Wizardry 8, what's with the cracks

It seems there's been a lot of confusion over the Wizardry 8 update patches and the associated cracks. Apparently I helped create some of that confusion, so I'll try and set the record straight. The v1.22 wiz8.exe no-cd is for the Sirtech 12/12 patch; NOT for the latest 12/23 patch which, I'm told, uses wiz8.exe v1.23. Thanks for setting me straight IXB!
For some reason, I had thought both the 12/12 & 12/23 Sirtech patches had used the same v1.22 wiz8.exe file. This is NOT the case. Apparently, the v1.22 wiz8.exe no-cd will *partially* work with the 12/23 Sirtech patch, but fails if you try to load a v1.23-specific save game. Ouch! A real 12/23 (wiz8.exe v1.23) no-cd will have to wait until I get hold of an unwrapped (un-Safedisc'ed) wiz8.exe v1.23 or an unwrapper that can handle Safedisc 2.51.

HunterZ 10-01-2002 20:17

Thanks for clearing that up! We're all looking forward to the 12_23 nocd... So do you usually go off of the Fairlight release, which seems to be an unsafedisc'd version but not a nocd?

ckb 11-01-2002 23:05

I'm going to bump this, for a few reasons.

1. The GCW page for wizardry 8 still lists the Softbeard (and v1.2.2 Farlight releases) as working with the 12_23 patch. They really do not. There's even a special note addressing it saying it works.

While the game still runs with the 12_23 patch and the old EXE, you are not running the v1.2.4 executable. The version is visible in the upper right corner of the main game splash screen.

I have verified that the bug which was the main reason for the release (toxic cloud overpowered) is not fixed when using the v1.2.2 executable with the 12_23 patch. Firsthand. Still Broke.

I have also verified that the version of the WIZ8.EXE shipped with the two Sirtech patches differ SIGNIFICANTLY, even though their size is exactly the same.

Thanks for the hard work, also waiting for the v1.2.4 EXE.

I know SIRTECH supoort is giving out un-safedisc'd EXEs to people who are having trouble with the copy protection. But I do no have one.

Please update the GCW Wiz 8 page! :-)

HunterZ 12-01-2002 15:12

Bump.

Also, I heard over a week ago that Fairlight had released an unsafedisc'd 1.2.4 EXE. Either the distro networks are stupid, or someone at GCW is lazy :(

SoftBeard 13-01-2002 14:26

If anyone can get the unsafedisc'ed v1.24 wiz8.exe ('fixed' exe) please post it or contact me.
BTW: all references to v1.23 wiz8.exe in my original post, should be v1.24. DOH!

Actually, I can find no mention of a Farlight 1.2.4 release of an EXE at isonews.com. (I hope you are right, though!) The 1.2.2 release is there.

They usually get everything. Do you have an .nfo from the release?
Am I just missing it on isonews?

ckb 13-01-2002 21:04

OK, I know when to smack myself across the face.

Farlight did release a cracked exe for 1.2.4. Here is the .nfo. Found it on isonews. So, HunterZ is right. No one has bothered to give it to GCW.

Please, if you have the following Farlight release, send it to GCW!

Unzip files to game dir (it includes patched exe)

Why call it patch 2?:
=====================
Well many places are calling this patch different things, the W8 site
####://www.wizardry8.com/index2.html, is calling it
Wiz8Patch2001_12_23_release, other sites are calling it 1.24, 1.12.23.
We decided to simply release it as patch 2!

Whats in this anyway?
=====================
This patch includes all of the changes which appeared in the 12_12 patch,
and: Corrected duration and poison damage done by Toxic Cloud spells
(effects are no longer permanent!) Corrected bug which reported a bad
monster ID assertion on line 203. Drink type items now deplete upon use
(fixes Ales, Brew) Autosaving will not occur unless this option is ON.

Bump.

Bulberfot 15-01-2002 01:04

I've got the latest patch cracked by Fairlight, version 1.24 without safedisc. I have sent it to the GCW staff today, so lets see how long it takes them to get it out.
Softbeard, do you want me to send you the cracked exe? If so, contact me with a way to get it to you, your hotmail just bounce...

The v1.2.4 patch (Farlight) has appeared on GCW and the Wiz8 page has been updated.

What more can a old hacker from Jersey ask for? :-)

I'm sure it took the efforts of multiple people for this to happen so quickly. Thanks again.

Werewolves 15-01-2002 18:11

GREAT!!

drakken_k 17-01-2002 13:11

I don't what's going on with the fixed exe on my machine but once I use patched exe the game texts are completely messed up !
The inventory is unusable, item description utter fantasy...
Do you have this pb ? Only the crack for V1 seems to work properly on my system.
Ho, by the way, I'm running WinXP pro, this might be the cause.

SoftBeard 18-01-2002 14:09

I'm running Wiz8 on WinXP and there are no problems. The v1.24 fixed wiz.exe and no-cd both appear 100% (naturally). Check your game installation and make sure you unarchived the 12/23 game patch with all its subdirectories correctly.

I'm pretty sure I did it properly, nevertheless I'll give it a second look. Maybe I forgot something

i read it, it says asking for crack is garbage, but i see lots of topics titled with "crack" even more i found out this site writing x game + crack in google, did you know this ?

Even even more, lots of share done i see before my post, so if it is not legit, why keeping them alive still ?

Cowsheep 22-06-2010 04:14

Upload the files needed to see the "Insert disc" message.

Not weird: GCW has multiple mirrors. And you haven't offended anyone but get used to reading FAQ's before asking - after all, that's exactly what FAQ's are for.

Richardf269 09-09-2011 20:56

I know that this thread is old as dirt, but I needed to post in here my problem.

I have just recently acquired this game, Wizardry 8. I have tried the "no cd-crack" for 1.0. It doesn't work. It says it cracked the file, but it still asks for the stupid cd in the drive. I have tried patching it to 1.2.4, and also the 1.2.4 cd-crack, and it STILL doesn't work! What the hell is wrong with it?! I really, really do not like the type of cracks where I have to "press any key" to crack a file for a game. I much prefer the cracked .exe file.

I have a Dual-Boot Windows XP Pro, and Windows 7 Ultimate (both are 32Bit).

Joe Forster/STA 10-09-2011 03:44

Try it with a copy (burned CD/CD-RW or, preferably, mounted CD image) of the original: the crack may only remove the necessity to insert the original CD into a/the CD driver.

Richardf269 10-09-2011 08:30

I've already tried mounting an image of it. Still won't launch the game.

I presume the game does 'play' when using the original disc?

Richardf269 10-09-2011 09:10

Nope. Disc's too scratched up over the years I've owned it. I created the image file a few years ago when I first grabbed the game. But I've never really played it because I honestly forgot I owned it up until now. It was sittin' on my floor for a good while, so it's no good to use, and I'm not able to get another one.

Joe Forster/STA 10-09-2011 09:18

Uhm, the forum rules clearly state: no original -> no support here.

Richardf269 10-09-2011 09:20

I own the original. I just said it was too scratched to use it. From your "short" description, "owning" it versus being "usable" are 2 different definitions.

Edit: Guess your rules are full of shit then. It says I can get help if I own the original, but not if it's unusable? What kind of contradictory bullshit is this? Your rules are messed up. I'm not buying another cd just to play the game when I already bought it.

Also, you should fix the "no cd-crack" for Wizardry 8, since it obviously doesn't work. It's supposed to take away the cd-check (which means no image of said game, or having to put in the cd), which the crack for this game doesn't even do in the first place. I suggest finding a replacement.

TippeX 10-09-2011 11:13

Try reading the rules...if the disk is warped, scratched etc read the faq, if all fails then contact the publisher for a replacment...

Try and be a bit more civil too...if you dont like the rules or how the forum is run, feel free to leave
as for fixing the crack..if you had a brain, used it and perhaps searched a bit on the forum you would see that gcw hosts the cracks...yes HOST not MAKE, can you actually crack? guessing not cos you are looking for a crack for a game... Try using a little humility..i would have helped (i can crack), but given your attitude you can forget any help i normally would have offered

oh and owning and usable ARE two seperate words with different meanings, and if you want to be a pedantic prick, you dont own the game, you purchase a license to use it...

One last thing..blind guess..american right?

Your rules are contradictory (and absolutely full of shit) for these specified reasons:

I own the original cd, yet it is too scratched up to be usable, yet it's considered a "ware" because it's scratched? The cd's too scratched up to even read in the cd-rom, yet I still own the original. It doesn't matter if it's usable or not, I still own it. (and I mean "own", as in it's in my posession, not someone elses.) Therefore, your rules are bullshit at worst, and hypocritical at best.

I'm not buying a second copy of a game just because it's unusable and I have a cd-image that installs the game just fine (and no, I sure as hell am not going to prove to you I own the damn cd just because you think I'm pirating it).

I never said that gcw made the crack. I said the cd-crack isn't working. It needs to be replaced with a cd-crack that works. CD-cracks are made as a work-around the cd-check, and therefore the cd isn't needed to run the game. The crack for Wizardry 8 obviously isn't working. Neither for 1.0 or 1.2.4. I've tried both. This is the only game that I've cracked within the last 3 or 4 years that hasn't had any problems working.

And 3rdly, I don't have any money to replace the cd from the company who made the cd. Even if I did, I still wouldn't in the first place, they'd just make me pay for it. I only pay for a CD ONCE, not more, and if the companies don't like it, then they can get lost. They're around to make money off of the people who want the game, not for themselves. EA Games and Blizzard Entertainment are the perfect examples of this, by the way (seeing as they've both turned into a well used toilet that hasn't been flushed in 5 years).

Yes, I'm American, and if I lived in the Netherlands for instance, the government, from what I've been told, doesn't give 2 shits about the internet all that much, but since the U.S is so full of corrupt idiots, I have to crack most of my games because I refuse to put my stupid cd into my drive for every game I own. So I honestly don't give a shit about "rules" on a website. And if the place has a problem with it, then GCW shouldn't even exist in the first place, seeing as how in "America", cd-cracks are illegal.

Edit: I finally managed to get it to work. Had someone else just give me a cracked .exe that works. Bye now.

Grumpy 11-09-2011 01:00

Lets get a few things straight ....

You have never 'owned' the disc, you have owned the license to play the game using the 'original' disc.
(Ever read an EULA?)

You have not 'cracked' anything, you have only swapped a file. People like 'Tippex' actually make cracks, or know how to crack files. But as far as I am aware Tippex did not make the cracks for this game.

Quote:

in "America", cd-cracks are illegal
... then maybe you shouldn't be here looking for cracks. :)

It always makes me laugh when I hear people say they dont have money for this and that yet they own a PC and can afford an Internet connection.

Going on to a public forum ranting and abusing people will in most cases get you no-where.
There are many people here who would have been willing to help you with your problem, people like Tippex who has the knowledge and expertise to crack files. But when they see the attitude you display why would they give their time, which they are not paid for, to help you?

Quote:

and if the companies don't like it, then they can get lost.
Same applies with our rules, if you dont like them then heed your own advice.

I'm glad you finally managed to 'crack the game yourself'. Lets just hope you learnt something from your experiences. ;)

You are an idiot. You come to a forum, ask for help, get a gentle (!) reminder about the forum rules and, simply because you don't like the rules, you start throwing shit at everyone you come across. This proves that you didn't give a shit about the forum in the first place, all your "contribution" to it was demanding a solution for your problem. People who are not willing to give, only get, are not welcome on any forum, they're only tolerated if they show, at least, some kind of respect to other forum members, e.g. the ones who help him. But downright disrespect against the forum itself won't get you very far, to put it mildly.

As for the hypocrisy accusation, you clearly have absolutely no idea about the evolution of our rules and I'm not going to explain it to you because you - see above - wouldn't be interested anyway. By the way, if you had looked at our "Location", you might have realized that we, moderators, are not (all) U.S. citizens - actually, far away from that country which, I agree, is full of corrupt idiots.

So, now away with you. I'm not vindictive - life is too short to clash with people and spend your time hating them - so, in case you understand that you were wrong about this, send me an E-mail and I'll reactive your account as well as delete these posts so you can start again from scratch.
