I asked my friend in US buy me an HL2, reason is it costs less than bought it in Taiwan.
He emailed me the CD-Key, i gave him the disk.
But there is a huge problem comin'.....Steam ask me to insert my HL2 disk in my disk drive (display as below), I don't have it, but I bought it!

Could I just register my HL2 CD-Key without an original retailed HL2 disk?
Is Mini-Image work? Steam didn't tell me that I have to use my disk to register my Key, or I just buy it in Taiwan....

With the key you can create an account on steam and download the game. But if you have a 56 k modem, you shouldn't. :D

is there any mini image i can use to verify my HL2 cd-key? 'cause i don't want my friend send me the disk , that costs a lot :(
u dont get it... the disk is required for the files on the disk not as a disk check, so mini image is no use, you can either make an account on steam with ur legit cdkey and download HL2 from steam, or get your disk.

could somebody help? please?
When i remember right, there are differences between CD-Keys for the retail version an CD-Keys for the steam-version.
It seems STEAM knows that your key is for the retail version and therefore it ask for the CD/DVD.
GLH is correct, so there is no other way than to ask your friend to send you the CD by mail

Just make him activate the game with your account details and you'll be able to play the game.
After he does that, log on with your account details and there shall be no need for activation (I did that after formatting the HDD.)
Make sure that you both DO NOT log on at the same time at Steam, or you'll be both banned, along with the legit CD-Key.

Well the problem is, when his buddy has activated HL2 and logged out, can he download the needed files from steam to play? Or must he first install from the cd and can then play?

a bit of jet-lag this time, my friend will activate HL2 for me tomorrow :)
I'm afraid of the problem that Mr.munsterbuster have said as above.
sure my friend can activate HL2 for me, but don't know if I can play with my computer.
if I bought a HL2 retail version, will it be playable only with disk inserted? or I could D/L it via internet?
