i am having an issue with my ps2 not staying closed. when i turn it on, it immediately opens (at regular speed) and when i press the eject button to close it, it closes only to open right back up again. the discs don't spin and i am not sure if that's because it isn't closed or if i blew something. the eject button is not jammed, the silver ribbon is connected, the disc tray is on track and the lens is clean and i have no idea what the hell to do from here. anyone know why the disc tray would do this??

details about my ps2:

this is an old ps2 that i bought years ago, it is not modded
the model number is scph-30001

any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Judging by the fact the eject mech is playing up and the fact discs aren't spinning i'd say that's the BA chip which has blown.

So, it's either a replacement job done by a pro, or a new motherboard, or a new console - you're choice really my friend :(

yea that's what i thought might be the issue.. but the only thing is that the disc tray never stays closed long enough for the disc to start spinning.. damn the ps2 is a piece of crap.. time for a new i one i guess.:D

Actually mate, I have come across this once before and it was a real simple problem to solve. Someone had sent me in a PS2 to fix and the disc tray was doing as you describe - and it was becase the 2 screws holding the tray in place were too tight. I loosened them by a turn and everything was well with the world again. Try it :)

thanks for the tip, but it was of no use... this thing is driving me nuts because i just can't figure it out why it wouldn't stay closed.. it sounds like it starts to work but doesn't have time to do anything before ejecting.

Weird, You sure the ribbon cable isnt damaged in some way  Ive also seen botched installs cause this.

the ribbon is not pierced or anything, but it does have a couple slight creases and dents in it. the buttons work fine, though.. i actually was just thinking that it may be a ribbon issue since it immediately ejects even if i just turn it on.

try to keep the tray closed with your hand
you will find out if the ps is still loading a disc. or not...

Chances are he may damage the tray and mechanism doing that...
