Mod Chip stores

Are there any stores in the southern california area. If so, where are they located, and what chip would you recommend ( for someone who has never soderd anything ). Also, should i buy a harddrive or a dvd+rw and why?(maybe both). :confused:

I wouldn't attempt a mod if you've never soldered before.. Ps2s can be tricky business.
