I think 40k per year is pretty plausible. Since housing costs 16k and food costs some thousands. That is pretty good salary, so why are so many people complaining about the American Economy?

Because that money is contrasted by loans on the magnitude of billion (for US people: trillion) US dollars. The USA, its citizens and its economy are living on top of the shifting sand of debt, half of which is already in the hands of China who's not necessarily friendly to the USA by principle.
