I am completely exasperated. I bought the game, installed, and it does nothing. The Gothic2.exe sits there in the processes list eating CPU power and memory and does nothing at all. No windows are launched, it doesn't try to check the CD, no errors messages of any kind. I try SR7Stop, same result. I try running it from Anti-Blaxx, same result. I try uninstalling Alchohol and Daemon Tools. Same, fricking, nonresult.

Aspyr/JoWood support is of course, of no help at all. What the hell could be the problem here? Any other things I could try?

I installed Gothic 2 Gold (G2G) and had it work just fine as long as you keep Disc 4 in the drive. I tried making a copy of the CD and using Alcohol as a virtual drive but G2G spit out the image and asked for the CD/DVD.

More annoying is when I use the real CD the "copy protection" takes about 2-3 minutes to run through this "Virtual File System" crap before launching into the game.

I did not try using a virtual drive and hiding the drives. Also, I tried the "Night of the Raven" No-CDs from Megagames but get an error message in German.

PLEASE someone come up with a No-CD solution that doesn't require virtual images - PLEASE!!!!!

I have tried keeping Disc 4 in the drive, but as I said, it doesn't even spin up the CD to check it.

As for returning it, the fact that it's open means an automatic restocking fee, even though it doesn't work

Never heard of such a thing of fee, i mean, why would you ever take it back without opening it? In any case, sounds crap, other option, contact tech support.

It's a fee designed to discourage people buying the game, making a copy, then returning it to the store. Pretty much all software stores in the US have it.

As for tech support, I contacted them, but they just gave a stock answer telling me to uninstall Daemon like software. I'm pretty pissed, but the thing is, no one else I've talked to has even heard of this problem occuring. It seems like I'm the one guy in 100,000 a random piece of software just bluescreens for, for no good reason. I'll probably try imaging the discs, installing/playing from those next.

As I said in the OP, yes, and it didn't change anything.

- PLEASE!!!!!

To avoid the virtual file system crap go the

programfiles\jowood\gothic2\system and rename the fille called vdfs32e.exe in vdfs32e.old and gothic 2 will start without that thing

Also dont forget CloneCD or CloneDVD can cause it to not start. But make sure you system specs meet the requirements for the game and your drivers are uptodate.

I have Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven Addon CD. Installed fine and the version
was v2.7.0. I tested with A-Ray Protection Scanner & 3 files are Protected:
GOTHIC2.EXE : Securom 7.00.00.0004
AR.EXE : Xprot 1.6.3.60
SPACER2.EXE : SVK protection

I downloaded the latest version FixedNocd from GCW, make the Backup files
and OVERWRITE with FixedNocd files version 2.6. Played 10x hours and I
didn't get any problems...
I didn't use/try any of the Mini-Image are on GCW.
Maybe stupid thing to overwrite for the older files but works.
