LOL, I didn't really notice to many bugs and to be honest the Single player mode was not my favorite. But When it came to onlining.... whoa! Serious business.

Champ manager series from the amiga days to present. I blame my bunking off school on this. Might consider a law suit against them!! (only kidding) They have given me too much pleasure for me to do that.

I think the best AI was in Black and White, which degraded into potty training
There were bots for quake1 (omicron:D) that had very advanced learning AI PS: is this a 3 month old thread? |
in deed it is rofl

I can't believe you guys left out Quake 1. Quake 1, ie classic quake, had a HUGE impact on the pc world. Where would COUNTERSTRIKE, Day of defeat, and every other mod be without quake starting the mod revolution? The console!! what game these days doesn't have a console! since when could you completely redesign a game and make a flight sim, an rts, or a racing game-- which the developer actualy supported doing?
Not to mention Quake being the first game to incorporate a fully three dimensional environment, unlike doom and duke3d where you couldn't actualy look up and down without it being distorted, or actualy have a level with multiple floors. And quake first started using polygons instead of sprites for models. And how about internet play? all games before quake used IPX, which is only for LAN play, unless you wanted to buy kali. Quake really set the standard for playing through TCP/IP, and was the first fps game to actualy have big turnaments played on, and "professional gamers" how silly it might be. I don't doubt that there are other games worth noting, but you HAVE to give quake credit! It was such a big milestone!! And I also have to give tons of credit to blizzard. The warcraft(I donno if warcraft was before c&c) series and Diablo really boomed two different types of games, and that's freaken innovative! |
Dune 2 is the first RTS ... by westwood..
Blizzard was next with warcraft.. which added "groups" and a bunch of other stuff.. (yeah u couldnt select 2 units in dune2 AFAIK .. i remember lining up my units in a huge line and then clicking each one .. pressing M and then clicking somewhere on the map so that the lined moved .. one by one) C&C came after by westwood.. for the sole reason that the Dune license was limited to 2 games.. (C&C is basically dune3) then starcraft .. again by blizzard ... I'm not mentioning sequels because i really dont remember when warcraft 2 and stuff came out.. but yeah .. quake1 was huge.. i was big into console manipulation and making mods with quakec... maps that had "brushes" just because quake didnt have concave 3D objects.. (you had to break it down to convex objects called "brushes") We just played medal of honor multiplayer and i used my console skills there too :) edit: I should have said dune2 was my first RTS :) |
efess, although ur right about quake being the first full 3d game, doom 2 and duke 3d did have several floors in one level...
and also ipx wanst the only online mode, you could dial directly into someone elses modem phone. tbaher, yes the first rts was dune, and then warcraft, but what really shooted rts skyhigh was c&c :) |
I think the most significant RTS is StarCraft. Why? Becouse StarCraft made the second revolution in the RTS genre, and nobody made game ever since that can beat it. They play it on WCG! There are so many RTSs around, and they play StarCraft on WCG. I think that's a game worthy of significance.
I think Warcraft 3 f*cked the whole genre for implementing heroes in the gameplay. Apparently you could beat the missions without strategy, if you had a strong hero. A strategy game without strategy. And the gaming industry just kept releasing games like this named RTS. Discusting.... :( And Doom, yeah, that was a great game. I remember playing it with friend in hot-seat mode :D for days. But the all-time favorite is Duke Nukem 3D!!! :D Nothing is comperable to "Hail to the king, baby!" :D |

There was an amiga game that was first with RTS's forgot its name now :P |
Im suprised no-one voted for elite, it was a phenomenal game. Huge game and was the first true space flight sim.
But then again I think most people arent old enough to remember it lol |

I still think you left StarCraft from that list... |
freelancer is definetly a worthy succesor to elite even if they have no relation, and dab, that mightve been strategy, (turn based) but the technology for REAL time strategy was non existant b4 dune2
