Do PSX Backups require a GS2 to play?

Hey, I'm thinking about buying the new v5/v6 no solder modchip for PS2. If I install this, do I still need a GS2 to play PSX backups? Thanks

POTISHEN 18-06-2002 14:16

psx backups don't need gs2,if you are going to use dvd rips(dvd games condensed onto cdr )i would think twice and buy a different chip lots of horror stories about no mod playing or trying to play dvd rips.

ryan0123 18-06-2002 14:21

That's cool. But, I've read about the horror stories about dvd rips. I've gathered that there isn't a problem if you keep them in dvd format and burn them to dvd-r's. Is this correct? Thanks!

POTISHEN 18-06-2002 14:46

i originally used dvd rips killed my machine took it back under warranty still , bought a dvd burner put my no mod back in and it's been great for over a year, you will need a original ps2 game devil may cry is good or even the dmc demo and then you do a double swap and your good to go.all the no mod really does is open the tray when the ps2 thinks it's closed,so tray wear is better than laser wear.

How would Final Fantasy X work for this? So then does that mean you don't even need a GS2 to play PS2 backups?

I believe you will still need the GS2. As far as using FFX that depends on if the TOC is bigger than the game your trying to boot. Most everybody uses the DMC disc because it has the largest TOC on the market right now...

treat yourself to a messiah
u wont b dissapointed

ryan0123 19-06-2002 11:23

Well, I'd buy a messiah, but I don't feel like paying $90 for it. First, I don't even have a DVD burner... yet. I mainly want the chip to play PSX backups cause, bluntly, most of the PS2 games out right now SUCK $*%#.

dust2dust 19-06-2002 12:55

lol ps2 games 2 times as good as ps1
go sell your ps2
buy psone plus chip fitted for £80
:o

ryan0123 19-06-2002 13:42

I bought my ps2 for four games
FFX
GTA 3
MGS 2
State of Emergency
most of the other games really blow. I like psx because it's got a huge variety of awesome rpg's that I never got to play (didn't ever own a psx.) I almost bought a psone, but I thought, aw, what the heck, there's some cool games on ps2, so it bought it, and those four games. Other than that, ps2 has a bunch of crap on it.

_GAMECUBE RULES THE WORLD_

Now, how many _really_ awesome PS2 games can you name that are scheduled to come out this year? Good. Now let's look at gamecube. I'm not gonna do it right now, but I can name so many, it's not even funny.

:D :D :D :D

FFX is already out in the states.
you're going to play the japanese version and thats why you're getting a chip for ffx?

wouldnt it be more worth it for kingdom hearts or something, a game that's not out in the states yet?

ryan0123 20-06-2002 12:40

When did I ever say anything about buying the chip to play a Japanese version of FFX? I know it's already out it the states, _I own it_

The reason I'm buying the chip is to play PSX backups! See, I never owned a PSX, I had a N64 for quite some time, and I enjoyed that, but now I want to play some of those old PSX games that I never got to enjoy, most of them are impossible to find nowadays (i.e. Xenogears.) so the only way to play it is to download it!

PSX backups will NOT direct boot with a no-solder mod, You must use the PSX code disc thats included in the GS2

Hey, can anyone confirm warlock on this one? I believe him, but I've also had two people tell me the opposite.

Miyuki 25-06-2002 10:42

so you're going to chip your ps2?

Miyuki 25-06-2002 10:43

I got mine chipped this year too....i dont know which is the best chip around though.

As I've come to understand it, only the Messiah chips can boot without a GS2/AR2 disc and a swap method of some sort. Supposedly, you can basically rip any CD based PSX/PS2 game with a good clone utility (CDRWIN or CLONECD) with supported CDRW Drives (RAW DAO and SubChannel reading, among other features must be supported). Some games may need patching because of encryption (less likely with CloneCD) or anti-mod chip detection schemes. The Messiahs can basically "cold boot" just about anything, the other mods require GS2 "cold booting" and at least one swap for nearly every backup. The trick to the DVD-R ripping is dependent on the quality of the media the disc is ripped to-- i.e. the cheaper $5 Generic DVD-R at Circuit City may not work, but the $9 name brands will. The same consideration should be given to the CDR media as well--you need high reflectivity. You also need a slow burn as well--over 4X may fail miserably with cheaper media, best to read and rip at 1x or 2x.

I highly reccomend getting CloneCD--I can rip PS2 CD games straight off and swap them with no problem. If you have separate reader and writer drives, you can set it to copy image to hard drive first, or copy on the fly (burn-proof drive required), load the media, click a few buttons and walk away. Unfortunately, it seems you will need a mod chip and the LATEST GS2 to run the PSX games and DVD-R rips--UNLESS you get the MESSIAH. 23 wires to hook it up, not for the novice, but the no wire and 3 wire solutions may suffice so long as you don't mind the extra steps to get them running.

One thing I would suggest, to help save your system--buy PSX titles from Electronics Boutique. They carry just about every title as "previously owned dirt cheap". Got a mint copy of FF7 for 12.99 locally--with instructions, seen FF8 and FF9 for 14.99 as well. They have a website also (ebworld.com) if you don't have a local store. Also, Wal-Mart has started carrying the classic PSX games for $15-$20 NEW. Video stores are also selling them dirt cheap, with a short term guaranty of 5 to 10 days. Nabbed Spongebob for my daughter for $7.99 at Hollywood Video. The Messiah's can hit you for up to $100 with shipping, the other GOOD chips around $30, and you will void warranty once the box is opened--just a thought.

Good Luck!
