Cutting a piece from a dvd movie.

I'm curious, what kind of software would I need if I wanted to cut a clip from a dvd movie and keep it on my HD? Also, along the same lines, how can I create a still image from a DVD movie? I am pretty computer literate, to an extent, but when it comes to multimedia, I am lost.

The way i'd do it would be to convert the dvd into an avi file on ur hdd with whatever program (search for easydivx) and then use virtual dub to cut the piece you want.
