View Full Version : Another FEAR question...

Don't worry, I'm not looking for a 1.02 no cd crack. Though I was so aggravated that the game insisted I have the CD in the drive that I reinstalled and used the 1.01 patch so that I could use the available no-cd without having to use one of those registry editing programs so that it wouldn't detect Daemon Tools.

Here's my question, and I dearly hope it belongs here.. But now that I'm using an older version, the game asks me if I want to update every time I run it. I know it's a minor thing, but this reminds me so much of STEAM and how much I hated that whole HL2 ordeal . So does anyone know if it's possible to disable this automatic patch check?

Thank you in advance.

If the game managed to find out that there's a new version available then it did that probably by calling home. In this case, you can disable it in your firewall software.

block fear.exe from connecting to the internet or block motd.gamespy.com from being reached.

I figured it was phoning home, which is why it reminded me of Steam. However the window's firewall had never prompted me to unblock it, so I assumed it was blocked. That assumption proved wrong, as it was on the "exceptions" list.

Though after reblocking it, it still prompts me to update. I dunno if it's to late to stop now that it's already checked once...

Edit: It would seem that unchecking the box does not tell windows firewall to stop allowing that program from accessing the internet, in fact all those checkboxes seem to do is tell windows weather or not that box is checked or not. I guess those checkboxes are cosmetic or are there to give you the illution of internet security. However after deleating both FEAR.exe and fpudate.exe from the exceptions list it stopped prompting me to update. It also stoped all the intro movies from playing. 3 birds and one stone! Thank you for the assistance.

Nevertheless you find your solution and peace with this one,
I would still recommend to use a third party firewal.
Not the Microsoft one.

There are many freeware firewalls out there... waiting for
you to download them. Give it a try.

I use Zonealarm for example.
