Modded PS2 controller lockout?!?
OK, I have searched high and low for an answer, and will finally post and see what turns up. I have a version 3 PS2 (I beleive) with a Mesiah 2 modchip installed. Here's the strangeness- there are some games, seems mostly EA games, but not all, will boot up fine(originals or backups, doesn't matter), but the controller gets "locked" so you can't press start to play the game- the game intro will ofcourse just play over and over again. I just had NFS Underground 2 do this to me today. Goldeneye and Killswitch did this to me also. My initial guess was that there is some code on the ps2 disc that can basically see that a modchip is in my system, and "locks out" the controller making the game unplayable. Anyone ever here of this? I have tried switching controllers, plugging them in and out during bootup, unplugging them altogether, to no avail. I hope there is an answer somewhere, because this is driving me nuts. Please dont respond with "get such and such modchip instead". This has only happened on a handful of games- bitch of it is, you never know which ones will do this. Installing the modchip was absolutely no fun, although I did it successfully the first time. There were probably around 40 some wires and a number of them had to be soldered to miniscule solder points. So, bottom line, nothing is wrong with the install. Thanks

well this will fix it....... get such and such modchip instead
Sorry just couldnt resist. Quote:
Good luck, hope you find the problem with the install/PS2 |
Well, if you think it's a faulty install, how do you explain all the other games that work flawlessly? If I were to test 20 games, 3 out of the 20 probably wouldn't work, but the rest would. I have been modding for years and am quite sure the job isn't faulty. I guess I could open it up and check connections, but it still doesn't make sense.

Did you just do the install or has it been modded for awhile and developed this problem afterwards? It sounds like a slight solder bridge somewhere.
|
hmm EA games, sounds familiar, Lol..
Is it certain games, like say THUG2 works, NFSU2 never works, etc. |
Well, I don't have THUG2, but NFSU2 definitly doesn't work. Goldeneye and Killswitch didn't work either. I modded it about a year or so ago, maybe longer. I don't play a whole lot of ps2, so never noticed a problem until Killswitch came out and I bought it. Fired it up and got the controller lockout. This was the first time I noticed anything like this. Not every EA game doesn't work- the other Bond games work just fine. I just duped the newest Legends of Wrestling, and that worked fine, so I don't know. Iknow I don't have a pinched controller cable or anything, because I just recently installed the ps2 guts into one of those clear cases. By solder bridge, you mean when solder basically makes contact with the pin next it that you didn't intend to have soldered right?

hmm well it might be that a conection is coming loose, so check all your soldering.
But wait till LUFC Fan comes online as he is using the same chip, cus it might be a new form of protection but I doubt it. Disable the mod and play orginal see if that works. |
I have a messiah 2 and all the above games and have no probs here all play perfectly
|
go over your install. Try the games with the chip off aswell
|
Yeah, those games are fine...

I've had a sort of similar problem with the xbox.. it happens for different games at different times.. You'll have to go through the entire intro before you can start the game. A reset fixes it for me or a couple resets.
You should probably at least open your ps2 and take a very good look a good look at the board for any small mistakes.. and check the vias. |
Are you using original PS2 controllers? I have a couple of games that do the same thing that you're seeing if I use PSone controllers.

Yeh thats a good idea, test them theories out first. If no luck.. Its your install.

I use Sony controllers, so that's not it. I have also tried resets with no luck. I have also tried the originals from the backups and am still getting the same controller lockout issue. I also started the system in "no-modchip mode", with no change in issues. Seems like I am going to have to check the install. You know, if this controller issue happened with everygame, it be a no brainer, but when it happens to only a few games, that's real odd. That's the million dollar question- why only a few certain games do this.
