Half-Life 2 question

Right, I got to the new game screen and start a new game and then after the level starts i get a error message something like "Connection to steam servers Lost" and i didnt use steam to get Half-Life 2. Does anyone have a idea to fix this?

you cannot legally use half life 2 without steam.
