CD-RW Incompatiblity

My PC has a TEAC CD writer 48x/16x/48x

I recently bought some CD-RW 24x disks which proved to be completely incompatible with my Win XP Pentium 4 PC

Following the retailer's recommendation I exchanged them for 12x disks from the same brand name and they work perfectly

I should very much to know for the future what is the reason for the incompatibilty

CD's are (almost) alway's compatible with the CD-writer and NOT
with the OS or the whole PC... ;)
