Get the update what? Get it work? I'm using the no-CD patch for version 1.04; no problems so far although, I admit, I haven't had time to play too much with it...

As I wrote, I'm using the 1.04 no-CD patch... yes, with the 1.06 update. If you're interested in something else, please, elaborate on your word "use"; what exactly do you want: download the update, install the update, crack the update?

You just said that you were using the 1.04 crack, I assumed that you were using the 1.04 update as well. Haven't there been changes to the executable between 1.04 and 1.06?

I think there haven't been significant changes, although the EXE files of 1.04 and 1.06 are not identical. Search around on this forum for similar topics. (I can't install updates because they - very improperly - assume "Program Files" to be present on drive C:, which is a very small drive on my PC. I have to take updates apart and copy the files manually; this seems to work, though...)

i think that the updated files are the .arch00 files!
but the info wich version it is, is stored in the default.archcfg, and all fear.exe files access this file to run fear!!! thats way you could play fear with the 1.05 patch installed and with an old default.archcfg from 1.04 or earlier!! (with the original 1.05 exe of course!!)
Ok I have owned and completed FEAR as new long ago, but fancied playing some parts again on my new GPU but I cant get it to install, now I googled it and read as much as I could find inc the games own forums , but never got fixed, I get same msg as the peeps in these forums but messing about with diff builds of DX etc dont do anything, my PC has been formated a few times since FEAR was new so not sure.
Anyone else got same issue's.

So nobody else has experienced the issues installing FEAR, where you end up having to browse to the .exe on the cd and it then says its "not a win32 application", after googling like mad there is lot of peeps with same problem and some fixed by turning off services etc etc, well I have tried all that is on google and more and still no go.
I aint even sure if any of my installed apps are different than when FEAR was new and I installed no problems, only some hardware changes since then.
i presume you didnt read the rules, so please read them , especially the one about bumping!!!

BTW If only the 1 of 3 peeps I dont like here were as good at helping with questions than they are are jumping in with a with crys "rules" and "warez" comments, we would all have no problems to solve.
I assume they dont have a clue how to fix this issue, nor do I but I bet a format will fix it, but games not worth that esp as completed as new.
well theres always the universal 100% fix...
put the original in the drive, and play...

Tippex, You really are a idiot, I knew for a fact you would have to say something after the Mod spoke.
Where on this page have even said I am using a image or crack, you obv cant read or go and look for results in google like I did, I am trying to install my original dvd of FEAR, I had installed it when new and completed, a few formats ago.
Once I get game installed I will replace the original disc in rom tray with a crack same as I did before.
There is nothing wrong with the disc and others have same issue, now please dont even bother to reply to anything I ask again as your input is off topic and helps nobody (even though I hardly ask for help)

just use the maxi-image from gcw - works fine for vers 1.06 - and yes - it works online. with the cracked exe u can also play online.
and in a few days u can get FEAR multiplayer 4 free on http://www.joinfear.com/us/
wow, pretty interesting there, play multi for free, good idea, hopefully more games will follow the trend (guess it depends on how successful the game is.. ie: if it makes the right amount of money)

Perhaps, this is another proof that it is not the good (or bad or not existing) copy protection that sells a game well but the entertainment value of the game itself?!
The game's single player is the only thing worth buying. I don't like the multiplayer very much, so they might as well give it out for free.

@maciozo: Did you see the newly updated v1.07 patch for F.E.A.R? I just checked it out and it contains an Activemark EXE as expected, however, after dumping and fixing it I can get this one running on my UK game after updating to v1.07 whereas all the other Activemark cracks (1.03, 1.04, 1.06) never worked :)
Been playing this all day today and not had a problem, except one hard lockup just before loading Interval 03 Exeunt Omnes. But I did have 10 folders open and a browser in the background as well as messing about with the detail levels during the game and having it loaded for more than 2 hours :) Loading the game back up and going to the same place was fine, no lockup, and it loaded the next level. Also used the 'maphole' cheat to load each level and they all loaded without a problem.

However, it was dumped and fixed under XP with SP2 installed so it may not work on SP1, not sure how to fix imports so they work on all OS'es :(
errr.. that's how I fixed the dump, except imprec doesn't 'teach' you how to make multiple OS compatible dumps :)
which is why you should stop being a tool monkey and code your own dumper :p

Well, you should at least check 'Renormalize imports' to ensure support on Win98, dunno about the other stuff.
If FirstThunk is right, everything should work fine. To be a bit more sure check 'Rebuild Original FT', so OFTs are availible as well.
I'd never try bound imports which causes more problems than the 'normal' ones...
A new section including a new built IAT is also not a bad idea, if you ask me, I always use it when fixing ASPro or Arma.
When I fix Import Elimination thingie with the "unreadable IAT" with my script, I need that option anyway... :(
@TippeX: I like being a Tool! Not sure about the monkey bit though :) Anyway, it doesn't matter whether you use someone elses tool or one you coded yourself, it's still being a tool monkey :p
I'm not a coder anyway so, it's really difficult to get to grips with this, not seen many tutes and those I have are too technical and assume lots of prior knowledge. I know just how difficult learning this stuff is, and some of it is really scary.
@Muji-FightR: Tried those settings on a Win98/XP target but still no go under Win98, XP still works though. You know somethings wrong because of RestoreLastError popping up but fixing that didn't help, so me knowing something substantial about Kernel API's, PE files and IAT would help :rolleyes:
Well, this isn't a coding topic, so let's just see if anyone else can get that EXE to work on their XP systems!

IAT/Import Table isn't hard whatsoever, kind of weird, but if you take yourself about half an hour of reading, most of it should be clear...
This knowledge isn't always needed, but it can make things way easier...
I already wrote a tutorial about the import section which took me 3 hours to write... well, it's pretty hard to describe all that :D
And you cannot just "learn" Kernel APIs, it's more of getting info on the way, by reading tuts along with some small hint about this API etc., except you're coding...
I always came along w/o coding knowledge, tried my skills at C++. but I'm not good at PHP either, so wtf should I be good at in C++ lol
So far Ollyscript always did the job for me ;)

I like injecting ASM code more, cus you can actually debug it and see what is wrong with it... easier to work with IMO.

Do you have KB917422 installed? If so try uninstalling it from Add/Remove and see if it works then. This update is known to stop some games working!
@Muji-FightR: I have read some info on Import Table, parts make sense but some don't. I also noticed one thing that may be wrong with my dump, image base of the new IAT. Most programs I've looked at have the IAT under 0x00100000 and mine ends up at 0x00490000 (maybe screwing the Win9x compatibility in other dumps?).

only the executable has an image base.. the iat is baseless, what you mean is its va.. and the va of the iat can change, provided the import table itself (the part which gets filled with the va's of all the lovely api's) remains the same.. no fixups required then... if it changes then you have lots of fixups to do for practically every ff 25 / ff 15 in the exe.. fun fun fun

If I understood you right, you can just check 'Create new IAT' in ImpRec, it should patch the Call / Jmp Dwords (ff15/25) to the newly created IAT which resides inside the .mackt section...
Guess with base of IAt he means the beginning...
hmm but theres multiple iat's in the dump...
one from the initial wrapper, and one from the 'virgin' executable,
so changing the ff 15 / ff 25 stuff can be very error prone, unless a 'merged' iat is used, and then you have the dilema of it actually accurately patching a real call/jmp and not fpu code or something similar (easiest way i do for that is check alignment, opcode length, bytes preceeding the ff 15 / ff 25 etc..)
gets very tricky, for some prots :)
@TippeX: I think I meant it's image as in memory, meaning it's address in memory as you've pointed out. There's probably some sections that can be removed, but then it means cleaning up the dump so it still works, which is beyond me.
Sorry it doesn't work for anyone else but me, a consequence of dumping/fixing on my own system I guess :rolleyes:

Cleaning the dump, ie. erasing sections will most likely not help you regarding compatibility ?
In order to (roughly !) determine wheter a section is used in runtime, you can set break on acces in Olly and let it run. If it doesn't break (after say 3 minutes of playing), you can safely erase the section.

BarryB: I don't know if it is important to you, but my game crashing may not be because of your crack. When I tried to run the game without any crack, it still crashed right away. It seems I cannot run the 1.07 patch at all by some reason. 1.06 works fine thou. Btw, I have the UK-version.

1. REVOLVER
They took the 1.0 RELOADED crack and changed 1 byte in the file to
make it say 1.1 on the Main Menu. It is 100% the same crack as RLD
1.0. This means it was *FAKE* and did not contain the 1.2 game code,
nor the fixes listed below in the "Update Info".
Granted they are the friend group of RELOADED, so it does not count as
*stolen*, but nonetheless it is a FAKED, garbage release.
2. CARBON
OMG! Read our June 2006 DOX Report for the full story on this shitty
"clone group" who made nothing but stolen cracks. The report is also
included here as:

They *STOLE* the 1.0 RELOADED crack. They removed the RELOADED text
tags near the beginning of the file, and then changed 1 byte in the
RELOADED crack to make the game report 1.3 on the Main Menu.
This means it was *FAKE* and did not contain the 1.3 game code, nor
any of the fixes listed below in the "Update Info".

This a crack of a commercially protected executable. Since some crackers
and nukers in the scene will instantly wonder what is the deal with our
crack, I will explain it UPFRONT now. ...instead of trying to hide
behind LIES like other groups do.
No, this not a StarForce crack. You already know that we don't invest
weeks or months of time working on one crack. It is just too much time.
So what is it? It is NOT an ActiveMark Trial crack by any means. It is
a FULLY REVERSED cracked of the KOSH Protect anti-piracy product. This
means that the Code Sections (all of the OPCODES and ASSEMBLY CODE of the
executable file) are fully reverse engineered to get back all of the
original game code. The protection is fully removed and not a single
byte of protection code is executed by our crack. It runs exactly as
fast as the original EXE generated by the complier at the developer's PC.
This means that if another group fully reversed the StarForce protected
1.3 executable, it's code section should be 100% the same as ours.
Our crack is *NOT* a foreign language unprotected version of the 1.3
game. The TNT crack is created from an ENGLISH 1.3 protected game
executable.
It is equal to, or EVEN BETTER than, a StarForce crack. If you have

Yes it is true and we know the people who know them. They are a
***PUBLIC GROUP*** who has run public web sites and public file share
systems to freely give out their releases to the public.
Why do they keep changing group NAMES? Because they get banned and
flamed. Changing your name allows you to try to sneak past the bans.
Recently, about 9 or more months ago, someone offered them a ftp site to
PRE at. Because he thought their shit wasn't getting good distribution
since they released on public irc and p2p file shares. So they found
their way onto a real ftp site (not a top site for sure, but still a
site of some sorts). Yet they are still a PUBLIC shit group:
They *DO NOT* know how to crack anything except for that Steam Shit.
They *DO NOT* make valid releases. RAR'ed up files are not allowed in
the ISO GAME section. XXX.ISO cd-roms are *NOT* allowed in the ISO GAME
section. Only .BIN/.CUE is allowed.
Web downloaded games are *NOT* allowed in the ISO GAME section.
The *ISO* GAME section is just that. A section of CD-ROM ISO images
created from RETAIL store-bought CDs/DVDs for you to burn onto blank
media.
You do not get a game from Steam or the Web, install it, and then RAR up
all the files into a big GAME.RAR to release into ISO GAME sections on
sites. It is not allowed. Nor is it allowed to make a faked custom ISO
of your "installed directory" with a custom installer. It is against
the RULES.
Ok, so EMPORiO doesn't realize this because they are web/public newbies.
They found a way to crack some web/steam games and thought, "hey let's
release this stuff for all to enjoy". They don't know the RULES of the
scene. But sure, thanks for trying. We all want some games to play.
But there are RULES in the scene. What they do is definitely NOT ALLOWED!

A) Most of them only run under Win XP. Even though the original
protected EXE ran on Win 98/2000/ME/XP, their cracks only run for XP

C) ALL (yes all, every last fucking one) of the public ActiveMark
tutorials are BAD. That's right, they result in bad cracks.
Trust me, I have had a look at most of them.
Being PUBLIC tutorials, they DO allow you to make a crack that
"usually" functions ON YOUR OWN PC. Meaning you can Reboot and your
crack should still work. It usually will still work if you reinstall
Windows too.
However, being PUBLIC tutorials, they never fully investigated the
protection and unfortunately do NOT produce "Operating System
Independent" cracks. Your cracks created on an XP box will not work
on a Win 98/ME box, and most won't work on a Win 2000 box. Similarly,
a crack created on a Win 98/ME box will NOT work on Win 2000 or XP.
*** That is if you follow those shitty PUBLIC tutorials.
D) Next, those cracks ALSO can crash on any SYSTEM INCLUDING XP, with
"Page Fault" violation errors.
Why? This is basically the same as explained above. The cracks are
setup with HARD-CODED Memory Offset to blocks of memory where the game
will store it's data.
Example:
A game is loaded into Memory at launch (by the Windows KERNEL loader
system). It is tossed into a Memory Block starting at Location
00400000 HEX. And continues for the size of the EXE file. And let us
say that it ends at 00700000 HEX (taking up "300,000 HEX" of memory).
Ok, fine, now the game is wanting to write some temporary data into
memory (maybe to store the path of the where the game is installed or
to store what version of Windows you are running - so it can use that
data later). Windows allocates some memory for it to do that.
Now this memory is somewhere else (not in the ~400,000 to 700,000~
block that the main game is using). Let us say it is set to a far
away place like 20,945,000 HEX. However, those bad ActiveMark cracks
are HARD CODED to write and read from the location of 39,324,400 HEX.
Those cracks merrily try to write to location 39,324,400 in your
memory. Now consider that this block of memory is NOT allocated yet
by Windows or that it is already in-use by some .DLL file or
whatever. What will happen when your shitty crack tries to write to
that location?
The STANDARD thing that always happens! The Windows' protection code
takes over, REALIZING THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO WRITE TO A BAD OR
UNALLOCATED BLOCK OF MEMORY. And what happens? A PAGE FAULT CRASH.
It is called a page fault, because memory is allocated in PAGES. Like
pages of a book. Your crack tried to HARD-CODEDLY write to a bad page
of memory.
And NO NO NO NO NO NO it does not happen on the ORIGINAL PROTECTED
trial executable!!!!!!!!!! Why? Because the protected code SETS UP
the correct memory locations and YOUR FUCKING BAD CRACKS *DO NOT*!
This is EXACTLY why most of those cracks are *unconditionally*
crashing on all Win 98/ME boxes. It can also cause your crack created
on an XP box to crash on other person's XP box based on their XP
service pack, memory usage, total system memory, Windows
configuration, custom KERNEL hacks (for the elite hackers!), etc.
They are totally bad cracks done in amateurish ways through following
shitty PUBLIC TUTORIALS.
E) Those cracks do not run like a RETAIL EXE or like a properly reversed
crack would have. They run SLOWER than RETAIL and they run SLOWER
than TNT's own ActiveMark cracks. And why you ask?
Well good question. We (TNT) have removed much MORE of the protection
code than all of the competing groups. This obviously means less CPU
time spent executing useless protection code and more time for the
actually imbedded GAME CODE to run.
Secondarily, only TNT stops the crappy ActiveMark trial licenses and
trial data files from being created on your Hard Drive. Which BTW
will never be deleted and will infect your PC forever. We also stop
the ActiveMark registry entries for each game from being made.
So what you have is shitty cracks from other groups that do NOT behave
like the store-bought games. They create all sorts of files in your
"Documents and Settings\All Users\XXX\" directories, which the
store-bought games do not (and which the cracked SecuRom/StarForce/
SafeDisc also do NOT create). They make permanent "hard to find"
trial licenses in your Windows Registry as well. They run protection
code at LEAST once every minute to check your trial-time limits.
And most of them are still running in TRIAL MODE, but with half-assed
hacks to stop the TRIAL crack from expiring.

I'm perhaps totally wrong, I probably understand even less of it then you do, you are the one who cracked that thingie :)
But could you redirect the calls and movs (or whatever to these hardcoded adresses outside the main module are referenced by) to an added section inside the module ?
You could attach an empty section and give ActiveMark the protected memory it needs.
Now I'm the one who doesn't understand :confused: you talking some alien language there :)
I followed a tute on how to dump/fix an AM target, nothing in that tute showed you how to fix it so it was OS independant, so basically it works only on the machine it was dumped on. I guess TippeX will chastise me for being a Tute Monkey now :D

Errm... I've had that a while, I thought releasing cracks made from it would be considered lame and not very wise, so that's why I tried doing one myself. Should have kept me mouth shut and done it anyway :)

nah i don´t meant you should use this tool to make activemark cracks.
if you are interested in reversing it you can get hints from the tool to make a 100% working crack. disasm/debug it and you´ll see a way it can be done.

I don't think that source will be made available, unless TNT start a real war and really piss Lz0 off :)
In fact I think that tool should not be discussed due it's primary purpose of removing ActiveMARK, something which can be used for Warez purposes in the wrong hands!

The link to the Detonation crack for 1.07 is wrong, it should be fixed. It points to the old Detonation crack for 1.06

correct.. retired, and artha wasn't that wonderful, most of his tools were shite, and actually screwed other code (his obfuscation remover for example...)

yup it was imhotep, nice idea, horribly flawed code, that destroyed some vital (key) parts of the safedisc code (and as for that icd extractor for sd2.. less said about that the better... useless springs to mind when describing it tho), and nope r!sc is not a froggie :), i think artha was though, so you may be right on that bit...

Just registered and had a look, seems promising, except now every dump I make are not working? Followed the tute I previously followed exactly as before, no working dump anymore so can't see if it works or not now :confused:

Sorted my problem, it seems my 'cracktool was bad configured' :)
Must have screwed some setting up in either LordPE or imprec, deleted and reinstalled them and dumps work again! Found the code referenced in that post you mentioned and applied the 'fix', works on my machine but have to try someone elses machine to test if that fix really does solve the problem!
Well, upload it for testing. It really isn't that hard :)
Don't want to flood the entire interweb with duff cracks now do I :)
