Here is my solution.
1) Use patch (taken from the Carbon hack) from this link:

2) Use mds I posted on rapidshare.de

3) If it asks for a cd-key use that linked to:

I keep getting "unable to mount image" using deamon tools and pointing it at the MDS file, why, whats going on?

You must create an mdf of your cd and then use the mds posted by me with the same name of the mdf you created. When you use Alcohol, create MDF without any setting. No DPM, No Error Skip, No Subchannel Data.

Try it.

Okay, followed your instructions everythings okay untill I get to the running cossacks 2, then I get a "program not responing" error from the protection program.

You should wait one minute or two max.

I waited until my tea went cold but the protection program had crashed, I tried a few times with same result, looks like a dead end. Thanks for your help.

Okay. This is my tutorial

1) Install Cossacks2 and when installation is completed launch game and reboot (if you don't have any other StarForce game installed)

2) Unpack zip patch wich includes the StarForce3 removal tool (sfdrvrem), the update driver tool (sfdrvup) and the patch exe file.

3) Now run sfdrvrem.exe but don't reboot your pc

4) run sfdrvup.exe and an error message will appear. Don't worry it's normal.

5) Now run sfdrvpatch.exe and locate sfdrv01.sys file in c:\windows\system32\drivers and patch it.

6) Now reboot your pc and run Cossacks2 desktop link for the game.
The application will tell you, you need another reboot. Don't worry and reboot again.

7) Now use StarForce Nightmare 1.12 and disable CD (I have SATA HD so I disabled CH1, CH2, ATA and CD) and click on "Disable Node".

8) At last mount Cossacks2 cd2 using my mds (naming it with the same label of CD2's MDF)

9) Run game, and if it doesn't work, insert serial number provided in the link on rapidshare.de posted few pages back.

10) Wait for StarForce3 checking protection and play.

I can prove it works flawlessly, but I must tell you my version is only italian localized.

It could work with a mini-image I think :s

Yer what I think here is incompatibility between the MDS and MDF files, thus the "not responding".
