would DVD-R games damage v3 PAL PS2 Laser?
my pal PS2 is early model 30002 PAL machine,
if i play the DVD-R games would it damage the laser and wear it out later? and i heard ps2 30002 PAL have weak laser, is this true?? |
what mod have you got in your PAL v3 ?
|
i have neo2 at the moment.. please help
|
your neo2 chip will damage the laser in time
not sure about the dvd-r's, someone techy like charlie or arakon can no doubt answer that for you... |
DVD-Rs won't damage your laser if they are expensive branded DVD-Rs.
Let me explain. The DVD spec says reflectivity of the DVD must be in the range 45% to 65%. Typically DVD-Rs have reflectivity in the range 15% to 40% - rather lower. So if the DVD-R is poorly burned, then the laser will have to work harder on re-reads. Now that doesn't amount to a serious overload unless you play DVD-Rs all day. My advice is at your risk, of course. |
charlie - could toongaz remove his neo chip and replace it with a messiah without causing any problems to his machine (PAL v3)? I remember you saying something about this in the past, something to do with how much damage the chip has done to the laser.
Just a suggestion for toongaz... |
Paul, in a word, YES.
|
thanks for the reply,
i better get a new PS2 "R" model and get messiah modded.. :( until that time.. i probabliy have to stick with CD-R games :( no money to buy new PS2... :( long long time :( lucky i havent played any DVD-R game on my PS2 yet.. |
Hey charlie, what brand of dvdr's would you recommend using that would be in the ideal range and how expensive are they? Thanks

Mitsui DVD-Rs have a reflectivity of 50% and cost more than double that. The spec says that reflectivity should lie in the range 45% to 85%. DVD-Rs below 45% will present problems to the PS2 laser if it is slightly / rather weak. |

My modchip shop tells me their chips don't harm the laser , take a look see under heading "MODCHIPS">
http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/labworld/mod2/index2.html Their "Premium" chip is a neo 2.2 , "Godzilla" is a starchip and not sure what their "Detonator" is (Messiah maybe?) . Says about thier chiptypes in their old site under heading "Products&Prices"> http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/labworld/index2.html I want to play backup dvd-r's too toongaz but I will spew if a new console is neccessary:mad: |
Their site is plain wrong. The NEO4 is not a true non-swap solution.
They've got the point about VCDs wrong - there's no software to play them! If you go for anything, take the Messiah - it's the only one guaranteed to do the job without harming your PS2. I hope they know how to install. Get references. Look up JD13 (or JD14) on this forum and ask him if he used these people. |
Thanks charlie_ps2 ;) Time for an upgrade . A new ps2 and a messiah modchip coming my way :D
|
I just found out the place that they do messiah on my V3 PS2
they say they put messiah on that PS2 a lot and works fine! :) |
I ended up ringing that modchip shop that I refer to above and they say:rolleyes:that they would have to upgrade my old version PS2 before they could fit the Messiah , so rather than do that I thought I would just sell my old PS2 and upgrade with a new version PS2 . I do feel my old PS2 works 100% but it is getting on a bit . I bought my PS2 8mths after they were released here in Australia . It is a version 2 (I think?)>
Sony Playstation 2 PAL Model No. > SCPH-30002 Serial No. > A0355978 I only just put the chip in less than 2 months ago but found I really want a chip that ya can just throw in ya cd-r or dvd-r backups and play without a boot disk or swap . So I feel my best option here is to buy a new PS2 and chip with Messiah . I do take peoples thoughts here seriously so any thoughts will be well noted ;) |
This has to be your call. We've chipped quite a few V3s (that's what you've got if there are 10 screws on the bottom including the rubber pads) - otherwise it's a v4.
In all the v3s we've had to recalibrate the laser and in one case replace it. On the other hand, if you can afford it and can get a v5.x, then you will have a much better PS2 for the Messiah because that version is the best yet. Did you contact JD13 or JD14 (he uses different names on different forums)? |
Can easily sell my old one so i will grab a new one , but If I grab a new one straight off the shelf , could it possilbly be a PAL version 6 or higher and if so will that matter ? Also How do ya tell what version is inside the box without ripping the console out of the pakage? I did go to PM JD13 about this subject but my PM's have been blocked by admin:(
|
Sorry you can't contact JD13. Perhaps try JD14 from www.hel-forums.com!
Anyway, look on the outside of the box you might buy. If it says 30002R then you're fine. If it says 39002 then you've got a problem until Messiah is cracked for this model. You might have to try more than one store - if there is such a thing in WA. JD lives 250 miles from the nearest store! |
Just rang the sales person I intend on buying my new PS2 from and I got her to check on the box she said its Model no. is 30002 but said there was no R written beside it on the box  She said they were the latest model out so I am sure the console will have Model No.30002-R but will have my friend who is picking it up for me tommorrow open the box and check before he walks out with it;) New Playstation 2 PAL costs AU$394 thanks to another price drop since X-box and Gamecube were released in Australia . Gotta love that:D
|
hey, the place i found, they do messiah for $250 AUD,
they said 30002 with no R the old PAL PS2 works fine with messiah, they do put messiah on those and plays DVD-R games with no problems theres no reason to buy another PS2 if the old one works fine |
Charlie, you said you have put messiah in quite few V3 PS2s,
well, did they work ok? did of em had side effect after calibrating the laser? and when you calibrate laser, is it really hard and complicated? how about DVD-R games? did they work without freezing? |
