Most software CD-protections make use of Microsh*t Windows bugs. This dates back to quite some time ago, with the advent of some types of C2 read errors.

Which is why many turn to Linux for backing up CDs, esp. protected ones. Much less risk of getting coasters, they say..

Only 2 of the four aspi files are needed if you are installing on a win2K or XP system. Thats why you have 2 files which seem out of date but actually you are on the latest version.
ASPI 4.6 is the best version to use for burning as 4.7 is quite unstable and causes more problems than it solves.
Try Compel ASPI. Works great but i cant attach it here

From what I heard - ASPi 4.6 is best for Windows95, but not for Windows 2K and XP...
I am not sure, I do not know what KIND of problem ASPI can cause...
All I know is that 4.7 alpha 2 did not cause any problems and I managed to get a good working copy of NWN: SoU!

Linux looks real good these days, but I'm a gamer :D .

Anyways, ASPI 4.6 is not intended for win95, true enough, but that's in theory. The facts say otherwise, indeed many claim to have had their reading/burning issues solved when reverting back to v4.6 even on recent OS platforms. Personnally, never read of a bug occuring with v4.6 that didn't arise with v4.7x too. And don't forget, ASPI is not the only source of burning problems, other parts of the OS can also be the cause, CD software bugs, etc, in fact there are parameters aplenty, it's a cruel world out there.. :(

Especially when you are so eager to burn a new game, and you got 4 hours of homework...

BTW, I'm doing my English presentation on CD protections (gonna confuse the hell out of my teacher and students)

Ain't no real articles on CD protections as such. However U could try 'cdmediaworld.com', they've got a section which deals with the topic, to some LIMITED extent: protection manufacturers, their country of origin, a brief outline of how some work, etc...

Otherwise, nothing beats good ole' "type keywords in search motor" method :p
