Well, reading the thread about the Pioneer
got me off on a tangent.................
take this for what it's worth
(simply one man's opinion/ actually three; I know at least two people who would agree with me)

We all read Tom's or Sharky's etc
and get these great unbiased reviews of equipment

but never hear much about how it works in the long run................

I have been building clones for years
I have had such significant reliability problems with Pioneer/ ASUS ROM's or Burners that I will not use them

I absolutely won't buy one..............
(self-admittedly, it's been three years or so since I did, so maybe things have changed)

Every single one I ever purchased self-destructed
maybe two weeks
maybe six months
a year or so normally

I do have someone with a ASUS CD burner that is on year three (plus) and still working
but for the most part............................

For what it's worth
I buy Plextor's, Sony's or Lite-ons (same as Sony)

They are bullet-proof

ya Plextor's are more expensive
but not like they used to be
they are close to being "in-line" to everyone else
and you can certainly find a Sony or Lite-on at a competetive price

Plextor is what I personally use for my "key" Burner
but generally use a Lite-on for the second one and or my ROM's
(same as a Sony minus Sony's BS)

Opinions ????????

What do you think ??????????

(oddly enough I have discovered that I have been wrong BEFORE/ perhaps Pioneer and I just have Bad Karma)

This is, of course, just my opinion from my own experience, but I will never again buy any drive from I/O magic. It went completely kaput after about 2 months. Drive couldn't even be opened. I now own a Sony, and though I can't say I'm completely satisfied with it, it's much better than the I/O Magic. I have a Sony DRU-530a and for whatever reason it will not burn at 8x, every movie I have backed up at this speed plays fine for about the first half and then just skips and jerks.
