Hi there,

I'm hoping there is a basic answer to this issue that i've missed.
I have just built a new pc using a 3GHZ core2duo cpu, 8800GT etc etc.
However, Since this build any game .exe i try to paste over or delete is always locked. I get the dialogue box for this file is in use and even using programs to delete files before windows start up have no effect.

I can't replace any exe's so that i can use my games without the cd's and it's getting very frustrating. Strangely every once in a while [maybe 1 out of 50] it does delete the file when asked so i can use a crack.
Please help, i'm thinking it may be based around the features of the cpu and there is something i've not disabled correctly. Any input is greatly received.:)

(Wrong forum, moved.)

The reason is probably you not using a user account with administrator privileges or your virus scanner being too nosy.

I'm using XP SP2 Home. It's running under admin. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try to rename, overwrite, delete those EXE's manually, with a decent file manager (FAR Manager, Total Commander etc.).

maybe you have some weird cd/dvd filter running, which is keeping the file attributes when files are copied.. thus if they come from the cd/dvd they'll be read only.... wild guess, or some crap anti virus program...

Boot into safe mode and try then, if it works then it's something loaded when you boot windows normally and you'll have to go disabling stuff and rebooting until you find it!

Well it's really annoying now so I've deleted the partition to ensure a fresh drive to try again.
Safe mode was my 1st thought but it made no difference and as i said above, any file deletion programme did nothing. I've never experienced this before so it's strange to say the least. Now installing a game to check if it's OK.
