend all this money and have no use for the chip

BG 02-09-2002 12:00

That's depends on the hardware in your computer...
Do you have a "Good CD Burner"? A 100% Clone CD compatible burner is the best to have.... Go to this website to see if your burner is compatible...Compatible Writers!
Do you have a DVD burner? (Pioneer A03 or A04 are the proven ones)

In my opinion, it is very easy to copy them....

Nem2k 02-09-2002 12:03

yes mines on that list :)
its a philips DVDrw208

Warlock 02-09-2002 14:15

Nem2k, It really doesnt cost THAT much more for messiah. If you buy a crap neo chip or any other version mod that requires swaping you must also purchase a GS2 or AR2 along with a original copy of DMC to boot the larger dvd games. IMO $413.00 for a new console pre modded with a messiah or magic2 chip is well worth it.

Nem2k 02-09-2002 14:19

ive already got a ps2 tho, and i really dnt have the money to buy another one

Warlock 02-09-2002 14:28

Get someone to install it for you, All i am saying is that by the time you buy a cheap $20.00 modchip, a $50.00 GS2 as well as a $50.00 original dvd game you have spent $120.00.

Nem2k 02-09-2002 14:32

so anyone with any soldering experience can solder a messiah as long as they know where to put it?

Warlock 02-09-2002 14:38

I would suggest you contact Charlie_ps2 or Dust2Dust. Both are located in the UK and are very trustworthy. You can email them through this forum

andex 02-09-2002 20:01

Well where r u in u.k
If u stay around Manchester than give me a call,or Charlie-ps2 or Dust to Dust depand where u stay.

Nem2k 03-09-2002 09:04

im nowhere near manchester, im in oxfordshire

andex 03-09-2002 10:36

I'm not sure who is doing it at oxfordshire but u can give Charlie_ps2 a bell and see if he can sort u out

Nem2k 03-09-2002 10:40

i have, he said i would need a new laser as well :(

BG 03-09-2002 10:46

That is very possible.... If you have a older version PS2 then it would be rec. to replace the laser also..... (older versions have a harder time reading DVD-R's.....)
If you get the laser replaced when you get the unit chipped, it will save you from problems latter on....

andex 03-09-2002 10:54

First u need to know what ps2 version u got?
2nd what wrong with your ps2 console?
3th why did Charlie_ps2 say u need tyhe laser change?

The reason why I ask this question is If u ps2 is version 3 than messiah is not the best option for u and it not 100% work.

Nem2k 03-09-2002 10:56

its version 3 :( and he said id need a change cos its an old ps2

BG 03-09-2002 11:06

andex: What did you mean when you said"The reason why I ask this question is If u ps2 is version 3 than messiah is not the best option for u and it not 100% work."

andex 03-09-2002 19:49

Well BG first not a lot of installer will willing to chip the ps2 v3 because its difficult to install and its not 100% working base on the old laser

Even though messiah is 100% compatible with all PAL version.

Thats way Charlie_ps2 ask Nem2kb to change his ps2 laser b4 he willing to do it.

Nem2k 04-09-2002 06:46

how much wud a laser cost?

ALL GOOD installers would install a Messiah in a PAL v3.... You should not refer to the chip as "not 100% working".
The chip itself works 100% in a V3....
NOW if the laser is old and worn (will not play DVD-R's) that is not the fault of the chip....
Thats due to the fact of the laser.....
Charlie_PS2 rec. replacing the laser because: (this is my opinion)
1. Its a V3 and the lasers were not that good.
2. The unit is older and has been used quite often (which would result in a weaker laser)
3. To cover his own A$$....
If you chipped someones PS2 and it would not play certain backups, they would probably be pissed... So if you go ahead and replace the laser while your chipping it, will save alot of headache later.... and result in ALOT happier customer.
