Thus He releaseth His first crackfix. And He saw it was good.
I did not come to bring shit, but a crack :D
thanks for making the crack, but when i run it all that happens is a little hourglass appears by my pointer for a bit then nothing, i've replaced the old exe with it, is there anything else i should do?
did you applied the patch 1.1 first?

I installed the patch and then applied your crack. Again, like other users, I got the hourglass and then nothing.
did you applied the patch 1.1 first?
installed the patch yesterday, and i then overwrote the exe with yours and it didn't work, since then i have tried reinstalling the patch and still no joy
is there any dianostic info that would be handy?
this is really weird, it worked. once.
I dont know what changed but it ran the game fine, 1.1 and everything, I played for a bit then restarted the computer now it doesn't work again, i dont have a clue what i had open/closed etc to make it work, but now im very confused!
it definitely tries to run medieval 2, i can see it appear in the processes list, but it dissapears almost instantly, im gonna try and re-create the situation, but i dont have a clue what it was, does anyone else have any ideas?

The exe is not shutting down properly here. The game seems to work fine, but when you exit the game the exe file stays in the process list. Subsequent efforts to start the game are greeted with 'another instance of the program is already running' errors. Each attempt to start the program adds another medieval2.exe process to the process list which all need to be cleared manually.
If you could do another repack to take care of this it would be very much appreciated, as i'm glad you are stepping up to the plate, as the release groups don't seem to bother with patches
Works fine here, XP PRO + SP2. Exits cleanly with no process active, I can launch and exit as many times as I like and it always runs and exits cleanly!
As for the size, compressing it with UPX will get a 6mb file, EXE seems fine compressed as the game seems fine when playing.
right i think i might know whats going on.
maciozo has uploaded two versions, looking at this thread, and i think some places still have the old one, becasue i downloaded maciozo's crack from a different site (dont ask me where can't remember) and it works perfectly
if you don't need to cra*ck the game .... go to Medieval 2 -Total War thread...
there is a very good MAXI image that I hope will work for all versions of the game.

Just double checked again, crack works absolutely fine, but process doesn't end when you exit from the game and it just sits there using 80mb of memory.
Using a fresh install of XP Pro with SP2
Not sure why it doesn't end on your system, maybe you have the notorious M$ update KB917422 installed, this is known to screw some games.

I do have that update installed, will try uninstalling it now

update uninstalled - no effect medieval2.exe still continues to show in the processes box after the game is shut down
The not ending process was common mostly for DirectX errors (sometimes they are unnoticable) or some DLL fuckups. Please try running the game (with update 1.1) without the crack & using the original EXE. Your help will be very valuable here.
Also, please try to update your DirectX to the latest December06 release which can be downloaded here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/c/9/8c968ecc-8402-49f3-aacb-dc4c5d230a9a/directx_dec2006_redist.exe
EDIT: I've cooked a little launcher for you. Save the following text as launcher.bat, put the file inside game's folder & run the game with it. After quiting Medieval II, the process will be killed automatically. I know that is a crappy solution, but it works.
medieval2.exe
taskkill /F /IM medieval2.exe

many thanks for your reply, it is very much appreciated.
Updating directx didn't help i'm afraid.
Switching back to the original .exe means that the game works fine and the process is killed on exit
Using the text above as a .bat file doesn't work either as the process isn't killed when you exit the game

Also, forgot to add that i've also tried the following;
Exited/shutdown AV (NOD32)
Shutdown firewall (XP SP2)
Updated graphics card drivers (now on ATI 6.12)
Underclocked CPU to check for overheating
that's really strange. added "forced kill" switch to the .bat file (see the previous post) i'll put another fixed EXE here with different fixes so you can test it & see if it'll work for you. thanks for your cooperation :)

The thanks are all for you my friend, your hard work is very much appreciated. Will be more than happy to test any exe posted :)
here you go :) the 3rd version of crack. 2 new routines patched, unlinked URLMON.dll & added launcher (with forced process kill). for those that have the previous crack & it's working, this new one is not required

Thanks very much for this, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be any improvement.
If i run it via the .exe the process doesn't close when the game exits. If i run via the bat file the CMD window stays open and the process doesn't close.
Sorry for causing so many problems :(
LOL, you're not causing any problems at all. I hope that some scene group will release a real crack for it. Still, it's a very ironical thing since quite a lot ActiveMARK protected games had quiting problems (those with AM v5.3) when they were... uncracked :D But when I fixed them, all those quitting problems were gone.
Thanks for your help - I'll try to find a solution, but in later time. Cheers :)
EDIT: A small suggestion - try running in different compatibility modes, maybe it will help...

No problem, thank you very much for your time and efforts. I've just checked out the maxi image further down the page and that works absolutely fine (as does the original exe) so it must be something that is altered as a result of the activemark protection that is causing this
[...]
running in compatability mode produces strange results. The first time that you run the exe after selecting one of the compatability modes is works absolutely fine and the process exits when you quit. However, if i run the program a second time the process does not quit when you exit the game. Very weird!
[...]
Similarly, if you make the exe file read only, it works the first time you exit the game, but subsequent tries don't work

Question, how does one uninstall a patch? That is, go from 1.1 back to 1.0, without uninstalling the whole shebang?
If there is no uninstaller in Add/Remove or in the programs shortcuts try running the patch again to see if it has an uninstaller, if not then it's an uninstall and reinstall.
anyone know where to get original medieval2.exe v1.0 w/o noCD
Joe Forster/STA

Obviously, on your original CD/DVD.

I think its impossible without reinstallation.

hmmm i get crashes after an hour or so freeze than crash, might have to reinstall the whole thing nuts o.
Hey duds,
I have a version 1.2 and tried all game fixes available on the net and still not working, always getting "Fatal error system...etc ".
maciozo, the game fix you did for version 1.1 is 54 mb size, so is by any chance you created a one for the version 1.2 which is bigger
size than 18.8 mb.
Your help all duds will be really nice.
Bye

To rudeness, I'll respond pretty much the same.
We do not check the forums just to make sure that you posted something.
Now, why don't you update to v1.3? There is a working crack for that patch. The crack for v1.2 had problems. So you can always update to the latest patch and use the crack for v1.3. It is available at gamecopyworld.
If still have problems, check if you have the latest drivers, the latest directX and such.
Install order if you have the Kingdoms expansion:
1.MTW II
2.Kingdoms(it will also patch MTW2)
3.patch 1.3 for Kingdoms
4.crack for v1.3 for Kingdoms
If you don't have Kingdoms
1.MTW II
2.patch 1.3 for MTW(check dlh.net, gamershell.com or the official game page)
3.crack for MTW v1.3(available at www.gamecopyworld.com)
The working cracks are for v1.0, 1.1 and 1.3 for MTW II and the 1.3 fro MTW II: Kingdoms.
You don't deserve help, but you've still got it.
