It contains 2 laser diodes, one for CD and one for DVD. These diodes emit the light that goes through the single lens at the specific frequencies.

So yes, there are two lasers in the PS2. Sorry Zedy.

So it's possible for your cd diode to go kaput and have ur dvds still working? Drat! Maybe thats what happend to my ps2 not sure though.

Anyone know of a place that sells v5 laser replacements?

podunkviller 30-08-2002 12:14

well, the diode should *should* be the same one used by most all cd readers ;), i would hope.

It's the size of a grain of sand. You can't replace it just like that without specialised equipment and the laser diode in your hand (if you can see it).

andex 30-08-2002 15:52

Another word if u want to replace it U CAN.
Charlie can it be done by bypass the laser diode with another laser diode using the chipping technique?

Dont blow me out ,Its just a suggestion!!

charlie_ps2 30-08-2002 16:08

It can't be done by the ordinary person. A replacement laser unto can be bought and fitted.

andex 30-08-2002 16:53

Ok.
Seem it can't be replace the best option is to replace the dvd drive itself.I think its a lot cheaper than get the laser diode fix

Thanks Charlie....

Ok they have a SCPH 30004R Europeon Pal Premodded Messiah PS2. A couple of questions.

1. will it work fine with ntsc games?
2. Is the laser good? Or weak like the V4's
3. will i need to patch ntsc to pal to make it work with this unit?

ANSWERS
1. Works perfect with NTSC games.. (that's the only games I have)
2. It's a V5: SO YES the laser is excellent.
3. NO... Since it has the Messiah installed, there is no need to patch the games.

The only thing you will have to buy is a step-up converter.
(The PAL units run off of 220V.. US is 110V)
You can buy the converter at any electronics store such as Radio Shack etc...

I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE SERVICE I GOT FROM THEM AND ALSO WITH THE UNIT ITSELF... JUST PUT THE BACKUP IN, PRESS RESET, AND START PLAYING...

note: This is the SAME unit as Charlie_PS2 has.... I'm sure he will post and tell you how good this unit is also...
