Is there a tool available which automatically removes/disables all unnecessary services & tools to run a Windows XP SP3 + IE7 + Office 2007 on 256MB of ram. Currently there is only about 40MB free mem ;)

I know about nLite and stuff but want to apply this to a regular/default CD installation without doing every tweak by hand

Adding memory is no option (al least for this system)

How about XPLite (http://www.litepc.com) instead then? If I understand correctly, you want to remove components from an already installed system rather than remove components from the installation package (as nLite does) - yes, that's what XPLite does.

The olde no background pic, minimal visual settings etc will free up RAM.

You could also sift through the things that XP loads by using msconfig :P

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but this can be achieved easily via a .reg file (plus a restart for the service changes to take effect). Attached is an example taken from eXPerience's minimalist Windows setups which should provide a useful starting point (after decompressing, rename it from .txt to .reg).

Ehm, can you quote the URL of the page you got this from? I LOVE tweaking stuff! ;)
