I don't understand the problem... You don't "put" subtitles onto a DivX/XviD movie (in case you mean that the subtitles get burnt into the film - that's laaame!), you have the player software overlay the subtitles over the movie instead.
To achieve this, the player must be able to find the subtitles that belong to the movie. Usually, the subtitles need the have the same base name as the movie and any recognizable extension, e.g. "Movie.avi" and "Movie_ENG.srt", "Movie[jp].sub" or "Movie.noideawhatlanguage.srt" will do - unfortunately, "Movie_2.sub" (a subtitle for the sequel!), too... It depends on the software, though - especially with desktop DVD players - so do some experiments with rewritable CD's/DVD's before burning your movies!

Ehhh... Anyway... Install VobSub, and have the subtitles displayed by its DirectVobSub component and then subtitles will be part of the movie. Now run the DivX/XviD conversion. (Mind you, during each conversion you will lose some of the picture details because MPEG-4 uses lossy compression!)
