i want to make a backup for my games, so i looked around gcw. then i saw a note saying that StarForce and TAGES protections cannot make backups, but it doesn't explain why or any other ways to create a backup file. could you explain to me why they cannot make a backup and if there's a way to create a backup file?

tages works by duplicate sectors, an image can be made, but its tricky, and alcohol can NOT make a working image currently... virtual cd 8 claims to make tages images, it never worked when i tested it..

starforce CAN be imaged by alcohol, and usually (but not always) requires the unplugging/disabling of cd/dvd drives for it to work.. starforce works by calculating the angles between various sectors, with differing sector density, making up a sort of 'fingerprint'

summary...

starforce can be imaged/backed up by alcohol, burning the image might not work however (as you probably need specific media makes/types), but mounting it (and disabling/disconnecting physical ide drives is usually required) does work usually..

tages can (supposedly) be imaged by virtual cd 8 (and daemon tools pro.. as/when/if it ever appears), but tages images can NOT be burned to a disc, due to the duplicate sectors...

so if you have a link for that note you cited from, please post it, as it needs updated..
