I need to use the archived files but the password does'nt seem to work. Anybody know of a good freeware utility to recover my lost password?:(

If you have absolutely no idea about the password then good luck: passwords above about 6-7 characters will take days to find, with brute force, and that time increases exponentially with each additional character, no matter what software you use...!

only method really is brute force, and what joe states is totally accurate, theres some decent cracking programs out there that might do it, but it'll take time..

my third finger is shaking, which is a sign for you know what lol

.. your third finger.. wha...

obviously i know it won't work because it would've been done by now.. by why couldn't the password portion in winrar have been mapped by now..

you know take one file and just keep changing the password and compare hex files with the original un password protected file to find the changes? did I explain that well enough to be understood? I don't know i'm pretty tired..

IF you have (one of) the original file(s), that is! (Do I remember correctly that this is what is called a "plaintext attack"?) I'm sure that, at least, some of the password cracker programs have this option, too.

try it, winrar hashes the password, then uses a hash of this as a key to the cryption, therby making every byte totally different, so you'll never 'see' the password by trying your approach... if it was that simple it'd have been done by now.. i suggest you read up on crypto :)

Hmmm, then plaintext attack is only available for the old (and very outdated!) ZIP format only...

TippeX buddy.. Thanks for the run down.. but uh you can see up there my friend that I figured it wouldn't be possible.. (first part of the post) Appreciate the response though. And maybe i'll look into your suggestion.

well there is one possiblity which would be bruting the hashes
but that'd require a huge database of hashes, it'd be slightly faster
than a brute force attack as the hashes are already made (thus no
generation etc required).. but its pretty tricky

Ehh, I'm not too talented around this stuff (when someone mentions crypto I usually hide under a rock), but couldn't something like rainbow tables work nicely in this case?

It was definately the name of the Primeministers dog (aka Superman) from the movie 'Whoops Acpocalypse'. :D

As far as I know there a are a lot of ways to solve your problem and the easiest one of them is to use program designed to see to such problem!
And I have tried many of them, according to my experience, I recommend you the password recovery bundle which not only can recovery your RAR password but also other files' password.
And I google the address for you. it is http://www.recoverlostpassword.com/products/passwordrecovery.html
Wish you good luck.

I had a trouble with WinRAR in getting my password but glad I was made it.

there is no simple way to get the password, the only way is bruteforcing.. the password is not stored anywhere in the file (if it was it wouldn't be much of a security option would it?).. if the password is correct the crc of the file will match the recorded crc.. if not, then it wont match and winrar will bitch about you entering the wrong password..

like joe says the only real option is to get a rar password cracker and leave it bruteforcing the file(s).. if you know some of the characters you can supply them to speed up the process.. and if you have an nvidia based video card, of the 9xxx series (or higher).. (i think its 9xxx, perhaps 8xxx also work) you can use the cuda option to use the gpu to break the password (which usually is considerably faster than using the cpu)...

oh and @search24sc, i got a damned good felling you're a bot, and i already edited your post to remove your shameless advertising (which is forbidden).. so two things are going to happen..

1. you reply to this thread stating you are not a bot, will read the rules and be good in future....

-or-

2. you don't reply in a reasonable time (i give you ~2 days), i assume you are therefore a bot and kick you out of the forum..

ho ho ho, merry christmas

Don't bother, that's the usual meaningless bullshit from bots. search24sc permbanned. ;)
