Which modchips are compatible with dual layer disks?

I understand that on dual layer PS2 games the second layer is PTP, which dvd writers at the moment can not burn, meaning a specific chip, like the DMS4 with toxic 0.3 bios, is necessary.
I also understand that some old PS2s have problems with this - many people have reported problems with GT4, many copies have been returned to games shops by people who say their PS2 won't play it, most of them have had old consoles.

Yet shouldn't all PS2s be able to read burned DVD9s (as long as they're working properly)? they all play movies, which are on dual layer disks, so if you copied a movie onto a burned DVD9, a PS2 should be able to run the movie right? What is the difference between a DVD9 movie and DVD9 game?

If not... then which chips are compatible with burned DVD9 games?
I've got one PS2 with a Magic 3.1, and one with a DMS3. They both play GT4 with no problem, but i'm going to try a backup of it on DL media in a few days. What are the chances that the Magic 3.1 PS2 will run the backup?

to put it simply your chances are zero, you can however back it up to HD, and this would work even without a mod chip.

the same guy that made the tool to run on hd is due to release a dvd9 dl version very soon

explain to me why my chances are zero?
do neither the DMS3 nor Magic 3.1 play burned DL disks at all?

bear in mind - i am aware that at the moment GT4 can be backed up on hard drive, or on DL disk with a DMS4 or Matrix Infinity with the correct firmwares, but not just simply on a DL disk for any chip. i'm talking about when a patched DL version is available, will either of those chips play it?

(and in fact i have had a few conversations with toolboy, who made the patches, to help him towards getting this DL patch made, i have burned a few test copies at his request to give him results and i'm also responsible for some testing on the PAL version, he's getting some DL disks himself in a couple of days then hopefully his work will be faster. plus some people are working on a DVD5 rip based on his initial patches)

It's got nothing to do with the chip, it doesn't read the discs, that's the job of your laser and how good it is. Any modchip will allow the PS2 to read anything, as long as your PS2 can understand it. Basically all a modchip does is allow you to play any PS2 code while bypassing any protection. Any PS2 with a good laser can read DVD+R DL media, it's how the data is pressed onto the disc that matters.

Movies are no problem, but games like GT4 either have to be patched or like you said, have the right firmware on the chip.

I dont think its the laser, Its the media itself. Until we get some DL media capable of PTP writing its not going to work. There are a few burners out there capable of writing PTP but all media it OTP so where screwed ATM.

Matrix Infinity and DMS4 are both combatable with dual layer and the Crystal chip will be soon as well. Any chipped or non-chipped PS2 can boot GT4 from HDD with the proper patches.

Both MI and DMS4 will work with DL disk, but you need to flash to the newest firmware.

Most chips now, will work with DL media because of the Toxic DL patcher.
