View Full Version : Strange Mod or Laser Problem?

Hi guys,
A couple of nights ago, I installed a Duo 2 SE into a V5 PS2. Everything went OK, and all the wires were good when checked with my multimeter. So, I reassembled and everything worked perfectly - apart from PS2 and PS1 copied CDs. All originals worked fine as did copied DVD ROM and DVD-Video - only these two things were giving me trouble.

So I disassembled again, check all my points again, and found still nothing. So, after this, I checked again and bam - still nothing happening with those two.

So, I took the chip out and last night put it back in. All points metered out correctly again, and the same problem! http://www.fileforums.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

Again this morning, I disassembled again and nothing untoward is wrong with that install.

The other strange thing is, is that the copied PS2/PS1 CDs make exactly the same noises as originals, and spin up exactly the same, even go black before the PlayStation2 or PS logo, but then it just stops for a few seconds, flashes up No Data and finally RSOD! http://www.fileforums.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

Now this bloody thing is doing my nut in, and I know I haven't done anything wrong judging by the way things function and sound and test out. So could it even not be the mod and it's the laser struggling for data once the disc has booted?

In the meantime, I'm going to ask my mate to see if I can borrow his 400R off him to try it.

Any help would be much appreciated and sorry for going on a bit. Thank you in advance...

A person a while back had the same problem with a Duo2se if i remember correctly. It acted like it was a media issue but in the end it was his laser. Spedmetal can explain this in better detail but If the laser doesnt read the data in a certain amount of time the chip will "timeout" and the console will give a RSOD. I know its not much but maybe thats what it happening.

Yeah, I remember that one - good point :)

I think you're right Warlock, because it goes to boot, and goes black - it all passes through OK,makes the right beeps and spins and then just quits, flashes 'No Data' and RSOD.

Anyway, i'll try my mates laser over the weekend and see what happens :)

It'll boot the PS1 / PS2 Original CD fine - but it does tend to hang for a few seconds and go - which makes me think laser... But we'll see I suppose when I borrow my mates 400R.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway :)

Hmm - I've had a bit of a fiddle and I've gotten PS1 backups to boot intermittently. I think it's definately a laser problem :)

I swapped out my mates laser and put it in mine. I set the drive up identically as it had been in his. Now, on his station, it works perfectly, but on mine, now CDs just click, click, click etc... and do nothing. But, on his, things work great. I tried a bit of calibrating just incase and nothing gives? DVD's work great still though.

So, does anyone have any ideas now as to whether it's laser or chip?

Thanks...

OK,
after a little more tinkering with a new laser, things are reading fine again. However, the old PS2 CD problem still exists. If I boot the PS2 to browser, and put a PS2 CD Backup in, the disc spins up, and validates as a PS2 CD - and the blue disc appears. When I press X, it goes to boot, goes black, stops and goes to RSOD.

I think it could be a mod problem... What do you guys think? I know you're probab;y sick of me whinging on, but I need to get this sorted. Thanks a lot for any input...

OK it's sorted - I just changed the sled angle of the laser and bam! Everything boots perfectly. :)

I was just about to reply that is was the exact thing that mine was doing after my Crystal install until I sent it out to Spedmetal and it came back with a new laser in it. :)

Works fine now.
